Guild wars is its own special breed of MMO. They fill in the spots of the market that aren't taken. They beat F2P MMO's as players still have to pay to buy the initial game. However, they allow people to play either in a group or with friends. It also mixes a normal single player dungeon crawl game, with the ability to continually improve your character and not lose all your progress once you complete the game. I played the first Guild Wars before I forgot my account info to log back in a few years back. But I must say, I had tons of fun with the game. The ability to PvP in that game effectively without having to dedicate months to creating a level 85 character as I did in WoW for PvP was a nice change. I am hoping that guild wars 2 will allow me for that quick fix for PvP fun while i am not grinding out my honor points to properly equip my Rogue in WoW. All in all, I believe that Guild Wars 2 knows its purpose, and will do well because they aren't trying to be anything else other than what they are.
They must be bleeding or have lost huge amounts of money for not asking for a monthly subscription maybe. I mean ugh....
These are the things that I've wanted in GW2
#1 The same stuff thats in GW1 just more of it. (ALOT MORE)
#2 more classes - I mean thats what can be said about every mmo out there. more classes, more items etc. but ya would be cool if there were more classes to pick from. Thats why I really like EQOA (everquest online adventures ps2). 16 classes to pick from in that one.
#3 different kinds of pvp encounters. encounters like: fort aspenwood, team arenas, random arenas etc. I really liked the pvp in this game and im not that much of a pvp'er when it comes to mmo's but I really liked it.
#4 A less instanced world - Ya a world thats less instanced and more seamless would have been great but I can deal with an instanced world if the dungeons im crawling though are big enough.
Thats just a few I could keep going however...... what really sux is that if I really want to enjoy this game im probably going to have to plunk down and get at least another gig of ram and maybe an new video card. WHICH SUX!!!!!!!. with GW1 I have everything on low and I enjoy the game as it is. But with the new one the miniumum requirements are probably going to out pace my machine even if I were to plunk down $150 for ram and a cheap vid card. That being said its going to be a TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAME.
This is what I dont understand. If they made decent money off this so far. WHY CHANGE A GOOD THING. It doesnt make any sence to me. Ok put some decent graphics up there and LOTSA CONTENT and titles. but alas.... no.... There just going to change the whole game and screw everything up.
Can SOMEONE please explain why this game will hardly be anything like the original when it comes out?
Also can anyone explain to me why this company would screw up a really good thing?
And one more thing. Will there be anymore updates or campaign additions to GW1 in the future?
Is there an MMO that out there that isn't affected by Xao Ping Wang and their money grubbing macro bots?

