Do you also play the same singleplayer game for years while ignoring all new games, or eat the same food week after week, or watch the same tv show over and over again?
Some people just aren't stuck in a rut, ruminating the same game as - no offense meant - you see dogs sometimes chew the same bone indefinitely. Some people are openminded towards new things, also when it comes to MMORPG's, and those new things don't have to be totally, radically new and different from everything they've known before.
Your new jacket or shoes also don't have to be radically different from the ones you wore before.
But if it isn't radically different and the old one still works fine, why buy it again?
I played the beta, it was fun but like other said it's too much of the standard an MMO for me to worked up about it. Maybe after they put more details about pvp or raids I might think about buying it.
Like I said, when you buy a new car or a new coat, is it radically different from the one you had before? Do you also only play one shooter or action adventure game or RTS for years after years, never playing other games? Or stick with only watching one tv channel or one tv show?
Then why would you want to play only one MMORPG for years, while stating that some of those MMO mechanics bore you, never adding some more variety in your MMO gaming or switching to a new MMO game? Isn't that the pinnacle of boredom and addiction, having grown tired of something but not the drive to try something really new or even just different?
(and yes, that was partially rhetorical, because I know there are quite some people who are bored with their life or their study or job but who don't have the drive or initiative to make changes and thus keep stuck in a rut year after year, only complaining but not really changing or doing something about it)
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Dislike after beta. It's heavily based on WoW, but just less good. You're going to pay P2P + new game for content that is a fraction of that which WoW has to offer. Why would you do that..
Yes, a fresh fantasy game with different lore, much more classes/flexibiltiy, much better graphics, dynamic content, polish........yeah i'd ply it over WoW any day.
Better graphics? higher polygon count, but a lot of the areas seen thus far in beta are relatively bland.
I think there is room for improvement though.Personally I think the animations, especially in combat could use a little more "umph".Most of the 2h sword animations on most races/genders are just BLEH,except maybe the human races which are passable.
Magic could use a little "umph" too, though I dont know what it looks like in later levels. It all looks the same to me throughout all the classes, just different colors.
none of its drawbacks are game breakers for me though.

You didn't actually read the OP in that thread did you...
I put dislike, it's just not for me. A game has to have some kind of meaning, or at least distract me visually to play. I thought Aion was pretty for the first 30 levels. Rift hasn't hooked me with its generic themes, the explosive massive text while fun just tells me which demographic the game is aimed at and the quest helper is just MMO for dummies, something they'd apparently scoffed at the idea of but have somehow now added it to the game.
So yes, I'll go back to WoW first if I need an MMO fix, where I have friends, guildies, 6 years of history and a whole lot more difficult content with storylines I can at least feel attached to.
I hope those who pick up Rift have a lot of fun because all negativity aside that's what a game should provide. Rift doesn't do that for me, so great it can do it for you

Edit:
I also think your forgetting how difficult WoW is. Or you havnt played in a wihle. I was leveling a new character before the last beta. I got 72 in 4 days and didnt die once. The quest helper in WoW is also just as effective...
Dislike after beta. It's heavily based on WoW, but just less good. You're going to pay P2P + new game for content that is a fraction of that which WoW has to offer. Why would you do that..
Why would you want to play the same fucking game that you've been playing for years, whether that be WoW or LotrO or whatever?
I think that's kind of a disingenuous question, considering MMORPGs are designed to be played for years. That's why they add new content, increase level caps, provide more things to do. It's why they release content updates and expansion packs, expanding the game world and extending the game for those playing it. Providing enough content to keep players entertained for months or even years, instead of being "done" in a few weeks or whatever is one of the more unique aspects of a MMO over single player games. MMOs never truly "end" until they're taken offline.
And in the context of the question asked... If you're already playing a MMO that has you engaged enough to keep you playing for years potentially... Why would you want to move to another MMO that's very similar if you're already invested in a game that provides the same overall gameplay, has more content and far more development time under its belt?
Do you also play the same singleplayer game for years while ignoring all new games, or eat the same food week after week, or watch the same tv show over and over again?
Again... dishonest question. Single player games aren't intended to be played continuously for years. You can certainly play through them multiple times, but they all end after 20, 30, 50 hours or whatever. TV show is a bad analogy as, again, assuming you're talking a show with episodes, they run 30-60 minutes and end. It's not one continuous episode that runs non-stop for years.
That said, there are people who do enjoy a show enough that they will follow it as long as it's on the air and even follow it in syndication.
Again... dishonest characterization.
There's nothing "closed minded" about wanting a game you can play and enjoy for a long time. Also, playing a MMO continuously for months or years doesn't preclude one from also trying out something new... so what you're implying there is a false dichotomy.
Your new jacket or shoes also don't have to be radically different from the ones you wore before.
.... and again... disingenuous analogy...
Kind of a surprisingly "off" post for you, Cyphers... They're typically better thought out than this.

