Please sell me on WoW.

Okay, so I'm an old SWG player and I'm trying to figure out what MMORPG is going to take its place. I've been playing Guild Wars, and while fun, it isn't a MMORPG. And it is too linear. I am also playing Dark Age of Camelot, and the grind is very, very painful -although it does look promising. All the players there are very, very pessimistic about the game. I'm also trying the Saga of Ryzom, and I can't figure out if this game is good or not.

Here's what I am looking for, so please tell me if WoW will offer this:

(1) I am not very much into magic, so if I play fantasy games the I like to place the bulk of my skills into melee and ranged combat. In Guild Wars I am a Ranger / Warrior and I hold my own well against mages of all types. So I would like to be a character with minimal-to-no magic abilities, but still be formadible.

(2) I want a game with player housing.

(3) I want a game with non-combat professions and activities. I don't mind some grinding, but I want other things to do.

(4) I want a game with interactive cities where I can walk in buildings, etc.

(5) I like games with player cities, but this is not a requirement.

(6) I want a crafting system.

(7) I want a player-driven economy. If I build something I want to be able to sell it at a marketplace to other characters.

(8) I want a game where I can function well going solo; I don't want to have a group for everything.

(9) I want mounts.

So please let me know if WoW is the game for me, based on the above criteria. Thanks, and I look forward to your responses!

WoW offers you 2 classes that makes no use of magic and many that has just a limited use (Hunter uses mana, but all his abilities are shots and traps.. not really magic.. ok they can soothe beasts.. big deal). Both the classes can surely heald their own against mages of any kind. Class balance is quite good and each class is interesting to play, magic or not.
    (2) I want a game with player housing.
Wow has no player housing whatsoever nor they plan to add one in the future.
    (3) I want a game with non-combat professions and activities. I don't mind some grinding, but I want other things to do.
WoW is full of non-combat things to do. from fishing to cooking to mining/skinning whatever to actual crafting to playing economist in the Auction house and so on.
    (4) I want a game with interactive cities where I can walk in buildings, etc.
Practically 100% of WoW buildings can be visited.
    (5) I like games with player cities, but this is not a requirement.
As it has no Housing, it has also no player cities.
    (6) I want a crafting system.
WoW has a crafting system, but nowhere near as complex as SWG. it is quite simple in the essence, get the reagents, click button, got the item. the good of it is in the realization. Getting the reagents can be quite the quest in itself, especially for the advanced Blue magic items.
In addition all crafting professions give something useful from the get go. Be it bags, healing potions, armor kits or sharpening stones. Also is good the hunt for the recipes. there are many more recipes in the game than the ones you get from your trainers. the rest are scattered around the world, some in vendors and some on monsters. Some are quite rare.
Crafting will permit you to craft not only normal stuff, but also green and blue stuff (also purple but those recipes are really really rare and hard to make). as a clarification green stuff are classified as "uncommon" and represent normal magic items. Blue items are "rare" and are more powerful magic items. Purple are legendary items, THE most powerful items in the game.
Item you crafts are also unique. they won't be found around on monsters but are exclusive to crafters. Some of the high end recipes can be quite powerful, for example it was said the most powerful 2 handed axe is crafted.
    (7) I want a player-driven economy. If I build something I want to be able to sell it at a marketplace to other characters.
WoW has a hybrid economy. You can always sell stuff to vendors, but , especially for magic items, it is much better to go to the Auction House and sell it to other players.
    (8) I want a game where I can function well going solo; I don't want to have a group for everything.
WoW is very solo friendly. Most classes works well solo, some better than others, but in no cases you do not have the option to go around solo. The game world is also quite vast offering you always at least 3-4 areas where a character your level could  adventure. So you runned out of easy quests in Darkshore? Move to Loch Modan or Westfalls, or Lakeridge and do some of those areas quests.
    (9) I want mounts.
Wow has all sorts of mounts. problem is you need to be minimum level 40 to get them. now, level 40 is attainable in less than couple mounts of casual playing. the 90 gold required for it, however, is another story. better you start saving each single penny if you want one.... alternativly be a paladin or warlock and you can get your class specific mount for much less (about one third). It is rumored also the existance of rare mounts.
So please let me know if WoW is the game for me, based on the above criteria. Thanks, and I look forward to your responses!

