This is only my OPINION, also just by giving a list of personal preferences could start a war, anyway here is my list :
Rogues- My favorite, Very very good at one on one PVP ( also good for 2 on 1 because you can sap one fight the other ), very good at soloing, not liked by groups ( however with the dungeon finder it does not matter anymore ). Best class for sneeking places for re con. Best class if you like to use strategy for doing things that usually should involve groups.
Warlock- My other favorite, Very good for PVP with Fear. Great for solo play using Void Walker pet as a personal tank. Groups like Warlocks. It's a pet class, first pet is an Imp, stands by your side and cast, good to use in groups. Void Walker, Send it out and it holds agro as you kill your target used for solo. Warlock's get other pets, but will not get into it.
Warrior-Tank, Not recommended if your a noob ( groups will be counting on you to lead them, so you have to know the game well ). This class can be very very boring to solo, but makes up for it by being needed by groups. I don't think they are good for PvP ( they are to predictable and straight forward, they all fight the same, and my Rogue can kick their butts every time )
Shaman- Fun and strong class. Able to heal tank and dps, but totems can make this class tedious to play.
Mage- Very strong casting class, easy class to play if your like simple. Good at PvP, Liked by groups. Can be hard to solo unless your good at kiting ( keeping your target at a distance, using stun abilities ). Can be boring if you like complicated.
Druid- Never played but very very good class. Can tank, heal, and dps, OK for PvP but nothing great, Groups like you !
Paladin- Never got passed 30 but a fun class. They can DPS, Tank and Heal. Very good at PvP, Groups love them. No ranged abilities at least in the lower levels, and can be hard to play if you don't know what your doing.
Priest- Never Played one, People expect you to heal only, but really loved by groups.
Hunter- DPS only, very very strong class, very fun to play, good at pvp, can make most anything your pet. Kids seem to play them alot. Constantly feeding your pet seems to be its only downfall.
Death Knight- Never played them, and don't care to in the future. You have to be level 58 to play them anyway ( I hate them, and I don't know why ).
I hope this does not start an argument, as it's only my OPINION
Need to correct you some, hunter is ranged, dps, and offer some cc/utility and pets can off tank in groups, they also get group buffs with certain pets.
Mages offer crowd control as well as dps, and utility there.
Personally i would pick one of two starting classes which i think would give you a decent learning curve, both easy to learn, good in both PvP & PvE which is either Rogue for Melee or Mage for Casting.
These classes will give you a good understanding of the mechanics of the game without getting too mixed up in complex rotations. I would personally go with a combat build on your rogue and an arcane build on your Mage, don't worry about using specific talent builds, just go with the flow early on, you can always change things later as you learn more about the game and how the talents work.
For starters on crafts, i always start my chars with skinning and either mining or herbalism as they are things you can do as you level very easily and make a fair amount of money from. Only after say L60-70 when you have a decent amount of auction experience and money behind you already would i switch to actual crafting as it can be expensive to start, usually switching one of your gathering skills and leaving the other to support your crafting.
Good luck and have fun.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I started playing wow again some days ago, my first char since the first beta. I started out with a Priest and i did ask around in guild and on wow forums what spec to go fro Holy or Disc, in the end it had to be disc since i love working with shields and ppl said its the better option for pvp.
But when it comes to heroic dungeons you are not as welcome as a healing priest, if you arent in a guild run and the ppl know that you know what you are doing. Since you have to use multiple skills to heal so you dont run out of mana.
A druid with the different forms lets you try all of the different classes out to a degree. You can be a rogue in cat form. . a warrior tank in bear form or a caster DPS in Moonkin form.
They might not be as good as the others who do that one job. . but it is a great chance to get a feel for the play style you like while only leveling one character. . mind you leveling is fairly easy.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Don't worry about which classes are good for pvp, because this changes just about every content patch. It used to be warlocks, then warriors and rogues, then paladins and death knights, etc, etc. Bottom line, don't worry about it and pick a class that you're a fan of.
Mages used to have a lot of down time at early levels in order to eat/drink conjured food, but now that's no longer a problem. None of the classes really have that much down time as long as you play them well.
Healers and tanks find groups the easiest.
None of the classes are weak and useless, but some are easier to get going or solo with. Hunters and Warlocks are super easy to solo because your pet can tank mobs while you can sit back safely, dealing damage and sipping coffee. Rogues and warriors I found to be the hardest to solo quest with because they're very gear dependent classes. This may be different now, because the quest rewards in cata are quite good and the talent trees have been tinkered with.
When it comes to crafting, pick up first aid and a few gathering professions to start with (skinning, mining, herbology). First aid will allow you to heal yourself if you're in combat (always useful) and the gathering professions will allow you to make some gold at the auction house. Don't start up a "creating" profession until you have a lot of gold and are able to afford the recipes.
Hope this helps.
