i would tend to believe that SWTOR will be out before the holiday season of 2011...all indications point to it coming out sometime in the middle of the year

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

  • AnnwynAnnwyn Member UncommonPosts: 2,854

Rift will do alright with a decent amount of subs. GW2/SWTOR are being overhyped, and will start great, but quickly drop because players were expecting something else. Especially in the case of SWTOR. GW2 will be a success, but I don't think it will be as much as GW was.

TERA will flop and go F2P, much like APB.

Bethesda won't announce a Elder Scroll Online yet, they're already working on TES V Skyrim set to launch in November 2011. It's too late in the year to announce anything yet. Although I highly doubt Bethesda will work on a TES Online, it just doesn't seem likely, and much less for Fallout Online. I think this project might be dropped if it goes on like this.

    Happy new year Bill.

I have to completely disagree with your assessment of DCUO.  I have tried the game and find it no different than the other hero themed games.  Certainly minor differences, but all in all another so so game from SOE.   The only thing this game is going to do is do what you described for Rift, a rapid increase and then a rapid decline in players.   At least you can console yourself Bill with the fact that there will be plenty of new MMO's to try out this year, maybe another of them will strike your fancy.

TERA won't be the game that so many here on the forums think it will be.  It will be much like Aion, really not designed for the western audience of course there is the chance they could surprise us, but from the visuals alone it is easy to project it staying close to it's Korean roots.  I also think people trivialize how much work goes into normalization of a MMO, which might push a normalized TERA into 2012.

Bioware being the perfectionist company they are won't release SWTOR until late in the year.  I think you don't understand much about Bioware games if you think it will be earlier.

  • ValentinaValentina Member RarePosts: 2,109

Actually I'd be surprised if ToR made it before the holidays of 2011, and may be more likely it waits until 2012.

Not that there is any need to argue this point, but from what I have seen the majority of "hype" for SWTOR is coming from the crowd that is trying to flame the game with their false claims and pessimism.  BioWare is actually not hyping the game much at all, or at least no more than to be expected.

As for the authors article, other than release dates I think he is POSSIBLY pretty accurate, but only time will tell.  Except in the case of DCUO that is, but my personal dislike of SOE may be coloring that impression.

I think that originally Interplay was trying to bait Bethshoft into settling out of court for a massive sum of money and a mutual agreement to never speak of each other again.

now, things have gone too far, bethsoft tried to play chicken with Interplay thinking that their legal stab was a feint and Interplay burred the knife into their gut up to the hilt. you can't just say "oops, my bad" after drawing first blood. At this point the only options Interplay has is to do or die, either they win the lawsuit/Bethsoft settles out of court to let Interplay go ahead with the mmo, or they fail and fold: settling out of court in favor of Bethsoft would be percieved as quitting and serve as the final nail in interplay's reputation with it's fans.

we said goodby to our little shrine of gaming once before, anything less than success after rising from the ashes like a phoenix would just crush the faith before it had time to take root.

Two games that have been missed off the list. The Secret World and World of Darkness Online both games that I think will offer something different to the MMO market. I hope they do exceptionally well cause I can't think of much like them. Most games seem to be either fantasy or sci-fi with little set in a dark present.

Other than that I think very good predicitions with the exception of Star Wars ToR. While I agree that it will be a year till we see it where the team at bioware try to find solutions to adding their 4th pillar to the MMO game. I think the late release and the familiar formula set out by EQ or WoW will not offer enough to keep the players. So while it will be a criticial sucess the market will just have seen too many games already out in 2011 by the time it launches for it to break away from the pack and establish itself. And we all know what EA does if a game isn't making the profits it requires.

Neither Secret World nor World of Darkness have a snowball's chance in hell of launching in 2011. 2012 at the earliest. Look at the GW2 hype machine ( and even that isn't guaranteed to launch in 2011), and compare with the lack of info for these 2 titles. Even 2012 may be wishful thinking for WoD.

Is GW2 really is gonna revolutionize, reinvent MMORPG?? I kinda doubt it... We've seen 2-3 cool cinematics that present this epic world locked in a battle between good and evil, we've seen 2-3 videos of gameplay (that seems to be the same as in Aion or ther MMO's, i'm talking about targeting system and all)... and all people claim that this is gonna reinvent the wheel?? Why? what does it bring new to the MMO world? There are other games with good art design, what is the gameplay like? we have no freakin clue.

Before hoping for the Mesiah of MMO in the form of GW2.. ask yourself this... didn't Aion look like that? (you could fly, and there was an upside down world and the abyss)... wasn't FFXV the coolest game ever when you saw those cool cinematics?... look at them now, when people got a chance to actually play and get past the PR hype and crafter promo video releases.... btw Rift seems to be going in the same direction from what I see in the reviews.

The answer to "Is GW2 really is gonna revolutionize, reinvent MMORPG?? " is simply a Yes and NO. Personally I am a fan of GW1 and the more I read about GW2 the more average and dumbed down it seems to me. I believe they are trying to appeal to the masses and alienating their hardcore players. BUT, what would revolutionize the MMORPG industry is their revenue system. IF GW2 can be a fairly successful MMORPG in every sense of the word and STILL not charge a monthly fee or turn into a F2P style cash-shop game, then every MMORPG that launches is gonna have to think whether they can compete with that. All GW2 has to do is "not suck" and it will be a game people keep coming back to whenever they get tired of whatever new game they just tried. Anyone can buy a game, the monthly fee is what makes them think "is it really worth it?"

Wtf?  Why are there Chiss in the old republic?

