All Points Bulletin: Week 7 Update

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

GamersFirst CTO and COO Bjorn Book-Larsson has updated the official APB Reloaded blog with a new post. In this installment, Book-Larsson goes into detail about the team's two highest priorities: The closed-beta client build and network redesign.

Therefore this week I will focus the discussion on item (2) that has to be fully sorted out before APB can go live; a brand new network for GamersFirst, and that means a brand new network for APB as well. This will likely be my last post that exclusively deals with items "external" to the game itself, since starting next week our discussion will focus on in-game features (so for non-tech-heads, this might be a good place to stop reading :) ).

Separate and apart from the actual APB game development efforts, our top-to-bottom network redesign is now a prerequisite for the APB launch. The redesign is not a small nor simple task, especially as we are in the midst of launching several other new games, trying to minimize any downtime to all our existing games during the transition, and on top of this, are also poised to launch APB with its massive network demands. The best analogy is that what we are attempting to do is like changing the engine oil while speeding down the highway at 100 miles per hour. Really tricky stuff. And bound to cause some mishaps along the way.

I never really had lag except when they turned on Punkbuster.  But it sounds like they will be decreasing lag even further with their new network. If that's the case, that is exciting news.

Sucks we have to wait until February though.

I can't wait. I got in the beta for the first one but my laptop got a virus. I got a new one and this was happening. Lol i get a chance in the beta again!

Never had any lag. Game was always smooth as buttah.

I'm really glad to see that this company is thrilled to have APB in their posession. I hope they make a bundle off of it.

Punkbuster was the reason they were able to hack..

What I mean by that is the cheats being used in APB were  designed for when Punkbuster was turned on, or off. Its completly punkbuster proof.

Punkbuster is an outdated relic that sucks up bandwidth.

Only a company stuck in a contract, or are very nieve use it. Or just plain cheap.

There are several websites that sell Punkbuster proof, Always updated programs.

The cheat site that people used in APB even has K2 games on its list so...

expect nothing less then the crap we had in the first APB..

Companies wont touch these guys.. and if they did the people making these cheats could just release them for free and totaly wreck utter hell on everygame that uses Punkbuster.

People will do anything within their power to win a compeditive game. The only way to stop people from trying to cheat is to be smarter than they are. Smarter than all the brains of the online community vs your dev team that is. The funny thing is, I've seen devs win that battle before lmao... I feel so stupid...

Ugh, cheaters can be stopped within a subscription based environment very easily, they chose not too do anything about it because the game was design failure from the start and they realize that this game was desigend to be hacked and abused... So deal with it..

As for a solution, it was always present, just never acted upon...

APB was the biggest scam of the century, If i had it, i'd bet more than half of the 100 million dollars this title lied about for production went to fund that other game as they learned early they were in trouble... You are wasting your time giving this game any hope.

Punkbuster had zero to do with it, the game network design was too much so PB was never even activated until the public forced its hand and the result was network overload.. please know what you are talking about, world has enough trolls

You obviously didnt see the failed game design created a 2% daily increase in bandwidth..and everyday got worse and worse until they had to bail

At the very least , know what you are talking about. My comment was talking about the cheats.. Not the poor netcoding nor the economy that would eventually bottom out due to zero loss of items.

I was adding to a previous mention of the cheats and explained why there was such an issue with them. The dev studio was screwed either way they went, they had a contract with Punkbuster and was stuck in it. People left in droves. We had the biggest guild in APB over 200 members strong, through beta and till the end. I know exacally what the issues were with the game, and most could have been fixed but the main hang up was the contract with Punkbuster. The cheating was so bad. Helios made a killing off his cheats. And there was no way to stop them, unless they brought an in-house anti cheat program out. But as i said they had a contract with Punkbuster.

As for subscription based MMO's that use punkbuster and killing off cheats, again you dont have a clue. If punkbuster is used to stop cheats and punkbuster cant detect these cheats then how do you stop them? You have to manually veiw them using the cheat and that takes many many peoiple and lots of guessing. Sure you can give player ID's to npc cars and peds but that will only fix the radar hacks ( Darkfall did this), it doesnt stop the aimbots and the xray vision cheats, the list goes on and on.

Anyone that has been gaming for any length of time knows the power of these programs.

And lastly you wouldnt know a troll if it blew your wig back so sit down shut up have a moonpie and coke, cause you just dont get it.

Im looking forward to getting back into this game.  And it being non-subscription is just more appealing.  Lets hope they have the back-bone and dilligence to beat  hacking down substantially more than RTW did; which was nothing.
