DCU beta impressions

LGlassWalkerLGlassWalker Member UncommonPosts: 11

After my time with the DCUO beta, here is my constructive feedback on my experiences. Overall, I have to say “Is this it?”. Thirty levels, simplistic quests, basic collections, limited replayability. I worked on Warhammer Online and this feels like WAR 2.0, with no lessons learned. In comparison, both games are heavily reliant of PvP, but we know how WAR faired with that. IP, both games have a tremendous amount of it, yet DCUO seems to have let it go largely untapped where as WAR had the Tome of Knowledge and more. Both have less overall leveling content compared to most other MMOs.

On the positive side, the combat system is a nice change from the norm. This will keep those with the twitch fighting preference going for a while.

SOE, you’re letting the IP go to absolute waste. More content, more story tie-in, more quests, more mentors, more costume options, more side activities, plain and simple MORE MORE MORE!

The UI, kudos for trying to go cross-platform, but it’s clunky. Too much fluff, taking time and orientation away from the user, I often found myself disoriented going in and out of the UI as my positioning shifted. Maybe it’s me, but I like to see a fast, snappy, and simple UI.

As for how to improve the situation, first I would bring in more IP from every perspective (quests, lore, exploration, dungeons, mentors, etc). What brings those back to the comics and movies? That needs to come into DCUO. I could go on, but SOE’s been around the block enough times to know.

RATINGS (1-10; higher is better):

Quests – 5

Exploration – 3

Combat – 8

UI – 4

Achievements – 5

Use of IP – 3

PvP - *didn’t play enough to rate*

End Game - *didn’t reach in beta*

In conclusion, I think DCUO will not fair well. I see users giving the release 2-4 months and then moving on, with only a hard-core fan boys sticking with it after launch. Next…

I agree.  I liked to do quests for the Joker and fly around Gotham city, but after 3 days it became another sleeping pill like Fallen Earth. This game has one of the worst UI I had ever seen. The way they designed the chat interface is laughable. Glad I beta tested this game and didn't waste money on the box.

UI is bad allright. Actually not bad, it IS the worst I've seen also. I'd say way worst then XIV, actually I think XIV's UI was good. But yea UI is BAD.

GOOD STORY. Very nice Voice overs.  You should check this out for the combat:

after read that I think combat is really cool.

    Exploration is very well too.

I think if the game gets updated often it will be the best.

Well PLEASE do not say things like this without reaching level 30 :/

At 30 You get new PVP arenas and  DUOS mode which is like 10 more VERY CHALLENGEING missions.

New Alerts and about 6 new 8 man raids. Also 16 new challenge mode solo missions that can be done with a team.

my numbers may be wrong for the alerts and challenge it might be like 3 and 12-16 but everything else is right.

I love these posts about a game when no one has been able to test the final 10 levels of the game.  "Is this it?" well for you I guess it is.

not sure i would say war 2.0.  And i do not see PvP as a major aspect of this game.  Quest are actually really well done and story is presented extremely well without being an overload.  I am scared there is going to be a huge lack of content mixed with lack of an endgame.    I am also scared about pacing of quests,  they seem to line great quests up against each other back to back.  This can lead to burnout and making good quests seem worse then they are.  I kind of wish they had a lull in between quests campaigns.

More of the other stuff is fine,  but i think they have enough to launch.  More content can always be created later and people can resub.  As long as they don't pull a champions and try and unbalance the entire game due to there lack of content i am happy.

Why do people continue to call it "endgame" in MMO's?  It is called "High Level Content".  If a game is constantly supposed to be updated then why would they end the game?  They have said (but not official till it happens) that there will be monthly issues of new content for the players.  They have already said to some extent that they are planning more things that they couldn't pack into the release of the game at the moment such as light powers, green lantern related content (yes there is a bit in the game already, but more involving just the lanterns).

The PS3 beta is a mess. I'm playing on a PvP server and the pvp action is fun and intense (I'm used to the constant annoying ganking, it's not a complaint.) but the technical side of the game is taking huge hitches. I'm having constant framerate drop and consistant HARD CONSOLE FREEZES every 5 to 10 minutes. According to the forums it's really common on the ps3 version of the game.. The graphics and controls are fairly fluid and enjoyable but the overall experience feels very 'meh' so far. I've also had huge issues with my powers not even working when I'm casting them. I'm sure these technical problems are all beta related, but it's hampering my ability to actually play and test so...

    Currently playing - FF14ARR
Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.

I really hope this guy is kidding..

The game comes out in less than a month.. like 2 weeks i'm pretty sure. I've beta tested around 20 MMOs so far and almost all of them were identical to their beta counterparts at launch.

I don't think any of the PS3 beta testers are enjoying the constant console resets and corrupted hard drives lol.

They are anything buy pointless and soe would be wise to listen to what seems to be a rather common concern among beta testers.   How many games have we seen now where players quit before the free month is over and long before they reach max level content?

