ive not played wow since burning crusade and was looking at comming back
thinking i just need to get wotlk and cata and a sub as i really fancied playing a goblin
so i go to check my old account and i found it had been deactivated so i wrote to blizzard
and found i needed to buy a new burning crusade and original to play the game
as my old account was banned (strange i thought as i havent played it for 2 years)
so looking around for cheap prices for the game
wow original which you can get for around £7-10
burning crusade £8-10
wotlk £10-15
cata £25
i know the original comes with a month subs but it would require an aditional month to play just to get from 1-70 before i would see any new bits
so to play the game it would cost me around £50 i cannot justify that sort of money even if i could get back my old account the game is hugly overpriced
have you ever thought what's your 70 million+ a month in subs is going on most other games give there expansions away for free and earn way less than 5 million a month
£25 for a expansion is a lot of money and when you think you have to add a months subscription on top of this
just as a example compare this to eve online you have probably 3-4 months subs just for the same price as cata with a one month subscription and you get expansions for free
it feels very money grabbing and these prices are a lot cheaper than on the blizzard site which i think would cost you around £90
i think i will have to wait till the prices become a lot lower or wait till a set comes out which includes everything but i have a feeling it will still be around £50

So in your logic, if I work more and better ( I have lots of happy customers), my work is worth less than someone who is working less and worse...?
Wrong analogy. The OP quite logically justified the higher cost in compare to other games on market, which recieve free expansions with comparable quality and quantity such as EVE Online.
REALITY CHECK
It isn't wrong analogy, it is exactly what he is saying.
Wrong is your assumption that there is something like 'logically justified' - there isn't. If you find WoW expansions expensive and now worth the money, don't buy them. Very simple.
Well you could get everything for $20 US last week or so. All exansions and original - Cata.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
The simple answer is becuase Blizzard can, Sony and others only give away expansions cus they have to to maintain their subscriber base.
Exactly, the OP doesn't find it worth the money if he compares it with other games on market -- hence the thread.
REALITY CHECK
I don't play it for pricing.
Yes, Wow is making Blizzard pretty rich but that is hardly any news.
They are actually getting in less on it now than 3 years ago (due to more players in China who pays less than western players. Early 97 were 1/3 of the players Asian, mid 98 half, after that they have said that Wow sells a great in China but they have not given out any numbers. But even if it still is half that is more than a third and 12 cents an hour generally don't make up to 15 bucks a month).
Not that any of that matters, Blizzard is getting a fortune, that is called capitalism. If you think it cost too much for you play GW or LOTRO instead.
It is every players right to choose the game that fits him/her best both game wise and money wise.I think few people chooses a game because they think the company makes too much money, even though it of course would be nice to play less, it would be fair to actually lower the monthly fees now when the game has played in several times the cost to make it.
But I can understand that Blizzard don't want to kill the goose that lays golden eggs.
So live with it or play something else, there are cheaper alternatives.
Fair enough, up to each own.
I am just pointing out that the reasoning presented (they make more, they should charge less) is flawed.
Did you really look around for cheap prices or did you just go to Game's website?
You can get everything from Amazon UK for 40 with free shipping.
Also, yeah, other game's are going to be cheaper, they have to be to compete with WoW. When you're the market leader you determine your prices not the market.
I could imagine paying full retail price on Battlechest, Wrath, and Cata could be pretty expensive if all of em were bought together. Shame you missed the sale during Cata release where you could pick up Classic, Burning Crusade, and Wrath all together for $20. They might have another sale around christmas / new years, so wait a little while and see what happens.
It is the monthly fees that adds up anyways. On the other hand is my monthly Guinness fee more than 15 bucks so you have to choose your poison (I choose Guinness however and play GW right now even though it isn't really for the money. .
From the Blizzard Store:
Vanilla $20
Burning Crusade $30
Lich King $40
Cataclysm $40
Total - $130
You can get Vanilla and BC for $40 in the Battlechest, saving $10 for a total of $120.
Before Dec, Blizzard was running a sale:
Vanilla $5, BC $5, LK $10... Cata $40 for a total of $60.
