I am looking for an mmo

Hello all,

Currently I am unemployed and I have lots of free time in my hands. I want to try this thing you guys call "mmorpg". I played an rpg back when I was in high school with friends. I played Vampire: The Masquerade for two years so I am familiar with rpg elements. After a quick search on the internet I came across with Uncharted Waters Online and played it for two days. I guess it is not my thing. After this I searched a bit more and I found out that there are too many mmorpgs out there. Tons of mmorpgs... I am kinda lost. Is there an mmorpg which I can role-play/story tell with people, design my own character with choices I make and own stuff inside a game? I guess I am interested in sandbox too.

P.S. No I won't play EVE Online because I deteste everything with sci-fi theme.

P.S. 2 If I sound weird somehow about mmorpg elements please consider that I am new in this thing.

Thanks in advance.

New in the mmorpg block.

You can try Darkfall or Mortal Online, both of which I wouldn't really recommend to someone new mmo's just because there is little to no guidance at all so it may be hard to get started.

I honestly I would say try some of paid to play that went free to play.  Like WAR, DDO, or Everquest.

first game popped up for you was uncharted water, really weird choise hehe but i suggest to jump in lord of the rings online, heavy story and overall good packed.

Most MMOs have free trials. Most but not all also have monthly fees of 15 bucks a month. As a Vampire fan, keep you eyes out for CCP/White wolfs "World of darkness online", it been a few years in the making and should come out in a year or 2.

Vanguard: VG is kinda a mix between a themepark and a sandbox game. You can build your own house or boat in it. Sandbox games can be tough on new players so trying this might help a bit. Not so big population wise but neither are any sandbox besides Eve.

DDO: DDO is more or less regular D&D and if you like D&D you should really try it (it is also free but they sell stuff to get in money). This game is most fun if you start out with some friends.

Guildwars: Kinda a mix between Diablo and a RPG game made by several of the people behind Diablo. No monthly fees but you'll need a box to play it. A lot of fun but somewhat old now.

I would recomend Dungeon Fighter Online. Took me some time to get around and download it, but when I did it brought be back to the days of old. Such a good game for free with micro transactions of course.

    Hello again,

Thanks for your suggestions NetSage, m0lly, Loke666, vistage and SaddyP. I did some research about the games you wrote here. I decided to play Lord of the Rings Online. It doesn't suits me well in terms of flexibility but I know Tolkien books very well. I am going to take a look at this game. Thanks for the heads up about Vampire MMORPG too. I look forward to hear about it.

If anyone else has an opinion about an mmorpg which gives players freedom and chances to create, feel free to post a message here.

    Have fun all!

Play WoW.  it's the most polished and accessible MMORPG out there.  After you get comfortable with WoW, you may wish to take a look at some other games like WAR, Aion, EQ2, and LotRO, but you'll have to be willing to look past some bugs and questionable design decisions that hold them back from being comparable to the industry leader.

EDIT: Or just go ahead and play LotRO.