A game needs to get things right from level 1.  It should not leave players with a question of "is this all there is" within the first few levels of the game.  The end game can be the best thing since sliced bread, but that doesn't matter if the game struggles to retain players before they get there.

The developers have said that the games content is roughly split 50/50 between max level content and 1-29 content.  I understand it is just devs making claims about how much end game content there is, but if players are already questioning the amount of content in the game it raises the question about how much different the end game will really be.

Ultimately the people who like the 'lore' of a game will probably stick with it to see what comes next. I liked this game for its fluid combat, its looks, and its character creation. I am like many others wondering 'Is this it'? and just find myself a bit bored already. End-game content aside I am quickly wondering if I want to pay $60 for the box and $15 per month to find out if it gets better. I don't like comic books (anymore) and I especially didn't like DC (Marvel-boy) so I'm looking at the game as a potential gamer, not as a fan of the lore. I have not played another -comic-book- game before and was really looking forward to the change of pace. I jumped at the chance to roll a villian and beat the crap out of batman-wannabees ;)

After surviving Warhammer for years I'm not prepared to give any company 'a break' or my money if they don't impress me right off the start.

Chat = needs more improvemet. For god sake I don't want to press 'O' every time I want to switch tabs. I LOVE the /versus channel. Brilliant.

Guilds= need a guild recruitment screen or something. I have no idea how you form, join, or what the point of them is (other than the obvious). Do they level, confer bonus, have a 'vault', etc, or just a place to group and chat?

UI- I know this game has to work on a console but I use a PC. It is clunky and hard to navigate. I like the ease of a mouse-click. Too much 'pausing' to view screens. On the PVP server this can cost you.

Character Creation- Maybe I'm stupid but I'd really like to know how to roll a healer, tank, etc with minimal background research. In other words, yes I'd like an 'archetype' label (and yes I'm lazy). I like the variety and customization of it all though. I LOVE the naming options (Warhammer restricted you to one name only...no spaces, etc...hated that).

Party/Grouping- still have no idea how to form a party, join a party, or why you'd want to. Solo-mode so far.

Combat- Fun, fluid, and easy. Like it so far.

Levelling- I like fast levelling so no complaints here.

Overall- I'm on the fence but I really want to like it, honestly. 3 weeks to go, come on- woo me :)

Yeah people like that guy have no idea what they are saying. I've heard this kind of talk from a lot of hopefull sad FFXIV CE pre-orderers. And now they are sucking elbows to each other. OPEN BETA - IS WHAT YOU GET AT RELEASE. PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN THIS FINALLY.

As far as the game itself, I did a couple of hours of PS3 Beta, its interesting, not like other boring MMO you see with elves, goblins and rats :). Its definitely a theme-park MMO, but I guess it will do for some casual fun. Group system needs to be adjusted though since many people on PS3 will be playing PvE servers, do group quests, raid, etc.

Wow great idea.  I hadn't thought about this, but it would be awesome if you got notified and could do these questlines like one per day.  That or if they had staged releases like FFXI had where over the entire course of an expansion new stuff was constantly being added that forced you to space it out and made it feel like there was a real timeline and not just a cram of grinding.

Buy a new PS3? That's gotta be a first. I've seen people post this about computers, but a PS3?! Dude, that argument can't be made with a PS3 lol!!

The thing is we aren't in open beta yet.  Open beta hasn't started yet because they have yet to whipe the servers and open up the main game servers.  If you don't believe me then look at the server screens do you really think when the game goes live it will say "Beta Server"?  I am not saying the game is without issues, but I will not say the game is absolutely lacking and unable to run.  My PS3 version runs fine only had a couple of issues that everyone else has had with the freezing or the disconnect.

I played a few days on PS3 but with constant freezes just could not take it anymore. Other then freezes I did enjoy the game but not enough to want to pay $60 and a monthly fee. Also not thinking to highly of the cash shop they have advertised but then again we are talking about $OE. My guess is this will end up being Champions Online.

I’m sure they will have the crashing on the ps3 fixed before it leaves beta and there’s no way this game will be like champions online, similar, yes, but not the same, and yes, I find the cash shop annoying as well but remember it’s still in beta and still getting patched so the crashing isn’t representative of the live product you would be paying for.

You are pretty naive.  This game has been in open beta ever since they started handing out thousands of keys on MMO websites.  Just because its not totally open, or because they don't call it an "open" beta, doesn't mean that isn't exactly what it is.

What you are seeing right now is pretty much exactly whats going to be at launch, minus a few bug fixes and some tweaking.

  • CaldrinCaldrin Member UncommonPosts: 4,505

Got into the PC beta the other day and I gotta say this will be the best super hero game on the market hands down.

The game looks good with everything turned right up, combat is different and works well(shame about tab targeting), character creation is pretty good, lvling seems about right, the world seems big enough, PVP works well...

This is really just the start they have so much to draw on from the DC stuff that I can only see this game getting better.

Saying that I already sub to another MMO and wont have time to play this as well on launch but if I ever stop playing the other MMO i will probally give this a good go..
