While I don't play World of Warcraft, hating the fact that it is the #1 subscription MMO game by far is simply dumb. Why do you hate that a successful game/company has remained #1?
I'm going to hope for the best and assume you meant to say that you hate the fact that no other company has created an MMO that was good enough to beat a game that has been out for 5+ years. Darkfall, AION, AoC, WAR, etc. have come and mostly gone (in terms of subscribers). How many MMO games have been released since WoW that were incomplete at release? How many MMO games have been released since WoW that had serious computer compatibility issues?
This world (and this website) needs to stop hating success and start celebrating it. I'm impressed and happy for Blizzard for providing a product that so many people are willing to pay $15 a month to play. Putting WoW as one of the worst facts of 2010 because it is successful is an insult to the MMO world and customers who obviously think it is the best MMO game.
DCUO won't be the most successful super mmo, but it will have the largest base. A lot of money has been put into DCUO (a lot more than CoH). CoH can have less subs and still do better than DCUO.
The bottom line is that DCUO is a hybrid. Its not going to please the hardcore mmo'ers or the fans of action games. A lot of boxes will be sold because its DC, but retention will be the problem. People will by the box. Some will like it and some won't. Of those that like it they will level up their toon and find there isn't much at endgame, so aren't going to continue to pay 15 a month.
Plus it is a super game. For wheverreason fantasy seems to be what most folks are interested in.
Overall the game won't do terrible and actually many mmo's would be happy to have their numbers. However SOE won't be happy, because profits won't be that great compaired to their investment.
As mentioned your assessement and predictions on ToR are likely inaccurate. First is the release time frame. It is likely it will be Q2 or Q3 at the latest but it will not be Holiday 2011 because that is the release for BioWares Mass Effect 3 and they will not release two of their blockbuster titles at the same time. Thats just a no brainer and BioWare is a very smart company. BioWare says its looking at a spring release and they've made no indication it will be different. They have been known to deliver when they say they are going to and I do not think this title will be any different. Its interesting how you cast such doubts about a company known to deliver and have smart business practices and in the same article predict sucess for a game from SOE, a company known to destory good games and push customers away.
Well for secret world and world of darkness there is no mention because we do not know if secret world will be out in 2011 i would predict 2012 for that and world of darkness wont be out till 2012 or 2013, not enough information right now to speculate on those titles although i am very interested in world of darkness.
Rift is my primary title right now followed by swtor, im gonna get both games and probably pay for both at the same time something i have never done before but mainly because i really like rift beta from what i have played and if it provides me several month of entertainment it will be worth it. swtor, what can i say bioware has never made a bad game ever so i will give it a shot and im expecting exactly what they are saying about the game and not setting my standards any higher than that. if people do what i am doing and make a decision to play based on that i think the game will do very well but if they expect it to be something it is not then i dont know how well swtor will do but all in all im looking forward to 2011.
oh and blizzards next mmo will be a sandbox and the reason for this is quite simple, they already conquered the themepark world so now they will set their sites on creating a polished well done sandbox, that is something that has never been done before with all the craptastic sandbox releases that have come out, blizzard will conquer that type of game also.
SW:TOR is overrated. Most MMORPG veterans will know not to expect anything else than a typical themepark, casual MMORPG with zero death penalty and an added Bioware quality single player storyline.
And I had high hopes for Jumpgate Evolution too.. Which I think will be a bust, IF it ever goes live.. I came from the days of playing the game Elite on my 386dx?, or something like that.. I LOVED that game.. Shame Eve is more PvP and crafting.. I would of loved to be more PvE and trading.. <sad>
"FINAL FANTASY XIV COMES BACK WITH PS3 RELEASE AND CLIMBS UP TO "THE BEST MMORPG COMEBACK OF 2011" ?
Good luck to all of us in the next year!
Pigs Fly.
Maybe Santa will give Square Enix another chance in the next year...
This game, with the right additions , i may aswell be the best MMO of 2011 or it will fail due to time that is running out..Or it is basically to late already, althou it is actually sprawling with player activity right now, but if this is because Square Enix not yet activated the subscriptions I do not know, but it has plenty of servers and players..
But this game has the chance of becomming the best MMO, but as history has shown a released game that has failed once will have an exremly hard time to regain anyones trust, aspecially with all the new games comming out constantly. Players want new things to play with not old rebuilt ..unfortunatly.
Why the hell they NOT added speach in the cutscenes for the mainquestline for this game puzzles me, just one thought,,
SW:TOR is overrated. Most MMORPG veterans will know not to expect anything else than a typical themepark, casual MMORPG with zero death penalty and an added Bioware quality single player storyline.
Just because you don't like something, it doesn't mean it isn't good.
I was under the impression that Fallout online was being built because Bethesda wanted interplay to make an online game and the law suit was all because Bethesda thought they were dragging their heels.
Two games that have been missed off the list. The Secret World and World of Darkness Online both games that I think will offer something different to the MMO market. I hope they do exceptionally well cause I can't think of much like them. Most games seem to be either fantasy or sci-fi with little set in a dark present.
