Playing the beta now and yes, the game will be very casual friendly. The game has grown on me a lot and I'm enjoying popping in for a couple of hours here and there when I can... running quests and heading to Rifts to help my countrymen when they open nearby. Everyone's perspective on the game is skewed by their MMORPG linneage, but the bottom line is yes - I'm having fun. And this is coming from a dude who started with UO in 1997. Enjoy!
Yes this game is for casual player too, very friendly for solo player too. You can participe to the rift event in solo like with the public quest in warhammer.
This is quests and gears based, like most mmo this days, so yes you can enjoy it even for 5 hours a week.
At 5 hours a week you would hit level 10 in the first week. After that your leveling will slow a bit more and more. On average your time to level will double in the 20s and double again in the 40s.
So two to three weeks will get you level 20 if you don't stop and smell every rose and craft andcollect stuff. From there you are looking at two more months to level 40 and another four months or more to see level 50. So at minimum you will be spending 7 months total getting to max level with 1 character. Once at max level you will still have a huge amount of things to do, but then again you can stop along the way to craft and collect and dungeon run and rift hunt and PvP as well. The game really is very friendly to casual, group, and raid communities and has something for everyone.
They didnt say it was hardcore, they said it was hardcore friendly.
Possibly to do with the fact that there is no artificial limiter on how quickly you can level/skill up, you can spend a hardcore amount of time in the game, or you can spend 5 hours, pretty self explanatory.
Ye from the 20 first level at least its clear its causual friendly.
Also since you can get more skills sets available at anytime, you won't have to grind that much, since with the same toon you can have solo skill set, group, pvp (they all have to stay in the same class, thats the only limitation)... I was able to afford 2sets from playing normally the 3rd set is a bit expensive to buy but i think at lv25/30 it won't be a problem at all paying for it. So ye definitly causual friendly.
From my experience, having played both the beta 2 and beta 3 event (currently happening), I can say that it seems to be both casual and hardcore friendly.
The funny thing about any MMO is that you really can't take anyone else's opinion to heart too much, it's one of those things that you will have to try it out and see if you like it. I absolutely loved EverQuest and played it for a number of years (read 10+) but I just got tired of the grind every time an expansion came out. Since then I have been casually playing other games, but because I prefer the genre, I stay with fantasy settings. I have played a great number of MMOs, whether they are betas, trials, free to play, pay to play or whatever, and most of them get uninstalled after a few days of trying them out simply because they don't measure up to my own personal preferences in the combination of gameplay, dynamics and graphics.
I prefer my games to be fairly intuitive but not overly simplified, dynamic enough that I get engrossed in the story of what is happening in the game world and graphically stunning enough that if I crank the graphic settings up, I am stunned by how much work went into it. Many games fill one or two of these criterea for me, but very few have been able to meet all 3 for more than a day or two.
Everyone keeps comparing games to WoW, and I still compare games to what EverQuest felt like the first week or two I was playing it after release. While it had the problems that still plague many games (well after release in many cases), the whole sense of awe that I had at the experience (even though it was nearly 12 years ago) is what I look for in games now.
Easiest way to answer your question is by stating that if there is a free trial when the game is released, try it out. If you like it, great, if not, no harm done. If they have one that is available through people who have purchased the game only, send me a PM and I will be happy to see if I can get you a trial for it at that time.
To everyone: Happy Gaming New Year, may you defeat your bosses and get phat lewt.
They didnt say it was hardcore, they said it was hardcore friendly.

Lol, self explanatory ,lol
Since when did spending more time in a MMO become hardcore?
As for levelling up,well after 3 beta weekends it's pretty easy and fast to level up.
Nothing in RIFT is hardcore, nothing whatsoever,it's easy mode and beyond casual.
Is this game also for Casual players? I'm casual player(5hrs week).
This game is super casual. It's a themepark on wheels. More casual than WoW.
You'll get help with every quest through pointers and arrows. It's a super easy game so far and you can solo all the way to max level, as per official post.
OP this game was made for you in terms of pick up and playability. I'd suggest waiting for Open Beta (if there is one) though just to make sure you like it.

We all know that this game is super casual but more than wow? Let see after the release to see how much time it take to reach max lvl and we will be able too compare. For my part wow is hard to beat in terms of easiest and casual game but that just my opinion.
Can't be more casual than WOW... thanks to dungeon finder tool. Rift has no such thing.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I hear people contesting the hardcore crowd draw in Rift.
First we need to look at hardcore gamers and the reasons they believe they are hardcore in comparison to others.
1. more time spent playing per session. If you play for 4 hours or more per session you are hardcore.
2. if you are the one that attempts in-game firsts in raiding you are probably hardcore.
3. if you are into elite instances and raiding in general then you are hardcore.
4. if you live for PvP and play it as much as #1 then you are hardcore.
Does Rift have all this content for hardcores?
In the level 1 thru 20 there is a dungeon experiance you can do with a group and that experiance has a difficulty that requires a group that knows thier classes and can work together. The experiance wets the appetite for things to come. There is info out there about the way hardcores will be spending time in rift from PvP to tier 1 and tier 2 raiding.
So yes there is stuff for the hardcore crowd. You will always be able to push your char to it's max abilities and there will be challenges for you. In Beta those challenges are limited due to the level and area caps but on release you will be unleashed to do all the hardcore you can handle.
Comments
Without actually having played the beta, but having read a lot of positive and negative posts about it, I would suggest yes.
In fact, most of the negative stuff has been that the game is either:
1) too easy
2) too "on rails"
3) too like wow
4) too like WAR
Fortunately, all of the above seem to suggest it will be casual friendly, so my guess is you'd be good to go!:)

The nature of the Rifts make it possible for you to participate casually in major group events. It's amazing, really.

This game is very much for the casual player, and that's one of the few things I like about it.
It's a bit harder than WoW, but it's far easier than EQ2 and Aion.
Yep, so far its casual and hardcore friendly.
Thank you for all the replies guys. ill be sure to play this game with my friends, we all casual players.
How is it hardcore?
They didnt say it was hardcore, they said it was hardcore friendly.

I am in the beta, and can tell you it's no problem to play this casually.
I see many people compare it to older MMO's like WAR and WOW. It's a fantasy MMO so of course it will be similar to other MMO's
The rifts and invasions are fun, and I am guessing it will give the PvE servers "the nervous excitement" that are normally reserved PvP servers.
If you played and liked WOW or any of the more themeparky games that has been lauched since 2004, I would say there is a big chance you will like Rift
