Hello all.
Thinking of coming back but a have a question.I left before it went F2P and was in Moria at that time. I have both the Xpacs.
The question I have is how much did F2P effect the higher levels. IMO F2P game bring in a different type of crowd. People who really dont have the seriousness and just want to play it because its free. LOTRO is a game were being involved is a must. I am sure some people will disagree with me and really thats what I want to hear. I want to hear that nothing has changed and its still a great game.

I don't think going f2p has ruined the community. There will always be idiots in these games but I've also noticed a lot of nice new players who were playing just because it was free to play.

Also a lot of those F2p players are former subscribers (like me) that just don't play enough to run a monthly sub.
More importantly, if you're questing in Moria anyone (well 99.99999%) are going to be paying players. The only totally free zones are EL, Shire, Bree and now LL. All the rest have to be 'bought / unlocked' one way or another.
Things have changed most for the better, some not. As far as the idiots, I kept GLFF off when it was a sub only game so they'll always be those that don't take the game serious (to your degree).
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
Yup. All you ever had to do was look at GLFF to know that this game was always full of idiots.
If anything, F2P has improved things. Not as much as I hoped, but still better than it was.

Thanks for quick replies. I think i'll resub for a month and play it by ear. I really enjoyed LOTRO. The game has a real relaxed rp story line feel to it. IMO its one of the only games out there where the Adventure is half the fun and not like some where it is one big race to top level.
If I were you, I wouldn't resub.
I would download the game, play for free and if it feels right "then" resub.

You cant get into moria though correct? Cause thats where I left off.
If you have bought Moria, you will have all the Moria content unlocked. Same for Mirkwood.
You can go anywhere now. Just if you don't have the questpack/expansion then you won't be able to get any of the quests in that area.
I'm pretty sure what Sovrath meant was; Just DL the game and log in using your old account name and password, you'll find your Moria toon still there waiting for you. Since you bought MoM expansion back whenever, you'll have access to all the quests etc.... in that zone for your high lvl toon or even for any new one's you make.
As a non-subing player you won't be free, since you used to pay, you'll be a premium player with some better perks so there's no reason to start up a whole new account.

Indeed, contrary to the doom and gloom predicted by many here and in LOTRO forums, the community has not changed. Many of the immature brats did not stay long, as their interest waned as soon as they found out that there is no PvP they can play with a F2P account, profanities were not tolerated, and you cannot play "evil" races.
Those who stick around have been those interested in the lore and many subbed or become Premium after having played first as F2P.
I just reactivated my account today. Amazingly, spot a few guys on my friend list. Otherwise, the world is deserted except for the Solo camp. There are many zones need to pay for the adventure, I run from Bree to Esteldin then Trollshaw then Eregion then Moria, I didnt see one player during the road, Finally, I seen 3-4 people in the Dolven camp,
You can see many people run around in the Bree town but compare with the glorious time of Lotro in the past, the number of people today really less than a guild's members. And they must have difficulty to do Books and many quests. In that case, their performance will be minimum since they dont have skill books, traits, deeds ....etc. I guess what F2P can do is just XPing but level isn't everything if you dont have important traits, class skills etc.
The world is huge, low level start blind invite for group, but in the end, they wouldnt be able to play with you in certain contents.
I am playing DDO at the moment, but Lotro definitely is another valuable F2P if your sick of Korean and Chinese type of F2P. It's still a good game to killing time.
Bear in mind that with a new Expac in DDO, and Cata in WoW, it is not surprising that the population is not at its best these days, even though at least in Arkenstone it is still quite decent.
Sovrath's advice is excellent. You will still be able to play your old account for free, though there will be a few restrictions. You will have to pick which three of your characters you want to be able to use under FTP. As you complete quests and deeds you will aquire turbine points that you can use to unlock further character slots. Since you already have Moria and Myrkwood you really should be good to go.
I was going to just resub before they made all zones available for FTP, but luckily I decided to try FTP first. Turned out that was all I really needed. I'm still too burnt out on the game to play it more that once or twice a week, and since there was such a long dry spell of new content while they were working on the FTP revamp, there isn't really anything new in game now for me to get hooked on. I'm sure in time that will change and I'll play the game more. However I'm honestly not sure I can ever be persuaded to actually pay to play this title again (with the exception of buying a new expansion of course, though with a little effort you can even drum up enough turbine points through FTP for even an entire expansion.)
Side note, not really directed at the OPs questions just the LOTRO player base in general, and sorry it is a bit doom and gloom, it is true the dreaded flood of internet rejects did not happen to the game, or at least didn't last very long. However I'm actually not sure this is a good thing. The two main things I personally was worried about were the inundation of Chuck Norris and racial slur spouting morons, and the flood of MMO tourists who wouldn't enjoy the game concept and spend there entire day crying about it, just like we saw during beta.
It looks though as another poster pointed out that these people just gave up and went home. LOTRO is very much a niche game, mainly due to the harsh, though needed, restrictions of the holders of the IP license. So that means those of us who liked the game were either already playing it, or dormant while waiting for Turbine to finally add some new content.
So now the game is FTP, and FTP accounts get access to a quite decent amount of the game world. And those of us old players can still enjoy playing some of our old characters for free with out having to start the game all over again. This should be a dream come true, but I feel it isn't. Not only does it seem the expected influx of new blood (and money) isn't happening, or at least not in any great numbers. It now looks as if many of us long term PTPers are sticking with Free to Play. Can this really be a good thing for the future of LOTRO?
Did the game going FTP bring in enough new players who are actually willing to spend real money? Is the money they will get from people for small bibs and bobs from the LOTRO Store (none of which are necessary to purchase with real money, as you can get the same stuff with just a little grind) enough to keep this game afloat?
Just my two cents and just curious to see what my fellow LOTRO vets think.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
Ok so since I got everyone's attention.
If I sub like I did before will I get everything I should get or did the F2P change things around? Anothers words I just want to play the game that I always played. I could care less about money.
If money is not an issue, sub as before and enjoy the game. you'll get also 500 TP that you can eventually save for buying stuff in LOTRO store or save for future Expac.
Cheers
Well, I recommend a subscription as you essentially get the same game as you had before plus monthly points to use if you are so inclined.
Otherwise you get the entire game.

