Do you prefer Vanilla WoW over Current WoW?

If your answer is yes, then Rift may just be the game for you.  Of course, its not quite as simple as that but that is a good starting point.  Let’s take a look at what Rift offers over Blizzard‘s behemoth!

    That's a fairly accurate statement.

considering the level of polish already in the game in its current state and the server stability thus far (yes there are 1-2 little problems but not many, and they should be ironed out by release) I doubt that the start up will be messy.

Sure ... FF14 looked very nice too... until it was out.

Yeah, my favourite bit of Vanilla WoW was the bit where they advertised a class a Shapeshifting class then designed endgame so that you could literally never shapeshift. That was awesome.

    Rift does look good though...

I hope you're joking. Rift is nothing like Vanilla WoW which actually had some difficulty and epic 40 player raids!

Unless you mean the thrill of starting a new MMO and the feeling that comes from being a noob with so much to see and explore.

I am telling you.  I bought FF14 and I would not want you to waste your money again.  Rift is NOT FF14.

It is also not a RvR sandbox game.

The OP statement is pretty spot on.  Rift will have a better launch, than Blizzard did with WoW for sure.  This is Trion's first game and it is a good one.  So far up to level 20 Beta content is better than any MMO game at launch.  It's that damn solid.

Rift is a quest hub hand holding game with a decent class system.  Rifts are WAR's public quest.   The only real hook is it is going to be "new".

Your game play is to pick up "!"  quest go to the highlighted part of the map kill crap,  mindelessly run around from place to place, doing some publics quest mixed in till max level.  Then you will jump to raid content and if you pvp queue for some flag running, king of the hill, control bases.  Sounds familiar to anyone?

Will the game suck probably not but there is nothing special about this game and in my opinion one with very sub par graphics and they are using the same graphics engine as WAR and we know who well that worked for Mythic in what they could not do to fix there game when it started to crash and burn.  And yes Mythic is mostly to blame but the game engine did not help when they started to freak out and try to fix things.

I have played this same type of game for the last 10 years and really have no interest in playing a "new" verision of it.  If I wanted this type of game I will play the one that has proven over 6 years they do it better than anyone else.

I'm going to buy it. I've been beta testing it and even though its very similar to other MMOs on the market, it does most of it better. Plus the game feels fresh. The RIFT system is a step up from WARS PQs.

    So yes I prefer Vanilla

I do not perfer vanilla WoW over Cata. Because to me, Cata is basically "Vanilla extract"

I just wanted to say that for all those throwing a hissy fit because quests are clearly marked (arrows and what not to show you where to go etc), this feature can be disabled in the interface as well through the questtracker (one by one).

Now you can stop using this argument to bash on the game, and focus on some real issues.

Vanilla WoW was awesome! Actual real MMo with difficult PvE and grouping required. Cata is nothing more than a braindead easy mode PvE with no thought required. Cata WoW is nothing more now than a dungeon running gear grind and that is all. Was in the RIFT beta and it is hand holding easy mode crapfest. I still play Cata though simply because there is nothing else to play. When will we get a real MMO with quest difficulty and challenge like there used to be. Thanks a lot Blizzard for ruining the MMO industry.

Nope.  Matter of fact, I can't think of a single way that I preferred vanilla WoW over Cat.

Blizzard should make a Vanilla server. I remember how much fun it used to be until they started releasing expansion packs.

  • MurashuMurashu Member UncommonPosts: 1,386

It depends on the timeline. PvP was exciting and fun back in Vanilla (pre-BG). Back then you had to actually kill someone to gain honor, not just hop into an instance and go AFK. I do like how they made grouping more rewarding compared to Vanilla. Back when the game first launched it was rare to find a group of people willing to run a few dungeons back to back. Now you can logon anytime 24/7 and usually find a group right away.

Ha, I never liked WoW in any of it's phases.  The only reason I even played it periodically over the last 4 years was because I had friends and family who played the game.  Outside of that; I thought the game was a total bore.  Raiding was about as exciting as driving in 5 O'Clock traffic on a Friday and doing 5 Man Heroics with the new dungeon tool is the reason I started my meth addiction.  The game is full of narcissists, the worst I've seen in any MMORPG I've played.

I prefer a vanilla milkshake or any WoW. I will take Rift over a vanilla milkshake though. Also, like Wardog said above me, I've pretty much only played on and off because of friends and family who play.

I by far, will always love classic over the abomination it became long ago.

PvP was balanced and didn't require resilience to win.

There were far less stupid people to group with end-game; I'd say about 80% less.

There were no heroic dungeons back then, or the points associated.

Epic-quality gear really was quite epic. If you were in full purples, it was an achievement. Even if you were in full blues, that was still something.

NO FLYING MOUNTS. Player controlled flying mounts, I feel, only take away from the game and make it much smaller.

The Paladin and Warlock level 60 mount quests was an extreme accomplishment. Speaking of mounts, you actually had to work for it. Now, just by leveling up, you are given all the money you need.

We had quests to help us level, but even at level 58, you may start to run out, so grinding mobs the old fashioned way was required.

The game was just more challenging back then, without being too difficult. Then Blizzard joined with Activision, and Kotick said, "Blizzard, I like what you're doing, really, but the game is just far too hard. We have an entire casual, bottom-feeder market that we haven't even begun to tap into! I know you've dumbed the MMO genre down quite a bit already by making this, but let's go even further. While we're at it, let's increase the grind by 220%."

     Lies

    Not a lie actually.

I played WoW since beta and left after vanilla was pretty much going the way of the dinosaur. I also have been playing Rift and so far the ammount of hand holding and make it "easy" elements present in Rift are more akin to the changes they made post Vanilla.

There are literally no choices and consequences present in Rift so far. You have 4 different roles you can play without really losing out. You can just swap on the fly. The map literally holds your hands and tells you where to go at all times. Even dungones do not reset the boss hp.

Say your party magically wipes (which shouldnt really happen considering even a rogue can TANK in rift), that party can just run back to the Boss and the damage they did before will still be there. This means there is no real penalty for dying at a boss. In fact, many might intentionally die just to widdle down the boss hp. Good luck seeing anything close to that in Vanilla WoW.

Rift is a joke compared to Vanilla. This isnt saying you cannot enjoy Rift but for sake of all things good, stop pretending Rift is something IT ISNT.

Because the OP asks people to read a link that compares WOW to Rift and makes the case that players who miss WOW's "glory days" might really enjoy Rift.

Sometimes it pays to actually read these forums before replying.

It does sound like Rift will be a good game for players looking for a "better" (or at least newer) WOW.

For those looking for different, I don't think this is going to fill the bill.