Other than that I think very good predicitions with the exception of Star Wars ToR. While I agree that it will be a year till we see it where the team at bioware try to find solutions to adding their 4th pillar to the MMO game. I think the late release and the familiar formula set out by EQ or WoW will not offer enough to keep the players. So while it will be a criticial sucess the market will just have seen too many games already out in 2011 by the time it launches for it to break away from the pack and establish itself. And we all know what EA does if a game isn't making the profits it requires.
Neither Secret World nor World of Darkness have a snowball's chance in hell of launching in 2011. 2012 at the earliest. Look at the GW2 hype machine ( and even that isn't guaranteed to launch in 2011), and compare with the lack of info for these 2 titles. Even 2012 may be wishful thinking for WoD.
Fallout and Elder Scrolls also have a snowballs hope in hell of coming out and their are questions if GW2 and SWTOR will be out in 2011. So I don't think the predicitions are necessarily only games out in 2011 and rather games that will have a presence in 2011. Which both these games will likely do so.
SW:TOR is overrated. Most MMORPG veterans will know not to expect anything else than a typical themepark, casual MMORPG with zero death penalty and an added Bioware quality single player storyline.
Its only "overrated" if it doesn't perform, and there hasn't been a BioWare game in recent years that hasn't critically performed over expectations.
"BioWare's first foray into the MMO market will launch to much fanfare in the end of 2011."
To the author. The only time frame ever given by BioWare or EA for SWTOR has been Q1 FY 2012 aka Spring 2011. EA's Fiscal Year 2012 runs from April 1, 2011 - March 31, 2012. Making the launch window APR/MAY/JUN 2011. Why do people keep on saying it will come out at the end of 2011? This was recently reaffirmed by BioWare's Daniel Erickson (Senior Writer/Lead Game Designer on TOR) on G4TV's XPlay and by Eric Brown, EA VP at the UBS Media and Communications Conference.
For more insight on when TOR will launch, pay attention to the next EA shareholder conference call www.investor.ea.com which I believe is scheduled for FEB 1, 2011. This call will layout EA's stragtegy for the coming Fiscal Year and include a schedule of major titles organized by quarter.
The game has been in testing since late June. No major MMO has a had a beta test over 8 months. If SWTOR comes out in MAY 11, that would be a 10 month beta test. That would be 2 months longer than any previous MMO.
Are people just assuming it will be delayed? Call me crazy, but I thought reporters were supposed to report facts. If you're giving you're opinion that it will be delayed, shouldn't you say so, and not report your opinion as if it were fact?

Another poster who does not get Bioware. Just to clue you in, they are much like Blizzard, they don't blink if they decide to get a feature right and postpone a game release. SWTOR will release when it is ready and that will not be soon.
Sorry, if you were looking to play this game this summer, better make other plans.
Oh well I read the article 2 or 3 times before deciding to post. I had to say some of it had me laughing so hard i cried. Other parts of it made you wonder what the world he was a thinking when he wrote this.
DCUO in 6 months nobodies going to care, after the new wares off the regular folks will leave and the console guys will stay.
RIft I have to agree I think it will be big at launch but then also fail in 6 months after other games show up. Rift has been way over hyped and its only on beta 3 and already taking it on the chin for being a warhammer clone.
Star wars is going to make a lot of folks go omg. Now weather they will be able to keep the player base that actually buys into the game or not who knows.
The rest of the article I will not comment on other than thanks for the laughs.
SWTOR end of 2011?? why people keep saying that, so far spring 2011 is not the end of the year, and after like 3 years following TOR we know something about BW, they dont lie and dont talk about nothing at least they are 100% sure about it, BW keep talking about Spring 2011, could be May 4? or Jun? but definitely not the end of the year.
My guess would be they figure it's going to get delayed again.
However i'm not sure even if it gets delayed that it will delay to the end of the year.
At first i think they said it was planned for sometime in march, it was delayed to april-june
so far it's only been delayed maybe a month or so.
Is it possible that it could be delayed to the end of the year? sure, anything is possible.
However i believe it's more likely they are giving a window of spring 2011 so that they don't have to announce another delay should it happen, in this case they can just hold in production another month and still be able to hit the window, this gives them the wiggle room they need in case something doesn't completely work out right, my guess is they are shooting for near the beginning of spring but with the chance of delay due to last minute bug fixes (that occur in all games), they are allowing themselves extra room (to the end of spring) to get it out.
Myself if it has to be delayed to be done right, then delay it, i'll still be here (i hope) when the game launches. Right now though they are stating the target window is spring 2011 and until they really say otherwise it's speculating.
As for can it hit that window? sure can, we are far enough a long that they could release the rest of the info in 4 to 6 months to release on time. So far people have said it's easily possible. Anything can happen though, thats why the article writer is making a prediction, not a state of fact. Heck weather people predict the weather all the time and are usually only right about half the time (if they are lucky).
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
