Patch Notes - Version 1.33.03.16

2010-12-22

Notice: We can't stress this enough. When the launcher is running the patch installer, let it run

its course. It will take some time to apply the patch and it might seem like the installer is doing

nothing, but it is working. If you reboot or kill the patcher process you run the risk of corrupting

you installation, forcing you to do a full reinstall.

Notice of DirectX update:

Make sure you are running the latest version DirectX to avoid issues.

We are planning to go live with this patch tomorrow, so things could change on the note untill then.

We are also planning a small content patch shortly after this patch with some Christmas treats.

------ ADDITIONS AND CHANGES ------

General:

- Changed the color of chat-bubbles and added support for a different color when yelling.

- Compass should now correctly work when you are on a mount.

- Improved the sync between when your loading-screen gets closed and other players see you in

- Catalysts now have various strength-ratios.

- Overhead Swing, Spear Stance and Refining now being sold again.

AI & Mounts:

- Creature attack system improvement.

Fairly small patch, with some fixes in it.

I'm really interested in the Risar events that seem to be brewing.  Can't wait to see what happens next.

It sounds like there is some sort of holiday themed stuff going on at least around Fabernum.

there is an EFFIN compass now?!!!!!!

WTF?!.....what the hell is happening to this game?!!!

LOL, yeah there's a compass.  A lot of people had that reaction.  :)

For now, it's free (just push "C").  Supposedly, it'll be changed later to require a crafted compass to perform the function.  We'll see about that, I guess.  Still, I think they are trying to improve the new player experience, so added it now.

I agree, though - it's nice they are starting to patch regularly again.

What is happening is that Devs learn how to design a user friendly game. There is little of hardcore when you are new and dont know where to go to meet up with couple of friends.

Yeah... adding a compass was a step in the right direction.  Now they just need a basic (local)  in-game map... for the same reason.  Obviously if your character is 20 years old he would know what lies 5 minutes outside town.

it's not like there are no map of this game anywere.....takes 2 seconds to google a MO map. in game i'm all for compass as long as it's player made. maps could be cool but they should also be player made and they should be hand written just like if you were using Paint to draw.

That is just poor design by using excuse "it's on the net". A good game should supply everything player needs, without forcing him to use other resources, then the design failed. Same goes for IRCs trade channel tbh.

Nevertheless, a map (AI one for example) is little help to a new player since he still will have troubles finding where he is whole time.

Unless its intended by design. And because one game does not have X it does not mean its poor design, here its just different design. Also, its not like devs gave us the map anyway. Every single MO map is player made except weather map. IRC trade channel have to do with low, but recently increasing(30-40 people at Fab alone today) population. Game will draw more players and irc channel will not be needed for obvious reasons.

Sure, player made map is useful for newbies, but world is not incredibely huge and after being lost for first couple of days they will start finding their way-just as everyone of us back in beta did, I still remember being lost with a friend for 3 hours-tbh that was amazing 3 hours as we never were lost in a game-it felt great.

Here is the basic problem with your argument...

It boils down to you saying (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) that there is no in game map because by design it is meant to be created with the cartography skill.

Great... but there IS no cartography skill.. after 6+ months of release.  I understand the idea.. and once again it sounds great on paper... but since there is no cartography skill in game.. it would certainly help a newb to have access to the map... just like the compass.

Otherwise.. if you wait for the skill to be implemented.. it won't be needed because either no one will be playing OR 99.9% of the players will not need a map any longer because as you say the "world is not incredibly used and after being lost for first couple of days" they won't need the map...

This is the EXACT same situation as the compass.  SV realized that until they could actually get some in game skill to craft the compass it was better to just give one in the UI.  The same will happen with a basic map.

IRC channel will always be needed and used, since none bothers with the "hardcore" and user unfriendly design where crafters cant sell anything due to complete lack of any kind of shops, auction house or local trade chat. So your argument about IRC being popular having to do with low population is moot and irrelevant. Instant communication will always be used if the game doesnt have support for it.

As for the map, Devs did basically hand it to the players by releasing weather map, since that is what AI based theirs on.

Well, you are wrong on this one. Area down to fabernum is crowded with player houses with player vendors. You can buy there everytning(rare mounts, nomral mounts, bows, weapons, metals rare reagents, rare animal materials) but armor, which you can buy at every city you can start in if you don't want to wait for armor crafter, sure its way worse, but its still armor and it still protects.

And you clearly didn't get my point. Given enough population in game every city will be crowded enough to let crafters lead a good life. Also some form of local auction house is not out of question either(but you don't play, don't care and obviously, don't know this) and we might see something in that direction.

Believe me or not, MO is a game developed one could say with players themselves helping as many suggestions and feedback ideas were already used and SV still listens to community to improve the game while at the same time sticking to theirs main ideas and direction.

And about the map, sure in-game cartography didn't make it in time, but in case someone does not know it(which is not something uncommon here) it was meant to provide a map of some part of the map only(for example Talus Mountains or Tindremic Steppe map only, so you'd need few maps for all continent) and the final goal was to introduce maps made by players-I guess that was achieved by other means by players as we do have player crafted map for our use. Also, as I said, Myrland is small enlough that after 2 weeks of exploring you know it inside out so lack of map is nothing you should be whining about as its a design decision and a feature(you can be lost in game as I said which gives great feeling) and if you do not like feature list of X game why the F are you insisting on changing it to your personal likings instead of finding a game that will cater to your taste(which is 90% of themeparks).

No offense, but running around looting bags for items is something people do in WoW, I expected more from MO..

Something so predictable can't be taken as an offense.

Strangely enough, given the posts in the quoted thread, it appears actual players are enjoying this small holiday wrinkle in the game.

Well, considering the lack of events (except for the risar camp invasion and that bird flying.. two small events under half a year..) and celebrations in MO, I am not surprised people are enjoying even the small things they can get. I named low standards before, and I do so again.

Then again, I guess it is better then nothing, a logic majority of the fanbase seems to agree with.