I think you might be forgetting one of the fundamentals in an MMO - other people. The friends you make, the friends you drag along with you, guildies, people you dislike, the community. Those things can make you stick around long after you're bored brainless. The main reason I quit WoW was because the server community had become so poor, because friends had quit first, because the social side had become a pugable affair. Otherwise I'd probably be playing still and not looking for an MMO that would promote, not kill off, the MM part in MMO.

Kind of a surprisingly "off" post for you, Cyphers... They're typically better thought out than this.
Lol. I adjust to the general atmosphere and vibe in a topic debate, so I'm using very basic analogies in order to make my points come true
Besides, you sniped my analogies, but unjustly: with all analogies, there are some truths to be found in them and some borders beyond which the analogy doesn't fit the bill anymore. If I wish, I could prove with (almost) any analogy the exact opposite what the initial presenter of the analogy was trying to prove with it. They're just analogies, meant for clarification an aspect, never to be ultimate truths.
Regarding MMORPG's and other things we enjoy and like variation in, like entertainment media as tv, movies, books, singleplayer games - after all, MMORPG's are meant for enjoyment and entertainment:
- people vary a lot in life and in their entertainment, to keep things fresh and fun. However, they vary a lot less in MMORPG's than in their other forms of enjoyment and entertainment.
- 'MMORPG's are designed to be played for years' only tells something about the intention of its makers, you're not brainwashed, are you, that you believe you have to play an MMORPG for years just because its developers want you to? If an MMORPG should be played that long, it should provide you enough various content to keep you busy AND entertained for months after months, even for years.
- if MMO gamers really enjoy their MMO for years, more than any other form of entertainment, then good for them! However, a lot of MMO gamers that post here claim to be bored and dissatisfied with certain MMO features: they're not entertained anymore, they don't have that much fun in playing them. They claim that 'something new' will boost that fun again.
Yet a lot of them are not trying MMO's that are truly different or with different game mechanics than the one(s) they're playing, and they bash new MMO's for the very same features that they say bore them but are in the MMORPG they're playing right now. Now that's double standards.
Another MMORPG, any MMO so also the new ones, provides already more differences and 'freshness' than the MMORPG some people have been playing for years and still are playing.
If people really want something radically new and different, go play those very different MMORPG's, because they're already out there, don't ignore these. if you're bored with what you're playing , try something else, don't just keep on playing what you have been playing, after all, with other forms of entertainment you don't just stick to one thing either. And if you find certain gameplay features tedious and the same old, then take a good, long look at yourself and what you're playing now.
Because either you're just bashing other new games to make yourself feel good about the MMO you're playing, or because you're worried that the success of a new MMO will have a negative impact on the MMO you're playing, or you're deluding yourself and should break the monotony and rut by seeking out something else, something that has maybe nothing to do with MMO's but still can entertain you more.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I'm not sure yet. I want to see more: the PVP, higher level zones, dungeons and raids.
However, from my experience in Beta 1 and Beta 2 right now I can say I am underwhelmed. Kudos to Trion for the technical proficiency and lack of game-breaking bugs, but I feel they are failing in terms of creativity and innovation. The world doesn't feel alive to me.
I ilke what i saw in beta2 alot, but i will still wait and see and not buy it as soon as it hits the stores.
I think that Trion really did a respectable job with this game, but for my personal taste it is too straight forward quest-centric, "kill x of y", move on to the next hub etc. The game is pretty much lacking an own identity. Ok, the soul-system offers some new diversity, but i doubt that the game can hook me up long time just on fiddling with skill-templates alone.
While the game does what it does very well, what it does is not enough in general for me. I have played this game for years before under many different names, i know it's mechanics like the combat, char progression, crafting etc. in and out from other games. Too bad, but WoW, Lotro, WAR, Eq2 and the like got me burned out on what Rift is going to offer long ago. I have to say that all this excludes pvp which i haven't seen in Rift so far.
I think it rather caters to the gamers new to MMOs and not yet sick of the same-o-same mechanics for years -but these new gamers will probably run to Cataclysm in first place And to the veteran MMOers Rift just isn't enough new taste i'm afraid.
So, while Rift is a really good game, i'm not shure where it belongs on the market and to whom it's targeted at.
don't really understand the whole "generic" and similar comments. what can you really expect from mmorpgs? they're mainly the same, i wouldn't expect some kind of new technology that allows a COMPLETELY different game from things such as WoW, eq, etc. i thought the game was pretty fun, decent(not perfect) graphics, but srsly you shouldn't expect everything imo.
the rifts were really fun to take part in, which is like the main difference this game has over others.(other than ascended class system.. kinda)
dont see why people call the game "trash", etc.. maybe you should become a game designer and create yourself a utopia.
I'll prob wait for a trial, tired of getting burned on shitty mmo's by biting into hype, did it with WoW, then Aion, SWG and lots of others. One of the few MMOrpg's I didn't feel burned on was anarchy online, yeah the launch was bad, but I did enjoy the game even with the bugs. Since Rift sounds bascally like a typical classic mmorpg I can wait on it due to knowing it doesn't really have anything much new that any other mmo doesn't.
Bascally if your unsure just wait for a trial and see.