I don't think ram matters too much? How much ram do you currently have? You might have to get video card. But even for that, I think you might be able to get away with something under $100. Wait until they release the recomended specs.
i only have a gig of ram in this machine. I only paid like 300 bux or so for it from walmart 3yrs ago. rams about 70 bux a gig. I'm probably going to need at least 3 or so. Since my machine only has 2 bays then im gunna need to buy at least 2 more. thats 140bux just in ram. maybe another 60bux for a cheap vid card. Then the game itself. Which is total round abouts 250 bux.. maybe 200 bux if I can get a decent price on some ram. See I can play Wow on this machine just perfect as long as i turn everything off. I can also play
Eve online, WoW, GW and some other f2p titles with my crappy machine and im happy with it. But to plunk down 200-250 big ones for this game...
I could....
#1 just spend 300 and then another 25bux and get an xbox elite with a subscription to gamefly.
#2 quit eve and save up money and stop being a cheapazz and get a better machine with at least 4gb or ram in it. And get GW2
#3 just play GW1 and hope they keep adding stuff to it when GW2 comes out.
#4 pray and hope that bliz nerfs the hell otta those heroic dungeons. (ya I know it was like that during BC but to put the casualer's through it again... sheesh ) probably not gunna happen anytime soon.
Since cataclysm sux and has KILLED the casual player, (another thread im probably going to start) I'm stuck with either.
My system has a amd64 3800+ processor, 1 GB ram, and a 8600 geforce vid card. I just recently around 6mo or so ago put in the vid card and only saw a moderate performance in crease. Ram is what I need. Everythings optimized and updated as well.
oh and ty for those 2 links gunna check em out. hopefully its all rolled up on one.
Is there an MMO that out there that isn't affected by Xao Ping Wang and their money grubbing macro bots?
I find the GW2 forum section here hilarious. Personally, I can't wait for the game. I just feel sorry for the people that are in denial. Everyone here has their hopes up about this game. Everyone says they're not getting their hopes up but it's a lie. You might be a little skeptical but it's not stopping you.
I know a lot of people will say this game will either do amazing or horrible but I disagree with that view. Why do people think like that? Is it because of everything ArenaNet promised? Everything they promise will come with the game in some way, shape or form. Maybe it's not exactly what you picture in your head but that's not their fault. That's just your imagination running wild at the possibilities. If this game is not amazing or the second coming of MMOs then it's going to be a good game. ArenaNet knows how to make a good games and GW2 won't be horrible. So regardless of what comes out of this, you'll have a nice experience.
Firstly you should put in mind that the chat system in DCUO dont help at all the community, in-fact its the opposite, the chat sucks hard, it got better, but still is horrible, no one reads a chat when smashing their mouse/gamepad or chasing someone
And as someone pointed out, if so many people cares for socializing, want to be in a group, why they dont invite their friends to play or if you are desperated invite someone that appears to be doing the same quest as you? its almost guarateed they will accept the invite.
[object Window]
Its not like you can[object Window]t group at all, you can, but you are not forced anymore which is a great move, what about those people that want to have some immersion?
They want to play at their own pace, discovering new things about the game, stuff that just couldn[object Window]t happen if you are grouped at all the time
"It has potential" -Second most used phrase on existence "It sucks" -Most used phrase on existence
Ceylous: Time for a new system. You really should not expect to be able to play a new game with that system, WoW and GW1 are 5+ years old and you can only run them on low with things turned off?
OP Nomss : Legitimate concerns but let's consider what GW2 is doing.
1) Replacing standard quests with dynamic events.
-I Often times you actually groan when you see someone else killing the mobs you need because you can't seem to collect the spider legs for your quest in most MMO's. In Dynamic events you are happy to see others and there is a sense of community and helping each other achieve the same goal without hindering them in any way. Dynamic events feel like they foster a better MMO community than standard quests.
- Standard quests have to be picked up and done in order, some MMO's let you share your quests from the quest log. However if the person hasn't done the pre-req quests they will see the mobs they need just sitting there but they won't want to help you with your quest because they don't have the same quest and you can't share with them. In Dynamic events not only can you do any event another person sees and will be doing, but you also don't have to share a quest or have pre-req quests done just to be on the same page as your fellow adventurers.
2) Removed the Trinity requirement in group content.
-In standard MMO's you need to have certain classes to fill up a 5 man group and if you don't have a healer and a tank you can't tackle content. You can't really play with who you want all the time because of this requirement.
-In Dungeons in GW2 you can take the 5 people you WANT to party with and go take on the dungeon together. This to me fosters a more inclusive and accessible grouping community.
3)Added Mentor and Sidekick system as well as adjusting your level for the content area you are in.
-Some MMO's have the sidekick/mentor system which adds another way to play with the people you want to and still be rewarded for it, giving a reason for higher level players to come back and help lowbie guildies or friends. Also by changing your characters power to match the level range of the zone this helps it so no one one shots all the stuff in the area and ruins your groups fun.
Add in some mini games, bar fights etc. and you have the makings for a better MMO community than I've seen any other MMO come up with yet.
TLDR: You have concerns about the Dynamic events making groups unnecessary, but it's replacing standard solo quests which never required groups in most MMO's anyways and it's replacing it with a gamestyle that promotes community.
A perfect comparison is age of conan from what i can tell so far. persistant zones with portals (although gw2 has far more zones, each about the size of the biggest conan zone), and instanced dungeons for your party.
I think Guild Wars will be instanced in a way where it is still persistent but the instances just ease up the load on servers. This is how they don't have a subscription fee. The instances are just like doors that are all connected.
Lets say you are in a town with a friend. This town is its own instance. You decide to go out of the town without your friend and are shown a loading screen. When the loading screen is done you are entered into an explorable area.
Next, your friend leaves the town in the same way you did. Same loading screen. He/she then ends up in the same instanced world and server( he/she ends up standing right next to you in the instance). " Instanced/persistent world"
So its like how you were able to visit different districts in Guild Wars 1 except now it is world wide and you no longer have your own personal instance(except for your personal housing district). Public instancing is probably a better word.
Either way I think this puts less stress on servers.
Aye, it's basically how conan does it (which begs the question why did anyone pay a sub for that half baked game?) except guild wars 2's zones are far bigger than conans.
To be honest it won't matter much, as they've said going through portals results in similar load times to guild wars 1 on most systems, which is basically about 1-3s. So they're unlikely to get in the way much. Also, the map (being based on gw1) already convieniently had a few mountain ranges which caused funnels at certain spots anyway, making zone placements fairly easy and not intrusive.