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

Perfectly logical. They just weren't  seen much due to their location in the unknown region during the old republic era but they did exist

    http://www.swtorstrategies.com/2010/07/playable-species-of-swtor-chiss.html

Good run down of chiss and near the beginning explains why they could be in the region and thus in the game.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Ok, incase you haven't seen it yet, take a look at this. Its a Gw2 build creator, it uses the skills we know from the fanfests and what we know of how the skill bar works to create cool and probable builds. If after playing around with it you think the game is still dumbed down, I'll say wait till you play the game to finalise that observation.

    This is not a game.

  • SovejaSoveja Member Posts: 7

I played most of the P2P and Fp2 betas... and most have been quite boring, they bring better graphics, a few new things, but overall you still get the same quests (even if they claim they are new quests) and the same targeting system...

Tera is gonna be a big hit because it is the only one that actually revolutionizes the MMO industry... it has a fps like targeting system... let me explain... let's say you're in WOW, Aion, Rift, or any other auto targeting mmo... what do you do when you go with a party at a high lvl RB?? you use one hand to press F1, F2, while using the other to eat dinner and watch your favorite Tv show... you can ad lore, new classes, anything, but you'll always end up wit the same boring skill refresh based pve and lvl and gear dependent pvp.

I hope they pushed back GW and B&S (the other 2 games I'm hoping for), so that they can implement a new targeting system, otherwise, even if the graphics are good, I'm gonna get bored in 1 month.

    Predictions for 2011:

DCUO: Refuge for supers players that may turn into a Fortress of Solitude if it does not become more like a living world and less like a 30 minute bash it up. Best for a quick thrill.

Rift: Seen it all before MMO which will have a polished launch, its all round appeal will ensure its long term viability even if it shines in no particular area. Best safe pair of hands for MMO players.

SWTOR: Everyone will play it, everyone will have something to say about it. It will be a triumph of content over the cutscene as players realise that a story no matter how good needs good gameplay. Best for story.

GW2: It will awe with its innovation, it will shock with unpolished patches of gameplay. Will it be remembered as the game that ushered in new forms of play or the springboard that allowed later MMO’s to get it right? Best for trying to do a proper MMO a different way.

Earthrise and Jumpgate will both be a success for the type of player they are geared to. Best for new style of online game.

My biased list of guesses based on too little information:

DCUO: Now there's a game game I couldn't care less about. If it would drive off a cliff tomorow I wouldn't even notice.

Rift: Disappointments gallore: typical ok'ish launch but only 2/3-months to steep decline in subs. Due to bad world design for one.

Tera: Very solid launch + huge in the East. Not so huge in the West but still a breath of fresh air for many. Will keep increasing subs for a long time as people keep hearing good things about the immersive world, great graphics, fast paced combat and manual aiming.

SW:Tor: A better, more solid and immersive game than many expected but suffering from bland and uninspiring character design. Huge amount of players for three months but will drain heavily when storyline content runs out.

GW2: A solid launch and a success for years to come even though disappointing to many as it isn't so much revolutionizing the genre as people hoped it would.

Earthrise: Agreed with OP. On my "let's see what happens after launch before I jump in" list.

    JGE: Agreed with OP

Your predictions are way better than Bill's....

Overall most MMO's have it wrong... and this is my personal opinion.. in order to make games easier for casual playes and carebears, they destroy the MMO element, with instances, areas for solo pve, mercenary NPC... in late game, most MMO's concentrate on raiding instances, which you can do in Vincidcus and other semi-mmo's...

MMO's should be open worlds where players interract... a few games had it partially right... but failed on other levels. I'm talking about fantasy MMO's only...

Lineage 2 had almost the perfect recipe, but sucked due to grinding and bots

    - endgame concentrated on clan wars, sieges (500 vs 500, with 2-3 different allies fighting for one castle), mostly pvp

    - no RvR so poolitics, negociation, backstabbing were fun, we even had payed spies in the enemy clans:))

    - endgame concentrated on RB that needed 20-30 people, but because it wasn't instancedyou needed 200+ people to fight the enemy alliance who also wanted the RB... overall endmage was 70% pvp, teh game encouraged it.... while in games like WOW it's like 90% instanced farm with semi-mmo feel

    - very little quests, it forced people to team up and go farm different areas for materials to make money and craft, so people weren't chained in this stupid "I already did that quest, so can't come with you"...

SilkRoad had the "merchant - thierf - bounty hunter" which itself was a great idea for player interraction... but it seems people prefer games where they can isolate themselves in small parties and play retarded AI in instances.

Actually, I have already taken a look at it, and was saddenned by it. The skills in it look to me like someone grabbed Yugioh the card game. Threw away all the trap and magic cards and left only the very basic monsters in it and said "here you go". I loved the fact that I had all these abilitties with which to build my bar and the power to decide what and where to place each. Every time I had to make a tough decision about which skills to leave out or put in, it kept me interested in the game. The new system seems more like that of a hack and slash game to me. If they continued selling GW1 expansions I'd be happier. I also heard the argument of them just eliminating the useless skills but with elite skills like:

Plague Turn yourself into a cloud of plague. Any enemies you touch are contaminated with multiple conditions. [720s]  that's 12 freaking minutes of recharge just to spread conditions.... I call that useless. Actually, quite a few of the skills released in the demo would never make it into my bar.. especially elites with a 12 min recharge.....

I will of course do my best to play during the Beta and give the game a fair chance. BUT honestly, if it had a subscription I wouldn't even look at it.

Just judging from the information available, Tera has a much more fun combat system.

Not just yet... they will time press release with advanced promo for last Harry Potter movie, best chance to hear about this is this coming summer at earliest (my swag). There are simply too many new MMOs being released in 2011 for WB and Turbine to risk having it go unnoticed due to market saturation.

If the project exists (I am convinced it does) the reasons above plus negotiations with the Author may be some of the reasons the lid hasn't been lifted on this one yet.
