SE cuts income by more than 90%

Don't know if anyone saw this but just in case:

ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1140485p1.html

My personal favorite line "With weak sales performance of console game titles that were newly released during the current fiscal year, as well as harsh market feedback regarding a key title".

I LOL'd.  It's the market's fault and not the companies.

Of course it's the player's fault.  They didn't like the game.  Shame on those players!

? Alright, I went to the link, where did the 90% cut figure come from?

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

The company expects sales of 130 billion yen, down from the originally announced 160 billion yen target. Net income was originally announced as 12 million yen, but this has been slashed to one billion yen.

First 160 billion minus 130 billion is 30 billion.  12 million I think is a typo and should read 12 billion. So that is a difference of 11 billion in net income again the math seems wrong if it is 12 million and not billion.

Well, wait a minute, is it wrong?

Was there not harsh market feed back?  Harsh means severe. And the feedback certainly seemed severe.

It has nothing to do with where people think they are placing blame.

You could also read it as "intense".

And how can this be possible?

originally announced as 12 million yen, but this has been slashed to one billion yen.

From what I understand, sales do not correlate to income.  If I read and fully understand it, they expected a 12 Billion income and slashed it down to 1 Billion.  That's actually OVER 90% drop in earnings.

Ah ok, I already thought that sentence in the article was strange. Thanks.

I have been following Square for many years, and i saw some bad direction come about 4-5 years  ago. They wanted to open up outside the JPN market and into NA,so they started to make some NA games, the problem they don't understand is SE is almsot invisible over here, nobody follows their games.I truly feel Square does NOT understand the NA market at all, they live too much in their shell over their ,always talking to JPN gaming magazines and sites, while over here sites have to translate transcripts from JPN sites.

Not many realize just how big Sqaure Enix is,they all think Blizzard is some giant or SOE,well Sqaure is bigger, they actually have released and are working on tons of games, not including all their mobile and handheld stuff.

I think some people got greedy and wanted to get too big too fast, the gaming industry was booming, but now there is no growth and far too many games.Square Enix shoudl have stayed smaller and stick to 1 maybe 2 big name games ,instead the yhave spent incredibly high amounts ,including foolishly outbidding everyone to get Tomb Raider.I doubt they will ever make much from that initial investment.

Square Enix is known for FF of course, then dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts, that should have remained their main focus, this way less overhead, more effort towards fewer titles. Those 3 franchises has made them sooooooooooooo much money, they got careless with spending, now all these other losing titles will gouge into their profits.

Bottom line is i do not see Square Enix turning it around for a few more years at least, they have dug themselves a big hole. However, they fell into that hole before and became MUCH bigger than Blizzard,so i would never give up on them.

    Proper article.

    Square Enix

I know sounds like a conspiracy theory ,but i smell soemthing there with the dates.

Their fiscal year ends MAr31,so happens this is the date they picked for PS3 and probably when the FFXIV goes live ..again.I smell a developer trying to weasel out of bonuses and such by eliminating profits from their fiscal tenre.Tehy have also moved new people into place that won't get their bonuses until next year,so all seems like a tidy house cleaning.money saving operation to me.

Tryying to follow the corrupt game known as the stock market and how books are manipulated is never ending, hard for the federal agents and courts to even prove wrong doings, although Lord British survived his lawsuit.

It seems they got hit a little over a 10% drop in one day. The main slump came from FFXIV being delayed on the PS3, not so sure if that other game listed on Bloomberg made any difference, never heard of it. I’m worried if Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be added to that list of delayed games. I think the Versus game started development since 2003 and they don’t want to commit to a 2011 release as of yet. Graphical changes can be seen here

    and here

while the actual slump when the 10% drop occurred can be seen here

The 12 million comes from $12 million US dollars conversion of the revised 1 billion yen of the projected profit.

Its 12 billion yen down to 1 billion yen and $142 million down to $12 million.

Yeah, I think you are reading too much into it.  The PSIII date was established long before they knew how poorly they'd do during the fiscal year.  Yeah, it's easy to manipulate revenue perhaps, but I've never seen a company manipulate revenue down ... especially down 90%!!!  That would be virtually impossible pull off - Bernie Madoff didn't even get a 90% manipulation!   Besides, the CEO's bonus is also tied to performance, so I'd imagine he'd rather see the numbers go up.

They are cleaning house all right ... but not because they don't want to pay bonuses.

...and getting it on top of the next paycheck. Common mistake, can happen to everyone.

The games did not get trashed. Just delayed past march when the financial year ends. So all of it will be in next years financial report.