This is usually refferred to as a zoned game. Its persistant, but not seamless like WoW. You just come to a loading screen when you go to another zone, everything on the other side is still persistant.

Its hard to say if its seamless or not once you get into the open world. We know that there are load screens between the major cities and the open map, but not if there are load screens between map areas. I have yet to see any game footage from the demos of a person walking into a different zone, they would always teleport, and for obvious reasons that would cause a load screen. Now if someone were to walk... we don't know. It could employ a similar method of zone loading like WoW has--once you reach a certain point on the map, the next zone begins background loading, a.k.a seamless. After all, the same guy who made that loading process for WoW also designed the GW and GW2 engines.

The city loadscreen is when you enter your home instance (it is 20% or so of the city). There are no loadscreens if you walk from one side of the game to another.
The engine are made to be zoneless (well, there are still zones but it will be no loading between them).
Strain wrote about this years ago on a GW forum I used to be at. Nice fellow.

It's funny because WoW introduced forced trinity in grouping. EQ was a complex enough game that there were other methods of doing things that were usually much better.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

I've seen an explanation on these systems, and apparently it takes extra servers to handle the loading between the zones. Based partly on the fact that GW2 will not be P2P, I'm geussing they are going to forgo the expense of these servers. I also remember seeing a screenshot of some Centaurs with a shimmer in the background that looked similar to the one at the entrance to Divinity's Reach.

But that proves nothing, we already know there will be instances in the game as well as open world. Maybe itr was a dungeon entrance or another kind of instance. The entire world is not open, few games have that.

I don't think server costs will factor much more heavily for several reasons. The first is that server costs have dropped dramatically since the seamless zone loading was invented; another is that the tech/programming behind the seamless mechanism should have advanced. And the most compelling (at least in my mind) is that Anet has exceptional programming for data handling; case and point being GW1. According to some game designers and core programmers I've talked with, the heavy instancing used in the original should have required more server power than a comparable sized persistent world due to each instance theoretically needing a new process thread. Yet, somehow GW1 didn't require massive server farms (in fact they consolidated the servers just recently) and, in addition was able to offer background updating while playing (which should also require a separate server)
TL;DR: I don't think Anet is concerned with server requirements.
PC gamer has touched on the fact that there will be instances, and we have seen in the game play videos that there is indeed an open world as well. I remember an article in PC Gamer where they talk about a quest where they get brought into Ascalon to fight along side Destiny's Edge, and you have to actually combat against the NPC's who are around in Guild Wars 1.
Also reading many of the experiences from people who played the game, it seems that anyone can join in an event at any time. There is mention of an attack on a large dragon where the party kept getting wiped, only to be saved by a random group who came in and joined in on the battle. I am assuming that there will be "levels" to the challenges, and while some can be completed solo, I am assured that some will also require large groups in order to finish.
Also GW 1's entire PvP was group based, there was no solo PvP at all, and we already know there will be heavy group based PvP in GW 2 as well.
I know I played through the entire story line in GW 1 with my friends, and I plan on playing all of GW 2 with my friends as well.

The quests are public, people automatically are grouped when you do public quests and you get rewards based on performance

Its not like you can[object Window]t group at all, you can, but you are not forced anymore which is a great move, what about those people that want to have some immersion?
They want to play at their own pace, discovering new things about the game, stuff that just couldn[object Window]t happen if you are grouped at all the time

TLDR: You have concerns about the Dynamic events making groups unnecessary, but it's replacing standard solo quests which never required groups in most MMO's anyways and it's replacing it with a gamestyle that promotes community.
really good points. thank you.

-I am here to perform logic
Disagreement Heirarchy
Disagreement Heirarchy
