Star Wars Galaxies vs Everquest 2!

stlouisarch1stlouisarch1 Member Posts: 90

I have SWG now, but no expansion packs.  I loved SWG for awhile untill i got mad about the economy, I felt that it shouldn't of been a Community Based Economy due to finding items is much of a hassle and people can charge a large amount of credits.  I liked exploring the planets and such but the combat to me felt wierd.  Though, CU has finnally been implemented into the game and 2expansions look promising along with the ability to LVL, but the reason why i liked Galaxies was because it was different from other MMORPG's.

I'm currently playing the Trial of the Isles on EQ2 and im loving it.  The graphics even with my 512mb ram, and my Nvidia 5600, it looks kinda nice.  I loved the widescreen effect, it makes the game look better in a way aswell! The combat to me kinda felt a little slugish but after playing for awhile i will get used to it.

Im gonna go get a graphic card : MSI NX6600-VTD256 Geforce 6600 256MB 128-bit DDR VIVO AGP 4X/8X Video Card -----------160 bucks

and

Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 333 (PC 2700) System Memory - OEM

I have a Nvidia 5600 card, and 512ram of system memory.  I think i should upgrade both and get only one of these games... Im going very strong to Everquest 2 right now.. How's the learning curve? Item Cost? is it community runned like in Galaxies? Will my upgrade card and RAM will be able to go on High Settings?

Thanks so much for reading all this, I would really appreciate all the help i can get!

If you liked the Isle of Refuge then you'll probably like EQ2 right up to level 20 at least. After that levelling becomes a painful slog, the armour quests will drive you potty if you don't have a guild to help you, and it can take ages to find a balanced group of experienced people to achieve any of the higher-level content.

In a good group, EQ2 is thrilling and addictive, and player skill rather than random button bashing can make a lot of difference, but if you're an avid solo gamer (as many of us Galaxies vets tend to be) you probably won't enjoy it.

As for exploration - forget it! The most disappointing thing about EQ2 for me was how tough it was to open up new zones. It takes normal players weeks to get access to the tier 3 zones and potentially will take you months before you'll see zek and the enchanted lands etc.

As for exploration, if you're done with the Commandlands and it's surrounding zones in less than a few months, then you're not exploring at all, you're just trying to chew through content. There are hundreds of quests to do in the Commandlands alone, and at least three dungeon zones to explore off of that. Same with Nektulos Forest.

Armor Quests are also not necessary. Not by a long shot. If you get stuck on one and it's driving you nuts, just skip it. It won't ruin you. You can buy stuff almost as good by the time you get that frustrated.

Levelling doesn't become painful after level 20. Not necessarily anyway. Some classes have it easy in the 20s, others don't. The reason the 20s are so much of a pain is that there are no flight paths in Nek or Thundering Steppes, so travelling becomes tedious, which makes questing tedious, since quests will take you everywhere.

I hope they add flight paths to these areas soon, because I almost quit twice going through Nektulos and TS, simply because of all the running that was required. If not for Varsoons and Nektropos Castle dungeons where you can spend hours killing constantly, I would have worn the feet right off my characters. I put in a suggestion. One can only hope they add flight paths and realize that dungeon design is the standard they need to use for outdoor zones. Put in shortcuts and links back to the beginning of the zones to take the tedious travel out of it. Discovery XP is enough to get people to run it all once. No need to make them run it 30 times.

EL and Zek are a LITTLE better done, slightly more compact. Plus I started LOVING my toon in my low 30s, so nothing seems like work anymore. It's a blast, with only a short 8-level punctuation of too much travel.

Which classes have it easier at leveling in the 20 range?

Classes that get picked up for groups easily have no problem grinding out the 20s in Varsoons, so you won't notice the travel issue as much. There are plenty of quests to do in Varsoons to keep you occupied in the meantime. Once you get to 27 you can solo entrance areas of Zek and EL well enough, and there is a really well developped quest base for those zones. You can also park in Runnyeye in your low 30s and not have to do much in EL or Zek if you want. I've explored a lot so it's taken me multiple weeks to go through 20s and 30s. 20s just seemed longer because so much of it was spent travelling rather than killing.

So healers and tanks have it easier because they're more likely to get dungeon groups where xp comes faster and more steadily. On my server the perception of Necro damage in the 20s prevented me from getting groups easily. Not that I wanted them!! HAH! Of course that perception was based in reality because Necro damage sucks till the low 30s anyway hehe.

    Get EQ2.

Soloing sucks once you hit 14 and then its grinding quest/mobs/etc.

Grouping in EQ2 is awesome, get into a guild pronto. Once you done this, you will have a blast. Its nothing like having 24 people in a raid, nothing.

Star Wars Galaxies sucks a big one.

No you will not be running EQ2 on high settings. [nobody does really except for still screenshots] However I'd say you'll be able to run balanced [medium] with minimal problems except for when you're in town you might get a little video lag. During raids you'll have to tune down to (n64-ish graphics) but till then you'll be fine.

I play both, the problem being, which one. Consider upgrading to Station Access and go with both. Ok, SWG CU has made it a bit closer to EQ, but they are still pretty different beasts to make them both worth the while. It's a mood thing.

There will be times when things arn't going right, and it seems it's the worst game on earth. But, there will be times when you'll feel like going to a convention dressed as your avatar.

    SOE ain't all bad.
