After giving up on pay to play MMO's (quite a long time ago) and figuring out most f2p games are utter garbage, a few people told me to try FFXI. So, stupidly, I guess, I went to the local Gamestop and bought it. After installing for a while, I tried to put my CC info into the seemingly retardedly-named "PlayOnline Viewer" app, and it barfs at me when I try to validate a perfectly working CC that I've used (without fault) for 10+ years (Visa/checkcard). Annoying enough, when it gives me my error message about it timing out validating my credit card, it asks me to try again, and I have to re-enter all my info over again, instead of just hitting a "try again" button. How annoying is that? There's no button to even check that says "use home address as billing address", which is also annoying. Of course, I tried 4 times, over a couple hours, and still no luck. I can't even patch the game in the meantime while I wait for some kind of fix.
I sent Square Enix an email, through their support web page, but I don't expect an answer anytime soon and their online chat system is only available on weekdays. Yay!
Anyone find a way to get around this? I'm not sure that using another CC is going to help, and I only really have one other CC, and they don't take Discover. Yay again! Why get 10 CC's when one has worked perfectly for a decade?
I hate regretting when I actually pay for a game and expect that is actually works.

It sounds like that VoV (Verified by Visa) thing. The card you use has to be registered at some anti fraud site. The best thing is (sarcasm) not all banks that issue cards work with VoV. You can get someone that has the playstaion version of FF11 to hook you up with a sub or not sure if it still works but Firefox had some stop script work around add on. You might just luck out and your bank is Verified by Visa.
Thanks for the quick response. I've used this card for ALL my MMO subs, many of them, going back quite a while actually. I never had one problem with this card and a single game, let alone any problem at all on any merchant web site (like Best Buy, NewEgg, etc), or in any store (all), gas stations, etc, etc, so I don't understand what's going on. It's a bank card, but still a full-fledged Visa card, with the logo and everything.
The STUPID app you are required to use to register doesn't even ask me my full name, meaning, it does NOT ask me for my middle initial, which is used on this card. You can't even enter a space between your first name and middle initial either.
Just to see what would happen (if I would get a different error message), I entered garbage information in, and it did give me a different error message. The "timeout" error message doesn't really help me at all.
Thanks anyway. I guess some invisible higher power I've never believed in is trying to tell me I really don't want to play this game.
I did a bunch of digging, and only one thread out of a ton of them, seemed useful. I think you are required to have your Visa card be "Verifed by Visa", but upon trying to do this with what seemed like the "real" visa web site, I was prompted to enter my CC# a second time, for a web site re-direct called "53.com", which seemed horribly bogus to me. I'm not entering my CC# into some unknown web site. I guess I'll just call the number on the back of the card and ask them. You think if a company/game wants to stay in business, they would make it EASY to have people sign up for the game, not harder.

try using this method. I have done this with a pre paid card so I'm sure it will work with your cc.
I had this problem to and it was due to the fact you need to enter the information EXACTLY how your bank has it when setting it up. If you go through all the FFXI sites i wouldn't worry about fraud just be really careful there isn't anything on your computer that would send you to another site while doing this and you should be fine.
