Alright, so my favorite part of MMORPGs would be the Open PvP aspect. The reason I love this aspect of mmorpgs is because games with good open PvP are able to make me feel completely immersed in the game world, as everyone is acting with or against each other, and I love the feeling of being involved in large scale battles. Shadowbane provided me all of this and more, but sadly it had to die.
Requirements:
-It can be either F2P or P2P
-PvP/RvR has to play a large part in the game.
-It has to have a somewhat large open PvP/RvR aspect that's meaningful
-The PvP has to be large in scale, with battles that consist of large amounts of players and preferably other things come into play such as building defense or siege weapons/vehicles
-Has to have a decent amount of active players
-Can't be COMPLETELY time consuming. It can be somewhat time consuming, but not time consuming in the manner that EvE Online and Darkfall online are.
Games I've tried:
WAR - I actually liked WAR and think it's very under rated. I'll probably go back to this at some point but for now I wan't to explore the genre a little more and see if I can find anything I like better.
EvE - Seemed like an awesome game. Loved how players crafted the world completely, and also the idea of only one server. However, this game is WAY to time consuming for me. I spent hours grinding missions, and transversing from galaxy to galaxy for hours just to do simple tasks.
Darkfall - I had a lot of fun with this one, but overall the world felt kind of empty to me, was very time consuming, and it was also very hard to get into an active guild that would accept me.
Thanks in advanced guys!
Waiting for: Archeage, Darkfall 2.0, and Planetside 2.

DAOC or Mortal Online might be games to consider. Maybe Aion as well, though it does have a grind.
There aren't a lot of games made to fit the niche you're looking for.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Lineage2 sounds like it's roughly what you're looking for, with siege weapons, castle defense, and the like. However, the game's population seems to be hemoragging, so I'm not sure how productive that will be. Eve is fantastic, but you really need a good corporation to have any decent pvp.
The only other contender would be Aion, but the the pvp in that game isn't really open. You have rifting, and Abyss pvp, and castle sieges.
Darkfall.
Play conquer onlne, it has ausome pvp and they just got new expansion with new class. Plus there is a new server so you wont be trying to catch up to all the Elites!

DCUO --> Rift --> Tera --> SWTOR --> Guild Wars 2
They all have open PVP (I think PVP servers you mean right). I'm not sure about Tera. I've played DCUO's PVP, REALLY AWSOME. Read the fighting guide:

Try them all, pick as many

I was thinking about DAOC but I heard it was very unpopulated.
Is this true? Is it still possible to get into large scale battles?

DCUO will bore you within a few days, or last you a month at best. I played the beta for about 4 days and got sick of hearing my mouse click non-stop. If you enjoy button smashing, then go right ahead and play DCUO :P
Now, my suggestion for you would be to try Perpetuum. You said you enjoyed certain aspects of EVE, but found it to be too time consuming overall. Well, imagine the core of EVE, but remove ships and replace it with mechs. Terrain plays a crucial factor in PvP, and large scale battles occur on a daily basis. It's a brand new MMO, released unofficially in November, and has exactly what you're looking for. We just hit 15,000 accounts bought, and for a brand new indie MMO with no advertising, that's pretty impressive.
My only hint to you to help you enjoy the game would be join a corporation, and do it first. You'll have much more fun with a group of people, earn more money, and have much more PvP opportunities. Travel isn't such a damper in this game either. For $9.95 a month, and no box fee you can't go wrong.
DAOC != DCUO
As far as the OP goes, I feel you, I just made a thread in the Pub about this. Your best bet is really Wurm. Terrible graphics, but I finally got into it this week and I'm amazed at how deep the game is, everything I've ever wanted in a game minus the combat and graphics. It's the first 3D game I've ever played, where I feel like I'm playing a MUD. It's sad, that no developers have made a game like it with better quality. Wurm is really the direction I had hoped MMOs would have gone in the last few years.
Perpetuum is a terrible game, imho. Complete EVE ripoff, done poorly. EVE already exists, no reason to play a cheap knockoff. People cry that game X is a WoW Clone. But then they praise Perpetuum. Sad really.
You do realize that none of those games are actually released yet, right?

Ah crap, the poster above me is right I misread the two. I can't comment on DAOC as I've never played it.
DAOC has really great RvR (remember that DAOC is from the same people than WAR). But if you already played WAR and you want some most recent game, you should try Heroes of Three Kingdoms (HoTK). It has open PvP when you reach certain level. I'm playing it for now exactly for the same reason you play MMORPGs: PvP. For now I can't tell you much about HoTK, I've played only two days but it seems interesting.
Carpe Diem
Dont try Conquer Online unless you are willing to spend a lot of money to get geared up. Trust me. And the next expansion sucks.
Perhaps Archeage if you can get in the beta stage : http://www.youtube.com/user/archeage#p/u .

There is another side to eve that is 0.0, forget the crafting/missioning get yourself into a 0.0 corp and spend some time hunting/killing/protecting, i've been having a blast in 0.0 since I got there. Fire me up a message and i'll not only give you a few ideas but also recommend a couple of fun 0.0 corps that don't expect you to play forever.
I at the moment spend alot of time in 0.0 but alot of people in my corp and others I know do other things aswell as eve such as having a life
I'm in a corp that has some industrial people, others who mission and then there is people like me who just want to pew pew.
I recently bought 230 odd ships in jita and they are being moved to my home system in 0.0 (thought it was a nice christmas gift to provide frigs/cruisers/destroyers/battlecruisers fully fitted/rigged+ammo for my corpmates seen as dying in the roams I lead can happen).
have you ever played Aion or Lineage 2? If not, try them and keepin mind that these games changed recently and they are not as "hardcore" as they used to be some time ago.
Again I'm interested in playing Daoc it's just the population of the game that concerns me. Is it active enough to the point that there's still lots of big ORvR battles to be had?
I've heard many good things about the PvP in Lineage 2 but I also heard Lineage 2 was an extreme grind, and the PvP doesn't come until late. Also, as far as I know there is no free trial.
Looks very interesting however It seems to be in chinese. What kind of game is this exactly? I looked it up and read something about a player controlled PvP continent that sounded very interesting.
I was actually considering Wurm but was turned off by the terribly stiff animation. But since you bring it up, I think I'll download that right now and give it a shot.
As for EvE and PO, I'll probably try them again at a later date. My experience with EvE was me flying around to different stations for hours just to gather parts for a proper noob ship that was half decent. Even after I got all the parts, I had to wait days to get the proper training to fit each of the parts to my ship.
Waiting for: Archeage, Darkfall 2.0, and Planetside 2.

It will seem less populated until you reach level cap. I hear that many still play it. I only played it for a couple months and tried to get into Warhammer more at that time (which was probably a mistake).
Honestly, nothing out there that can match the thrill that Darkfall brings though. You don't get much of an adrenaline rush in other games. I can think of quite a few clans that would take you in as a recruit or perhaps an alt recruit tryout clan until you can win a duel with a regular member and other clans that would take you in a heartbeat just to have another active person to play with.

It actually doesn't work on my computer for whatever reason. Tried several times and after it loads it just crashes. I read that it might have something to do with a compatibility issue between my drivers and java.