I hope this helped you decide.

I would advice, even if some of the points do not match, that WoW is to be tried. It is a unique experience that any MMorpg player should count on his belt.

WoW is fun, but not the game you describe wanting to play.

I'd say EQ2 fits most of your wants.

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.

Ugh... but it is run by Sony... Grrrr....

Really, I'd say you described SWG...

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....

If player housing is an absolute then I'd suggest Daoc, but yet the grind is harsh, and without catacombs its like looking at eq2 through wax paper.

But if its not then i defintly suggest WoW

The one thing the probably ruined me on wow was its crafting system, I used to the guys who said

"Ok, im not a nerd as long as i dont craft anything." "OMG!!!!11EON MY ENGINEERING SKILL WENT FROM 155 TO 156 !!!1OMGWTFL33T2222:

The cities are one of my favorite parts about WoW, Stormwind is a bit of a diisapointment, but Ironforge and Orgimmar are awesome.

WoW has mounts, even epic ones and class specifc, every one can ride eveyr one elses though just takes longer.

I know how you feel about magic, and im sorry to say theirs only 3 non-magic related classes. Rogue, warrior, and hunter, You could argue paladin or shamin or even druid if you want you might actual likem.

There is no grinding, its all about the quests, there is always something that needs to be done, granted its ussualy killing but at least it has a purpose and ussualy a definte amount of loot

Side note: There will eventually be guild owned "houses" or something but sorry to say not in the forseeable future.

There is a very player driven economy just ask any one what the most popular place on the alliance is and they'll tell you...Ironfoge Ah.

Depending on your class soloing is easier than others obviously. But every one including...especially the priest. Did i mention the priest is the best 1v1?

Thanks for the info, gang. I actually bought WoW yesterday and played after work for a few hours. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, since I don't generally go for the fantasy type games. I was expecting immense lag and other problems, which I have read about, but it wasn't too bad. The only problem I had was that the game locked up on exit, but I hope that's just a fluke. Overall, it looks promising!

    Thanks again for the input!

I'm curious... what server and faction did you choose?

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....

IMO neither WoW nor EQ2 is geared towards you. You seem hell-bent on somewhere in between those two.

Wait for vanguard: saga of heroes, that seems more fit for someone of your critique perhaps...(Made by the people who made EQ1 before SoE mercilessly butchered it)

  • dtritusdtritus Member Posts: 139
Vanguard is likely not going to see retail for at least 2 more years...

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....

I think you might find Eve onlines open environment may be what your looking for. A place where players create much of the environment and storyline. Economy, politics, empire building, war, pirates, research & dev, production and sales/marketing are all there.

  • HyproHypro Member Posts: 2

Yes, EVE might offer you some of the stuff you wanted. It might seem overwhelming at first, and feel "lost in space" like i did at first. But its a well crafted game indeed and very .. can i say hardcore? Very free and open, and hard penalties in more ways then one if you get in trouble. Very cool ships i might add.

I quitted of boredom and slow progress, and the space feel very empty and to me slow and ackward controls. But it is not for everyone. Im currently in WoW.
    Love it.

    My info....

    Suramar : Alliance : Human : Warrior : Miner : PLAYERNAME: Glander

So far, I have enjoyed it. I'm actually in the process of starting my own guild, the Knights of Suramar. I'm looking to recruit older (21 yo +) players that enjoy cooperative gameplay. The goal is to foster mutual leveling of players and be an overall positive presence in the game.

That was funny... Almost all answers you got completly ignored the criteria you were asking for, and just started promoting their "own" favorite game, no matter how far from your wishes it was.

I am glad you decided not to listen to people and make up your own mind. You will never get an honest answer from anyone on MMORPG.com

That's not true at all... most of the answers people gave where to direct him toward a game that would fit most of his wants...   Honestly, did you even read that thread?

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.

game does lock up in exiting sometimes for me too....log out first then exit.  You dont have lag??  You must not have visited IF and the AH.  Just wait.
