With the Holiday sale I'm debating heavily on purchasing this title, i can fathom throwing 30 at a game on a chance. But real life might be the real downfall for this game, as its one of the main reason I never tried Darkfall.
Got a fair amount of time to play (4-5hrs/day) for about 3 more weeks, then I'm limited to about an hour or two tops during the week for six months or more, and a couple more during weekend(I'd say 15 hrs for a total week) Am I able to log in and do stuff effectively, or will I be contantly worried about being killed/etc and just trying to redo what I just did each week?
I loved shadowbane and unfortunately its not coming back(not including the emu work, though its been renamed) and I know I could play that an hour or two a day and had a blast, so I'm hoping it appeals to that crowd, anyone of you who played shadowbane feel the same type of rush?
Last the skill system, are you able to change once your spend your set points(ala pre-cu swg) or is it set in stone?
Thanks for the feedback.

There is nothing casual about MMOs like MO or Darkfall. One or two hours a day won't cut it but that is my personal opinion. games likes these are huge time sinks.
Bite Me
If you want this type of game, Darkfall is a much better bet.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
i think they raised the time to gain skills some but i used max out character in day and end of second day i had somewhat best weapon and armor money could buy at the time (obviously one is needed to know what he is doing). might have changed like i said but not likely that much, and is fastest character growth compared to any other MMO ive played.
skill points you can remove from primary skills. system automatically untrains points from unwanted skills you have chosen when your more wanted skill is trained. some skills are secondary by nature and dont take skill points at all.
edit. sorry i lied a bit. thats for warrior type character for mages and such it takes bit more playing. and i forgot skills you have to read books for. they take sum of hour to complete but theres reading skill that raises amount of skill gain. majority of skills can be trained just by using them.
Yeah, assuming darkfall added a skill cap so the casual gamer can actually compete with someone who joined before him...
MO is pretty casual-friendly compared to other sandbox games ( but not as casual-friendly as most themepark games). MO has a skill cap that you can reach in a couple weeks of VERY light, casual play. It's not as easy to jump on, do a quick quest/raid/whatever and jump off, as it is with a themepark game though, but you don't have to work for such a long time to be on a semi-level playing field.
OP:
Shadowbane was one of my favorite games
Mortal was one of the worst I ever played

i'v never played Shadowbane.
here is the thing about MO, the only grind there is is for gold or if you want to mine and extract metals. if you are a fighter or a mage it doesnt take long at all to max out your character. after that you basicly have to pretty much only replace the armor/weappons/horses you loose when you get killed in pvp. just about everything in MO is player made and the way the game is set up there is no way you can be completely self sufficient unless you have multiple accounts. in short you are forced to buy the majority of things from players. this is were being in a guild is extremely important otherwise you'll spend a grand majority of you time looking for people that can sell you what you need. i'v spent hours in Fab shouting for someone to sell me a horse or a bow or a sword to no aveil. it was just the wrong time of day and the crafters i needed were not online.
if you are in a guild you just ask in guild and people log onto their crafters and sell/give you what you need.
pvp in itself is hit and miss. you can be riding arround for hours on your fighter and not find anyone to fight, then get ganked by a group of unfriendlies and be killed in 30 seconds and loose everything. then you have to spend then next half hour finding a priest, resurecting and running naked back to town to re-equip. pvp is also a mostly group affair and doing the solo ranger thing will most likely only get you killed by groups of players out on the hunt.
MO is not grind intensive but it is solo unfriendly, it is also nube unfriendly. it is ment to be played in groups or guilds and wile it is possible to play it solo it's much much harder and you end up missing out on a lot of things (like large scale pvp). there is also no "general" or "trade" chats so it can feel very empty and lonely when played by yourself.
yes, you will be always afraid that someone is just waiting arround the corner to kill you and take all the stuff you have on you. yes, you will spend a lot of time re-equiping yourself especially if you play solo.
you can learn anything you want and change your talents at any time but you only have 1000 points total so in order to learn new skills you'll have to "forget" something you already known. to master any skill you have to put 100 skill points into it, so that leaves you with 10 maxed skills at any given time. what those 10 skills are is completely up to you and you can change them at any time.
what you can't change is your attributes( max streght, int, dex, etc) which are derived from your race.
fixed it for ya. At the absolute latest, you played at launch which was half a year ago. Even then, you'd made up your mind in Open Beta.
Actually, MO is one of the most casual MMOs I have ever played as long as you do not play as red, then it becomes way more hardcore and adrenaline pumping.
You will find WoW 10x more hardcore then MO as in MO you can log in for one hour a day and still make huge progress, especially now that making 3 gold takes 5 minutes.
Sounds good guys, more so what I was looking for, looks like I'll pick this up in a couple days then once the holiday settles down. Thanks for the replies.
It might look 'hardcore' only if you are newbie. When you'll learn what and how you will do fine and find it good.
I played SB on/off for almost 6 years and was hoping MO would fill the void. You wont find the the rush or emotional side of SB. I find MO to be a shell of game and more frustrating than anything. (coming from a guy with 6 years of Sb.exe) Population is horrid, many game mechanics just suck or are broken and technical problems. I've been a fan of Shadowbane and pre-Trammel UO, but MO is hardly a game. MO isnt very time intensive in regards to character development, but its tedious and gear driven.
Youve waited this long, Id wait a little longer. Starvault will need to makes some changes within the next month or two.
I win!!! LOL@U
Fixed for accuracy.
Thanks, but my post was just fine and doesnt need your editing. But Im very happy to see you only find my playtime questionable in the above post. I've had access to an account well before open beta and after.

