Why Is It...I love Star Trek...I love MMOs...but dislike this game?

MMOPlayaMMOPlaya Member UncommonPosts: 103

Perhaps it's just sheer disappointment, but I...JUST....CANNOT....GET....INTO....THIS....GAME?  I purchased this title, intentionally waiting about a year, allowing Cryptic time to smooth things out and give it some more polish.  I create an account last night, install the software, and then I log in for an hour.  I'm ready to hit the cancel button.

I'm a huge fan of Star Trek, and have been for about 30 years.  I'm also a huge fan of MMORPG's, and have been playing them for approx 6 years.  I won't bore you with a list of games I've played, but suffice it to say I've tried all of the AAA titles and some of the smaller, lesser known titles.  I am very familiar with MMO mechanics and gameplay, and thoroughly enjoy the living, breathing, virtual world that they provide.

However, STO I just don't feel comfortable with.  It seems very clunky, yet at the same time, way over-complicated.  From the minute you are thrust into the game, you barely feel comfortable with what's going on and how to do basic things.  I really dislike the interaction system between you and the NPC's.   In some ways, I feel that Interplay's (remember them?) Star Trek 25th Anniversary PC game runs better...and that game ran on DOS and is about 20 years old!  The interiors of the Starbase, hell even the interiors of your own ship seem WAY disproportionate to your character.  And the loading screens...really?  We are in the 2nd coming of the MMORPG genre, as far as advancing gaming technology, and we can't get seamless gameplay on a AAA IP such as Star Trek...a futuristic game?

I also think that the way the "crews" work is simply, wrong.  The fact that the system treats crew like loot, you don't feel any real attachment to them.  And if I'm already a Science Officer, why the hell do I need another senior Science Officer?  I'm the Science Officer, dammit!

The UI is overly-complicated and too busy.  It takes some traditional MMO aspects, and then confuses them.  The space combat UI is the worst I think.  And I HATE the space combat.  BORING!  I want to be on the bridge of my ship and fight that way...shouting commands to my crew (by way of mashing buttons I guess), but I want to watch the battle through my viewscreen and respond to reports from my crew...just like you see on the show.  Instead, we get a tactical display, which completely removes the TREK from the game as far as I'm concerned.  I do however, enjoy the LOOK of space, and think Crypic did a good job making it look cool.

If there is someone out there that wants to take me under their wing and convert me to drink the STO Kool-Aid, and explains to me that this game is worth my time and effort, I'm all Vulcan ears.  I have 29 days left on my sub.

I won't flame you or try and convert you into liking STO, but just say I don't think this is your type of game period.  Best you pass this one up and look for another game that fits your play style better.  :)  I personally like STO and in particular the bridge crew aspect so to each their own.  Good Luck in your search though!

Got a few friends who are playing it from the first day till now, they love it. I dint like it at all and stoped playing after the first month.

duno how long you played but never judge a game after only a few hours. if you played more adn seen actual gameplay and stuff and dont feel you like it, move on to a new game. simple as that.

also I would not make post like that on mmorpg.com, sto has a fine comunity more then willing to help and plenty of "guilds" to join.

STO is not Star Trek.  STO is an absolutely terrible MMORPG.  That's probably why you dislike this game.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

While I agree . I would add the caveat that it's a bit of a stretch of the imagination to classify it as a MMORPG. Cryptic has become the Mo-ped of game makers . They're fun to play for a while , but you don't want your freinds to find you playing it. It like a Mo-ped leaves you craving more .

OP this is the wrong place to post to reach out for help in STO, or in getting "kool-aid" to why you should continue playing.  I suggest you post the same post on the STO forums, if you really want some sort of positive feedback.

*Disclaimer for all the flamers out there, who look for anything to show how superior they are, I despise STO.

Well, everyone has their own ideas on what constitutes a Star Trek game, but.. in this case, i'd say your spot on.  There probably is hope for the future though, as Cryptic are moving more into the F2P market, given that STO already has a cash shop, it wouldnt be much of a stretch of the imagination to see this one going the same way in the next 2 or maybe 3 months. Champions Online, their other game is doing that apparently, and their next title Neverwinter is going to be a F2P microtransaction driven game too.. might well make their games more popular.. though that might be stretching the imagination a bit too image

I knew when I was typing that in that I shouldn[object Window]t call it an MMORPG.  So, STO is an absolutely terrible game.  I even hesitate to call it a game...

Question:  Why would going F2P give hope for the future of STO?  I guess it gives hope to those who do like STO but to those who don[object Window]t like it, won[object Window]t like it even after it[object Window]s F2P.

Just to chime in a bit on some of what the OP is saying, imo STO is one of the worst ST PC games to come out over the years, terrible MMO, terrible game, period.

The fact that you don't like STO, especially being a ST fan, only makes you part of the majority that have ever played STO.

Thus the population crash and the fact that you can buy STO for $2.50.

    Hi,

    >Perhaps it's just sheer disappointment, but I...JUST....CANNOT....GET....INTO....THIS....GAME?

I think what everyone expected, ok not everyone, get more or even real ST universe. That means really large heap of great dynamic content and behaviour(s) from the game.  Sadly  Cryptic means differently - company think what doing that 5 times and doing this more 5 times is pretty neat and cool. I presume that this kind of action exhausts itself pretty quickly.

The game just isn't that great is all. That's why.

I won't say it's as unremittingly bad as some here do, but it's certainly a "mediocre" MMO, and for us Star Trek fans (30+ years now myself as well), that's hugely disappointing.

I've always been suspicious of Cryptic and their game designs since CoX. Then Cryptic came out and claimed they were new, ( warning sirens sounding ) with a new engine and new concepts, genesis etc... Then they released CO , wow were they lying , pretty well about everything. The engine was a rehash of CoX, the gameplay was exactly the same , the stories linear and frankly boring. A company that claimed they were producers of AAA MMO's , this fell far short. The only real difference between CoX and CO were graphics.

To make a long story short , all the issues that exsisted in CO , carried over to STO and then some . CO was one faction game that was light on content , STO was a two faction game that was even lighter on content.  It basically boiled down to Cryptics philosophy, they have a half-assed one, when it comes to game production. They've decided they'll generate huge hype for a game , reap the profits , and fix the problems later. The real problem is that 1 ) they use an engine that is basically dated.  2) The devs are not very imaginitive , linear story lines , use of only the most basic mechanics. 3 ) insistence of using the same engine to make all games fit into the parameters of that engines proformance.  4 ) Genesis was basically the story mission generator that was in CoX just upgraded and slightly more flexible in the environments. Everything about Cryptic and that underpins their games , screams cheap.

Cryptic is like a used car salesman of the Multi-player gaming world ( notice I didn't say MMO's , because they really are incapable of producing one ) . They just ooze sleezy , and after dealling with them people get an uneasy feeling from being around them . After a while like all crooked used car salesman  , they fade away or re-appear somewhere else scamming new people. I for one will not give this used car salesman anything more to survive on and will warn people off.

You love STO.  You want to play it as you read this.  Cryptic is not a money grubbing shallow soulless development troop.  They really care about making good games.  Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the laugh , I just about pissed myself.  Another irksome issue with Cryptic is the mea culpa attitude that turns into excuses and begging for more time and patients. Exhibit A : http://forums.startrekonline.com/showpost.php?p=3266091&postcount=107
