This game is very lacking in terms of content. It is very generic, with the same old "Click the button to watch the spell" game play, that is becoming very outdated. The class system is kind of cool, but nothing too amazing. Races aren't very stand out by any means. Honestly, there is nothing exciting about this game, and probably won't even test the next beta after receiving the invitation. I think I will stick with DC Universe and hopefully get an email in the future from TERA asking for a beta test. Those two games are where the money will be.
Why would you want to play the same fucking game that you've been playing for years, whether that be WoW or LotrO or whatever?
Do you also play the same singleplayer game for years while ignoring all new games, or eat the same food week after week, or watch the same tv show over and over again?
Some people just aren't stuck in a rut, ruminating the same game as - no offense meant - you see dogs sometimes chew the same bone indefinitely. Some people are openminded towards new things, also when it comes to MMORPG's, and those new things don't have to be totally, radically new and different from everything they've known before.
Your new jacket or shoes also don't have to be radically different from the ones you wore before.
But if it isn't radically different and the old one still works fine, why buy it again?
I played the beta, it was fun but like other said it's too much of the standard an MMO for me to worked up about it. Maybe after they put more details about pvp or raids I might think about buying it.
Like I said, when you buy a new car or a new coat, is it radically different from the one you had before? Do you also only play one shooter or action adventure game or RTS for years after years, never playing other games? Or stick with only watching one tv channel or one tv show?
Then why would you want to play only one MMORPG for years, while stating that some of those MMO mechanics bore you, never adding some more variety in your MMO gaming or switching to a new MMO game? Isn't that the pinnacle of boredom and addiction, having grown tired of something but not the drive to try something really new or even just different?
(and yes, that was partially rhetorical, because I know there are quite some people who are bored with their life or their study or job but who don't have the drive or initiative to make changes and thus keep stuck in a rut year after year, only complaining but not really changing or doing something about it)
If your shoes costed $15 a month, would you buy the same shoe so you could pay $30 instead? Didn't think so.
Now take that first shoe... buy some new durable laces, some tough rubber soles, and a good foot padding. That's WoW with all the expansions... so why a buy a similar STOCK shoe when you've already invested so much into the first shoe?
I think the point most people are trying to make is that... minus rifts, the game falls short of bringing new light. One good mechanic doesn't save a game from a dozen bland ones.
Think carefully about how you play the game outside of rifts. The immersion into the game is too similar to other games on the market. That being said, the game will do good, but it isn't as good as I expected. And I expected far from perfect.
Exactly. Its like an atomic unicorn, take off the hydrolic explosive combustable overdrive engine and you basicaly have the same atomic unicorn. Hahaha.
But seriously, enough with the metaphores, you had a very interesting point. $15 dollars a month you say? Ya see subscription MMOs arent just a product people, they become a service. If say World of Warcraft offers better service well you know wouldnt people go to the one with the best service which is entertainment. Census on these forums seems to be that Rift aint giving better service then ones already out hmmmm?
Actually, I believe the general population would prefer game content over service. No one is saying that Rift is lacking in the service area, they say it's lacking in content.
If a game has servers that never go down, and customer care that never put you on hold, thats great service. That is a far second to game conent. A crap game with great service is still a crap game. But PLENTY of good games have bad services, and they are still played more often then the latter types of games.
So no, RIft does not have bad service, but what we beta testers tested, SO FAR... it was a bit generic. If only a little bit.
I like the game thus far. Yeah it feels a bit like eq2 mixed with warhammer with a wow flavoring, but that isnt a bad thing. There is plenty to do in the game and people judging it based on the first 20 levels isnt giving it a fair shake. Wow from 1-20 is pretty boring as are most games.
In the end the soul system will make this game great if they can manage to get the pvp right.
Likes!!! Enjoyed both betas reminded me of the fun I had when I beta'd DAoC. The GMs were extremely helpful and actually listened to the players. During Beta 2 when the servers when live the first time all the players were talking about the voice of the intro sounding like the guys who says " Let's get ready to Rumble " A GM may a remark about that and the stated we could step into a slim Jim. It’s good to see that the GMs want to have as much fun as the players. I hope the game goes far. I know I will be there at launch!!!

There is really nothing in this game that will make me stick around.
But...I like it enough to play it till SWTOR or GW2 or some other game comes around.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

So in conclusion Rift is A.K.A WoW.

Summation of posts and my opinion as well:
Rift is a GREAT game for a first time MMORPGer (although I don't think marketting will reach these people).
Rift is not the game for MMORPGer veterans.
