Hi, I'm considering getting into this game, and I would like to know how is it's gameplay. Is it quest based, just grinding or what?. I'll download the trial as soon as i get home, but i would like some advice from people who are playing already.
You start with currently four skill trees which will split into many different areas as you level them, you can level all of them all the way if you wanted but it would take years. I think there are currently 11,000 or so levels ingame someone calculated, with many more skill areas planned.
There are missions and encyclopedia quests, although there arnt many encyc quests at the moment there are several hundred in the queue to be tested and get ingame. There is a lot of leveling to be done is several different areas depending how you want to play. There are also fantastic events run reguarly (several a week as I understand it) and not forgetting invasions
It is well worth trying the 2 week trial, although dont be surprised by the newbie land player numbers, 4 newbie islands with a small % of the game pop in makes only a handful at a time, but you wont stay there long, get to the mainland when you are confident you know what you are doing and are around lvl 20-30 in a skill or two.
the gameplay experience is somewhat unique in ryzom as it feels more like having a real living character once you get into it, the key tho lies in actually playing it like a real character, that means interacting with people and taking your time, not just rushing to the mainland, getting into a guild, powerleveling to 250 in a month and then proclaiming it's boring

I must agree, the most fun I have is when we get a group tgether and just run around exploring. We kill stuff and pick up 2 or 3 levels in the process, have great fun, see awesome things, and hopefully do not get killed.
The game dynamics change with the time of day, weather, and season, and everycombination of the above. The animals act differently, etc. Be careful once at the mainland, some animals let their friends know if you are beating up on them .
When I first started ryzom I remember the UI seeming like a big mess. It took me a while to figure out what all the boxes on the screen where and to rearrange them into something I was comfortable with (plus switch from the default arrow keys to wasd for movement). Which although difficult at first proved possible with the flexiblity of ryzoms UI.
A little note when offered starting packs in ryzom do *not* pick three melee fight packs. It costs nothing to get started in melee which is not true for the other basic skill categories in ryzom (magic, crafting and harvesting).
"Just grinding or what?"
Yup just grinding! However, that does not mean I didnt have alot of fun early on before I figured this out. The skill system initially really does give the impression that you are free to mix and match skills without regard to class.
The players playing in ryzom provide the only distraction from the grind and I dont want to let it go understated how incredible these players are. Without the group of people that has built up around this game there would be much less to enjoy. As xenofur and marct both said (well minus the part about grinding).

There are quests, called Rites, the rewards from these give rewards such as increased hp and new craft plans. Currently tho there are not enough of these rites to do all the time, the are thousands of different missions given by hundreds of different NPC`s, but the main gameplay is about getting lvl`s by gaining xp from craft forrage melee and magic. Its a very open system, allowing you to do what you want when you want.
Exploring in the game will take several months and is so rewarding that you may by then stay forever just because of all the people you will meet.
You most likely will want to run around alone for days jsut seeing all the sights and all of the lands, nad your drive to grow stronger might just be so that you can do all of that with even greater ease

Plus outposts are coming. Sometime.
