Lol old school and this are completely different, I’ve done the grind thing and it’s not even effective. I would gladly sit at a spot and pull mobs for 6 hours if there was such a place and it actually gave decent xp.
Leve’s on the other hand are worthless after you burned through your favor and can only do a couple a day.
I'm in game now and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to group and kill.....I killed a few mobs on my own and gained sp and exp for them all. Doing by myself is.....not why I'm playing an mmo?
have you played recently....they changed it so that you get exp and sp for every mob instead of random skill ups.
Not finding a group is becouse the server population is low( im guessing) my last server /who all listed 481 people online total and there isnt squat for group content other than milking the xp bonus from others leve's
I think the fact the this game isn't even charing it's sub fee, they let go one of the major employees on the project and that it's hitting most of the disappointing game of 2010 lists has nothing to do with it trying to be old school and everything to do with the fact that it's terirbly implemented.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
Hmmmmmm, you know, in some strange way I suppose you could call lack of content "Oldschool."
^^ lol true true
just like i said during it launch month, let this game RIP by itself.
move on guys...
AMEN
All you guys that complain about a lack of content are the ones just grinding leves I'm guessing. Go look for !'s above someone's head elsewhere. Theres plenty of content to play, just depends on the person. Would you rather grind quests or mobs(or dungeon queues). Either way it's a grind. There are no great quests anymore even at level 80 in any game you'll still get "go kill X amount of Y". So enlighten me on this term 'content'.
I can see we will be at odds on this topic and don’t want it to turn into a personal attack.
.
I want to like ffxiv and want to be able to come back to it. I feel that I gave it more than a fair try and ive looked passed many other things becouse i like the idea and the feeling of the game.
Ok, there’s content in ffxiv but it does run out, you can’t tell me that npc’s with !’s above there head’s is abundant and dungeon groups are easy to get into, hell, no one uses the lfg function and grinding isn’t really effective unless you want to run around zones with low spawn rates for an eternity
I’m used to and prefer grind games but its more than a lack of content its many other things that drove away the player base No auction house for one, and yes I would consider a auction system content instead of aimlessly hunting players bag after players bag with players sitting all over the major cities, to random equipment or empty bags in areas that are for specific items,
It has been a few weeks since I logged in and there was mention of a searchable items feature but I couldn’t find it , but yet again that’s just another reason for the player base leaving and I could easily go on. All of which I consider content
They didn’t even add a recipe book until a few weeks ago. “Content”
I say give it time, I think they'll keep the FF feel with the slower combat for sure. Hope they add a lot of little side quests and stuff on top of the main story lines.
Personally I wouldn't mind a reset if they did something like that and made crafting less tedious. Sure it takes some skill to get a better result but it's not worth taking the time for such little reward.
Ahhh....I understnd where you are coming from. Before a few weeks ago this was a serious issue. I logged in tonight for the first time since November. The item search counter is used as you approach the market wards. Give it a try, quite effective. I really just don't like when the newer mmo players, that have been ruined by !'s and ?'s, bash on a game that doesn't have the !'s and ?'s.
I has defiinetly been a while since you logged in. The amount of monsters (on my server- Fabul) is great compared to players. A group could easily go to the beach in La Noscea and grind crabs and have a good time. Great spawn rate on those btw. I don't like that I still haven't found any actual dungeons(not large underground caves. but dungeons with beastmen. Places like Ghelsba Outpost from FFXI) Although, I have run into some skeletons. Yeah, I just played with the LFG function....it is kinda horrid.
Gamers bred from the likes of that one game from '04, will never understand we elders that enjoy the camp n' grind socialism and community style of gameplay.
^.^
To answer your question, i'd rather "grind" with an objective other than leveling. There is no content other than leveling besides crafting and i personally never really cared for that.
If you want oldschool with actual content then FFXI is right there and does every single thing better. This game is not oldschool, it's eye candy with no substance.
Except even that is not possible in FF14, which JOnesing will figure out when he has leveled past 20.

The condition of game speaks for itself. Old school is just another excuse for lack of content. When tanaka himself admitted the bad condition of FFXIV, trying tp put a spin on it by saying 'its old school' is not going to convince anyone. FFXI had some very nice quests and still gives you a very old school feeling.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
People need to stop telling me to play FF11 haha. I want to so bad!!! FF14 makes me want to start as a lvl 1 "anything" in FF11 and just level to my hearts content, knowing that I'll be playing with others and having fun.
The only thing keeping me in Eorzea is the fact that its free, but soon my hysteria will override even that fact.