Actually there have been changes. Updated bank vault, still its not fun to use but an improvment of what rolled out with f2p. Lorremaster and RK got some updates here a week or so back. My RK was traited lighting now traited fire due to the nerfs.
Changes that are comming in about 4-6 months they are going to remove radiance, this is what I am waiting for.
Other changes were the clasic instances are not like skimishes you go to them via the join pannel no more ruing up to places like cd and all.
Is the game better or worse, I cant say. If your coming back hoping things are better you might be in for a shock, just depends on what drove you off in the first place.
Unlike what I seen other folks say glff on brandywine is still as bad or maybee even worse than what it was, different names same pie holes.
Thanks guys. Helps a lot.
I was reading a bit yesterday and noticed that you spend these new points on recipies, but can you still buy them with in game currency or are they only bought with TP now?
I left before because of a couple reasons. One was that I was slowely getting burnt out from playing mmo's 10 hours a day. Two I got married and was spending a lot of doing that (or well i needed to spend the time lol). three (ok theres more then a couple) I wanted to wait to see how much F2P effected the game.
So now im looking back into that its winter and I got more time. Also im married now so I officially have no life until we have a baby.
Or... You'll be playing with the little one sleeping on your lap, like I did.
My bf and I also resub'd to LotRO last week after about a year away from it. From what we have seen, the changes have had more positive effects than negative. I read some poster earlier in this thread that said the world was dead, well, not the case on our server. (Melendor) In fact, one of the reasons we left was because after doing all the questing, deeds, what-have-you, the only fun stuff to do was the instances. But, unless you were in a raid oriented kin, it was not possible to get radiance gear.
While we were in a small kin, we managed the 6 man's to get our first sets of radiance last year, but after that we could do no more. We reached out to others to try and merge our kinship with another so we could do the end game content, but there was nobody ever around, much less a willing group. When Mirkwood came out, everyone was gone. Moria was a ghost town. We still needed/wanted to do 12 man instances in Moria, but everyone had moved on to Mirkwood. We all just said screw it. Game over...
Now, in this last week we've been playing again, there's people everywhere. Moria is once again like it used to be, with 50 people standing around in 21st at any given time, running around in circles, dueling, and spamming PUG's. Now with F2P implemented, all the older areas are full of people again. You don't feel like you're the only person playing this game if you have to go to Bree. Nor have I seen any level of change in the maturity of the community. Most people playing LotRO that I have had experiences with, have been cool, fun, mature people. That is still the case.
Now, if we could only get our sorry, +40 radiance asses into a real kin so we could gear up, then we'd be really happy!!
The game is great. The way they shove the store in your face is not so much.
If you have more money than time you will love the game.
If you like paying you old standard $15 a month and everybody being on the same level playing field, you might not like it.
Sadly, I came back because of Free to Play but I will probably leave because of it.
Welcome to the Online Middle Earth Shopping Mall!!
Indeed! If you pay your old standard subscription fee nowadays, you'll be called a VIP, get some of those silly points each month you could use as you like and you can just play like you did before F2P.