$60 was a great deal. It really was a great deal. $60 for what you get for WoW is an awesome deal, considering what you get for $60 in buying other games.
That sale ended. $120-130 is a ripoff. WoW is not worth that. Heck, $40 for Cata is too much for what it comes with in comparison to what you got with previous expansions.
Can you find the bits and pieces cheaper? Yep, sometimes they even are not scams where the game is cheap but the shipping makes it just as expensive.
With the changes Blizzard has made to the game... they should have kept the $5/5/10 pricing for the previous boxes. Heck, they should make a $60 Mega WoW Box that includes all four.
Just my two cents...not accounting for inflation.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
Odds are there'll be a new battlechest /w LK coming soon and it'll probably be the same $40 the current battlechest. But, yeah, $120 is too much for WoW up to Cata.
and this is the exact reason i stopped playing wow. The expansions are ridiculously high priced... 50-60 hell what is it 80 dollars for an expansion? forget blizzard and fuck wow it's not even that fun tbh.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
expansions should be 10-20 dollars for somebody that already owns the game...... IT's like I have to pay the price for a brand new game every time they have an expansion. But here is the kicker..it's not a brand new game it is the same fucking game with extra stuff added.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
The only reason why the game is so expensive is because people still buy it, they don't care for the price, they just go out and buy it. It's still the biggest one, it's still the most played, and because of that Blizzard knows that they dont need to change prices or lower anything, hence why most games that see a plummit of people usually change their prices lower to hopefully get more people to buy the game.
So stop complaining.
PS - All mammals have nipples.
Get over it already.
Blizzard can milk the hell out their WOW fans. I am a Blizzard fan but would not buy an older MMO where i must pay for every expansion seperately. Most companies would have packaged most if not all of the expansions and main game together by now to make it a better buy for new customers. I just feel sorry for WOW people who decided to get another account or 2.
Blizzard's WoW is the market leader. When you are the market leader, you don't have to lower your prices to match companies that are struggling to compete with you. Welcome to capitalism, that how it works.
Well but if a market elader plays this game to far it sort of gets kicked out pretty afst as well. Also a part of captialism. Not that it happsn here but they make a kind of typical error in that system by try to find the point that they can milk the maximum or feel at one point to sure and overdo it which normally ends in a desaster. This happened pretty good to several banks and without support from gouverments they all would be away now. Ok taht is an other story.
if it had to happen it would have happened by now. BC, Lich King and now cataclysm has proved that Blizzard can charge whatever amount they like and it still sells like hot cakes.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I still think is kinda stupid. I know peoples that would never pay 130$ + sub for a 6 years old game. Blizz is keeping a lot of potentional new subscribers away. For me that's just greedy.
This exactly,
Close this thread and tell everyone that doesnt understand it to go take an economics course at their local communiity college.
I won't think about how much money Blizzard has gotten from me because of WoW. Stop this thread!
so...
Blizzard gave people insight into how they use some of their money at a GDC a year or so ago.
There are far more people on their payroll than some developers, artists and some gm's.
So it wouldn't surprise me that a large amount of money was going to support their infrastructure.
As far as the cost, I don't really see that as being a huge amount of money though I would be wrong to force my definition of what a lot of money is on the op.
But 77 dollars can be blown on a Satruday night without much thought if one lives in a city. So I suppose it goes more towards how one uses their money and what they value.
Dinner at a regular restaruant for you and a date can be as cheap 28 dollars or upwards to 51 dollars. I'm not talking about a good restaurant either. I paid something like 128 dollars for dinner for two people at Rialto in Harvard Square. Some would say that's ridiculous and a lot of money but it was worth every penny.
As for paying for expansions, I'd rather pay for an expansion that gave a substantial amount of content over getting a free expansion that was just adding a littler here and there to the game. If I'm getting an expansion I want it to be significant and keep me playing.
Let's just put it this way, I don't think any of Lineage 2's "expansions" would be worth 50 dollars in my book though I do think it's one of the best games out there. At least up to the time I played. I can't comment on recent expansions But Chronilces 3 to 6 weren't that great in my opinion.
So if Blizzard can give a lot of content for people that is polished and add to their world I don't see any reason not to spend the money.