The great thing about Mortal Online is YES you can play for just 2 hours a day and have fun. There really isn't much of a grind in this game and you can max your stats and be competitive in PVP in seriously under a week. It's not like Darkfall were you have to afk grind swimming to raise up your stats. Skills are also fairly easy to raise up. Since Mortal Online is more twitched based then gameluck or level based a new player will have much greater impact on the battle field then say a first week player in Darkfall or WoW.
There's a lot of Shadowbane refugees in Mortal Online and there's features in the game similar to how Shadowbane was except without the massive hordes of chinese players.
I suggest buying the game and trying it out. It's worth it.
Never trust a screenshot or a youtube video without a version stamp!
I'd agree with the above - especially about the lack of a grind. MO is pretty easy to get into as far as that is concerned.
The game is not without its problems. Few games are. But it is one of the few real sandbox games out there, and is definitely a lot of fun.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
I cant think of any SB guilds actively playing MO and what features would those be?
I win!!! LOL@U
I still play MO. And I agree the only grind is the gold. And the grind has gotten worse with the implementation of butchery and the new slagging system.
If you are just a fighter with fighter skills there really is no way for you to make money right now. And I also agree this is a non solo friendly game, which does make me kinda poed, I loke to solo.
As far as comparing this game to Shadowbane. A game I played for years. There is no comparison. Shadowbane was a much better game. Hopefully SV can make MO a much better game but time will tell. I am not loggin in that much as I have become pretty bored with MO. I am basically just playing it until one of the other sanbox titles come out.
Another one who confused solo with self reliable. You can play with only one character on your account and still progress, you can play solo but you can't play alone, for that you have WoW and Aion. In MO you have to interact with other players if you like it or not or you won't get far. And grind for gold is 100x easier now when butchery is in. I had to kill 15 wisents, often more to get 3-4 gold, now I have to kill 3-4 other mobs which are closer to get same result, so there is less grind then ever now and you don't need as much gold as before because of altered skill system.
No way to make money as solo fighter? Please... I am butcher myself(had char prepared before skill went in) and I know a dozen of solo players who are not afraid to use my services-I buy carcasses for a good price and we both profit, economy is going in right direction. Every town got its butcher besides red towns for obvious reasons(that red clowns kill everything who they are not bbfs with and then some solo qq that no one will trade with them lol).
So no self sufficency, but hell yes for solo if you know how to play.
I think you have solo and self reliable confused. Usually they mean the same thing. Let me back track a little, I was actually in a guild that was in beta and the guild stayed in strong for the release. But with this and that most of them quit the game. Personal reasons, game wasn't for them, or they got sick of SV not being able to fix the game, whatever. So now I am more of a solo player. I am not saying I do not like butchery. I think yeah it is a good idea. If we had the pop we had at release. You are right there is usually 1 butcher per town. But I have waited more time then I want to wait in an online game looking for one, I work and have a gf I only can play a couple hours at a time. I do not want to sit in a couple towns more than 5 mins looking for someone to by my side of beef. It is bad enough looking for armor and gear. Yes the pop has spiked a little but they are all noobs. And I can not get gear from noobs. And I really do not want to join a new guild hoping that if the game gets better my mates will come back. I did not meet them in this game I am in a guild with people I have known for a long time and have played with them in other games. (EVE, WAR, UO,)
If there was dungeons that actually dropped loot and coin for a fighter type class. I would not complain at all. I am not playing MO to follow herd migrations around and get carcasses and bring them to town for a butcher to butcher. I am playing MO to play a fantasy game not to play Hunter or Cabelas Big Game hunt. The one thing we have been missing is these immersive dungeons with treasure and loot. The Risar Dungeon is still bugged to hell and the Spider Queen is not much fun at all. I would nto call those dungeons. The Dungeons in UO were awesome, and that was 13 years ago. I am still waiting for something to even be on par with that in MO.
I didnt know they were having a sale, thats cool!
I was giving Mortal Online a real good hard look and still have passed on it hesitantly and for now i think im going with DCUO.
Mortal does sound very cool tho. How much is it normally? $49?

darkfall could be a fun game but it's filled with bored vets that have nothing better to do than grief new people to the game, causing them to quit, lol..

is confused... and a frustrated adolscent... MO is a sanbox.... solo is hard, but telling someone to play wow, you really don't know what MO and a sandbox is all about.
