    haha, no it's not illegal

    It is against most game's EULAs, however. So don't think you can brag about it while you're playing the real everquest (not that you would be if you're playing winter's roar) and get away with it, or post on game's forums either.  I know posts have been locked on vanguard.com regarding this issue because they want to honor sony's rules.  Emulated servers are only illegal if the administrator is making a profit from it.  Winter's Roar accepts donations, but only uses it for maintaining the server.

    why is Winter's Roar one of the few that still runs these days?

    are there any others out there?

    Because theyre the only ones who work at it and add content of their own instead of just replicating with Sony did?