1_ Real mess to learn how to create an account and a valid character slot. if you miss the booklet even your best friend Google can have problem to explain you.
2_ First in game, the only thing you say is : "How to..." how to kill a easy mob, how to craft, how to repair armor, how to take quest, how to learn a craft skill... Most action need explication but there are no explication...
3_ lag, many lag peak specially when many players together; i am not sure they can solves it
4_ And the most horrible thing i dislike is any action takes ages, all is slow : always cliking an option that lead to another windows with options. People think console interface. Just horrible. i don't even talk about changing weapon/tool or fight combat : take weapon out, take weapon in, very slow
Atm i spend 1hour fishing, then 1hour chopping, then 1hours mining then 1hours asking how to craft something (npc,materiel...), how to repair armor and learning how to replace questleves (wait the cooldown reset and old one are usless fulfilling your journal...)
Since Dragon's Lair on nes that rare i cry in front of my screen ^^

That why i say : Atm, that game is just for people who don't hate wasting time.
With less provocation, i would say, without all that slowness and heaviness of the interface, that game is good for Roleplaying and Crafting.
I haven't played FFXIV so forgive what may appear to be stupid questions about the game play.
When I played DAOC back in the day I did not partiular 'enjoy' camping mobs in a group. In fact, the game was pretty much designed to make it quite possible to solo a lot up to level 40, and then the leveling curve started to go up exponentially so that by level 45 you pretty much had to group camp.
This was done for a very good reason, it forced players together just before level 50 (level cap) so they got to know each other because very shortly they'd be proceeding into the endgame RVR content and fighting the evil other factions together as a realm wide team. So the camping had a purpose.
Add in other factors like increased experience rewards for setting up a camp, mainintaining it, moving on when the experience tailed away all factored in, along with the excellent opportuinity to socialize with your group mates due to mechanics such as forced downtime to recoop health, mana and the like.
Does FFXIV have these same things? If not, that might be why people don't feel its truely old school.

I capped a Druid in DAoC, solo. I then ran out of stuff to do because the RvR had nothing to do with level grind, wasnt relative to group and I had no interest in it. You walked out to the RvR, got sniped down by a ranger from what I remember and that was your RvR.
For FF14, the end game isnt defined yet. I'm not even close to end game yet, it isnt a factor but it does bring up a solid question. Are games about endgame? Does an MMO have to be about endgame or Character growth and how do you make a Character growth MMO remain fun and not become repeated grind mashing?
Add On: EvE Online is a character growth game. You need 30 years RT to 'cap' a char. This game doesnt hvae that credential. At the mechanical level, EvE is one of the simplest games out there. Go to test where the ISK and PvP are gone. You can create an Empire in a month. There is no PvP in FF14 and the class system is unbalanced beyond recognition. You dont see it because there is no PvP but it says they cant add it any time soon. That should be something this game looks at though as a future vision. How to make long term Character growth, PvE something to work on.
Second Add on: Arena PvP maybe. Gladiators vs Gladiators or Conjuror vs Conjuror. I still see this game being more PvE centric though. I still have no thoughts on how they would make it growth driven.. It has me thinking though.
Her question was not about endgame, it was about the game mechanics up to it.

ok im a great supporter of this game, im still logging in now, doing a few leves and logging out
but there is no point going out and killing stuff.. it doesnt let you get anywhere new, the only rewards are the ability to kill bigger stuff. i play primarily conjurer and the combat isnt particularly fun, no pace, its just a case of keep ing my buffs up, and using a couple of different attacks while healing every now and then.
THe game is a shell of potentially something very good imagine it as a software house developing an engine for a game and hten marketing it as a generic rpg engine it woudl do very well.
I like sandbox, i like sandbox a lot. But my sandbox fun runs out without a goal. In eve the gola is to do what oyu want ot do, be it corporate, be it a fighter pilot, be it owning a goodam big titan, you had a goal.. and many to choose from.
In FFXIV i can choose to kill stuff in different ways, or make different stuff. But no real goal. I cant veven get anything to ride yet. or visit many sites.
Sorry, I kept adding on. My condensed question is, maybe FF14 isnt about classical MMO endgame.
