Generally speaking MMO's are not that good in the audio department. The music tends to be generic afterthought and spoken dialog is still nowhere near where it needs to be compared to the rest of the gaming industry.

edit, yeah AoC was pretty good also

I would agree that L2 has the best music all the way around. Not just the theme music which is great but every area in that game has music that just seems to 'fit'. It is one of only a few MMOs I've played that I actually preferred the in-game music to listening to my own music while I played. The music just adds so much to the immersion in that game.

Second place on my list would have to go to EQ1. The theme was great but the in-game music left a lot to be desired.

Heh, funny, I'd totally forgotten this thread image

I agree with L2, I never played Lineage 2 but I did collect the L2 soundtrack, just because it had some great musical themes in it.

Here's an example, great atmospheric songs that wouldn't be out of place in a Lord of the Rings movie: Lineage 2 musical themes

Also for nostalgic reasons here a tribute to the watercolory splendor that was GW's Pre-Searing Ascalon, the starting area of GW, on the hauntingly beautiful music of Jeremy Soule: Jeremy Soule's GW music

For me it is AoC and Guild Wars. Say what you want about AoC's gameplay but graphically and musically it is up there with the best.

EQ all the way, From the opening theme to KFC in South Karana. They nailed the music, each zone came alive with its individual theme. Btw the airy sound of KFC is why I named it, it is my favorite of any mmo.

This, AoC had great visual's and Music. Some of the best music out there imo. It is also a good game. but has its flaws.

WoW also had some great music imo.

Sure there is loads of other MMO's with great music but these 2 are the ones who stick out the most for me.

There is just so much great music in MMOs.. Its hard to say which one has the best. Guild Wars and Age of Conan soundtracks were just amazing. Tabula Rasa was incredible. Playing Aion right now and find it kind of annoying. Even though I cant really name a best because there is just so much good music.. I will say that the most memorable is definately the opening theme of EQ1...

I remember anxiously awaiting to log in for so many years listening to this song. Even today when I hear it on the likes of Youtube, I find myself filled with nostalgic Memories of the game. Even though it was posted above I will post it again here.

It may be simple but it surely is sweet.

EQ1 was a magical time for me,  the music didn't have much affect me at the time when i was playing it, but now that i listen to it, it does.  The music really reminds me of my first few days where everything was an adventure.  I didn't know what the heck i was doing and it didn't matter if i was doing things the right way or not.  At that point it was about discoveries and what the heck moments.  There were no guides, everyone i met was either relatively respectful or nice.  People actually grouped with each other.  I don't see much of that anymore, 6 people banning together to sit at a mob for a couple of hours to help someone else get their flowing black silk sash or the like.  If anything takes more then a few minutes they can't be bothered, unless it helps them.

So what i guess i'm saying is the EQ music reminds me of times when people actually went the extra mile to help each other

Of course as it's my first my fav is the everquest music.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

AOC has the best soundtrack to me.  Also LOTRO and SWG (Pre-NGE of course) have some amazing music as well.

I'd say AoC's music is the best, consistently.  Pretty much all of its music has alot of impact.

2nd best:  LotRO in certain areas.  Bombadils theme and Esteldin are some of my favorites.

Honorable mention to SWG, cuz I love the SW soundtrack.

Kelethin Music from EverQuest 1 is definitely comes as number 1 for me. Sometimes after I listen to it I sit in a dark corner crying all night pulling out what's left of my hair remembering the good times.

You can listen to all EverQuest Music (MP3) here http://www.mmotomb.com/music/everquest-music/

Second is Lineage 2 Opening and Closing themes.

Third is City of Heroes when you create your hero Music Theme.

When I was entering stoemwind / wow for the very first time, music I heard gave me some epic thrill, and I think it is the music that made that moment most rememberable in my MMO experience until today.

World of Warcraft has some really nice music. Perhaps the best part is that for some reason no matter how many alts you've leveled, the music never seems to get old.

Lord of the Ring's music seems to fit the game perfectly. This is especially noticable in the Shire, and Tom Bombadil's theme is one of my favorite of all time in an MMO.

Aion's music share's a combination of the traits mentioned above. What sets it above is that it has an unusual number of songs that fall into the 'fantastic' category. The original title screen theme was one of these, and there are several others that aren't found on the OST, yet are fantastic in their own right. A prime example of this is the music that plays in the item remodeling shop in Sanctum.

    I agree w/ Aion here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-jaOwPSef8&feature=related - best song from any MMO imho.