Probally still is a piece of total trash.. FF14 i mean. it was the typical squaresoft job to much focus on graphics not near enough anywhere else.

If your shoes costed $15 a month, would you buy the same shoe so you could pay $30 instead? Didn't think so.
Now take that first shoe... buy some new durable laces, some tough rubber soles, and a good foot padding. That's WoW with all the expansions... so why a buy a similar STOCK shoe when you've already invested so much into the first shoe?
I think the point most people are trying to make is that... minus rifts, the game falls short of bringing new light. One good mechanic doesn't save a game from a dozen bland ones.
Think carefully about how you play the game outside of rifts. The immersion into the game is too similar to other games on the market. That being said, the game will do good, but it isn't as good as I expected. And I expected far from perfect.
I've been ok with what I've seen in beta 1 and 2. It really isn't that different from other MMOs like WAR, WoW, EQ2, LoTR etc. I'm waiting to see what they do with their PvP and what higher end content is like. I'm hoping for some good conquest and epic instances/raids but not holding my breathe.
The main problem I have with it is that it is too similar to other MMOs that have come and gone and some still kicking around. Upcoming MMOs like SWTOR (Better story lines/interaction and hopefully non-standard classes compared to other MMOs), The Secret World (No levels, more open system for building a character and making them unique, great sounding story lines etc), Jump Gate Evolution (More action oriented then EVE allowing players to get into action faster and more of it). These upcoming MMOs will hopefully do well and add diversity to the MMORPG scene. Rift doesn't really do any of that. The only change it brings is the soul system. I hope GW2 doesn't suffer the same fate.
I really like it.. and I hope they do not change the GamePlay to much before release.. too many games change too much by the end of beta and stuff it all up (tabula rasa ).. thats what I am worried about..
But at the moment, yeah, the game is awesome... to me. .

Exactly. Its like an atomic unicorn, take off the hydrolic explosive combustable overdrive engine and you basicaly have the same atomic unicorn. Hahaha.
But seriously, enough with the metaphores, you had a very interesting point. $15 dollars a month you say? Ya see subscription MMOs arent just a product people, they become a service. If say World of Warcraft offers better service well you know wouldnt people go to the one with the best service which is entertainment. Census on these forums seems to be that Rift aint giving better service then ones already out hmmmm?
I didn't expect much, and I got a key from Fileplanet.
The reason I didn't expect much, is that I hadn't followed the game at all - and only heard some tidbits about it a few weeks ago.
I was pretty dismayed, because I found it shockingly familiar and almost like a carbon copy of WoW - in pretty much every way.
It's fine to use established working elements, but in terms of creative drive - I would expect some changes here and there, and something to make the game feel like something unique. The "soul" system isn't enough by a long shot.
Technically, it's decent and it looks good - but it's also slow and clunky.
The first several levels are EXACTLY like WoW, except more linear - and I've played enough of that already.
I didn't experience the Rifts - because I was bored out of my skull within an hour. I don't see how taking something from Warhammer and changing it a bit - will save this game from being a completely shameless clone, but I guess it's possible.
MMO burnout?
More like identical-game burnout. There's a profound lack of creative vision in pretty much all MMOs I've experienced since WoW. A few games have had some interesting features - but they're all afraid to do something genuinely new. Even the sandbox low-budget games stick to ancient formulas.
I'm not sure why so many people think it's about MMO burnout. It's like they think MMOs can only be done in this pathetically rigid fashion. Like there's the themepark and the sandbox blueprint - and all games will forever be the same. That's a sad disposition.
If you want to play WoW with a mild visual upgrade - with a bit of Warhammer PQs/PvP thrown in - then Rift is for you.
Personally, I'll play beta 3 for my final conclusion - but I don't see anything that could change how utterly samey the game seems to be.
I played the first beta and I knew the game had something I didnt like, but I couldn't Identify it. Now that I read this thread I know, it was the linear design, the fact that you can't choose, apart of that the game is pretty well done, graphics are awesome, animations are good enought but... I didnt like the combat, It didint feel like I was in combat at all, dont know if it was the lack of a "hit" sound, or whatelse, but it was mesmerizing.
WoW haters gonna hate...It's just life. Human beings hate what's bigger than us, we hate the "man," and a lot of us hate WoW. I don't hate WoW, I respect the enjoyment it gave me for 6 years. What I hate is Rift. Well, maybe, I don't really hate Rift. Yes, It was the most generic, boring game I've played in a very long time. Yes, the world designs were lame and the citys were tiny. Yes, the combat was "longwinded" and sleepy. I don't think I really hate it though. Actually, it had a redeeming part. The talent system is amazing and in a better game could really prove to be interesting.
I don't want to use the word "hate" because it is so extreme. I will use the word "despise," it doesn't mean the same thing as hate, it's a little nicer.
So I suppose I despise Rift. I was in both betas. This is just ANOTHER attempt to make a big MMORPG. They left out what makes a MMORPG good though. They left out solid combat, good lower level instances, and a well made world. I feel sorry for the company and people that made this. Morpagpagas are not dying, that is just a silly thing to say. This type of mmo is always going to die though. Why? you ask. Well, It's going to die, because it is an old formula. The old formula wouldn't be so bad if it was done in an enjoyable manner. Sadly, it is not.
Mind you this is just my personal opinion. I don't believe anything I say to be completely correct. If this game gets huge then I will admit I was wrong. I'm not a member of the current wave of gamers. I'm just a bystander on the outside looking in, waiting for a good mmo, and downing peoples hardwork with a couple of paragraphs A.K.A trolling.
P.S. I dislike this game. I never actually stated that

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release].
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
