Looking for MMO that isn't focused on raiding/pvp endgame

ExploriumExplorium Member Posts: 395

Looking for an MMO not focused on raiding/pvp endgame.

Well, let me go into more detail.

I like Ryzom and Ultima Online and SWG...from my memory...it wasn't about "I have uber leet sword of doom"...and grinding the same dungeon over and over and over. It was just about going out and having fun, maybe grinding mobs or roleplaying or exploring...I never remember worrying about getting leet items.

Ryzom is okay, but I just didn't feel it...I did like how it was heavy craft based, but it just didn't click. I loved the world, graphics, community, not sure why I couldn't get into it

SWG is gone (well, the SWG I liked)

And UO...well guess I could try playing UO again.

I also tried Fallen Earth...crafting is useless though, I tried selling an item to someone and he said exact words, "Lol, I can get it cheaper on the merchant"...I logged out after realizing everything you could buy off merchants (at least in the first "zone). That, and factions didn't seem to mean much.

I LOVE crafting. I LOVE building and/or having a house. A game like Haven and Hearth is great, but controls make it unplayable for me, click somewhere and get stuck...and then stuck again, and its really really really laggy.

I LOVE exploring...exploring and crafting are my two favorite things to do in a game/MMO. I don't want my crafted items to suck compared to quest/raid items...thats lame.

I prefer PvE and PvP

Is there any MMO that offers that? Or am I out of luck? Everything seems raid focused.

2nd life or the sims ...

You could give a tale in the desert a try

Graphics aren't great but it does excel at the crafting bit, exploring is good to, theres actually a reason to in some cases.  You can make your "house" as big as you want.

    www.atitd.com

Your house is more of a factory though then an actual house.  But it's completely sandbox if thats your thing.

THe only other problem is, last time i checked there wasn't really any fighting, there was a mini-game but that doesn't really count as PvP/PvE

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

...yeah...no...I'm guessing you are just a troll though (the first reply) that can't understand no raiding and just trolling my thread. I hate those two games..2nd life...sims...two of my least favorite games ever. They aren't even MMOs really.

Something like UO, Haven and Hearth, old SWG, or maybe even Ryzom. Something along those lines, doesn't need to be an exact replica. Something thats an RPG, lets you explore, build, fight things (you cant fight things in 2nd life/sims as far as I'm aware, don't care to find out)...sci-fi/medieval/fantasy/historical

UO-Crafting armor/weapons/food and stuff was nice. Loved exploring dungeons

Haven and Hearth -The whole premise of the game was great. Go out exploring, find a nice location and build a village with friends or by yourself, fend off other people that may come by...bad graphics and even worse controls

Old SWG-Loved it all, outside the bugs/lag

Ryzom-Crafting is good...I didn't feel like exploring was that great though. I didn't really remember finding cool stuff while exploring

    Any games like those?

how about wow? lmao im jokeing ..id say try vanguard..it still looks great and seems to be a small pop increase within the last month or so...**i still wish they would make it f2p** but oh well..but most mmo's are comeing to their ends and all are basicly  sitting in a town or chat screaming for raids / endgame events..you may just be better off waiting for the new string of mmo's that will be comeing out soon...thats what im doing at least lol

I forgot about this one. I think my only problem was, that it had resets? So after you worked really hard, the game reset and you started over...that isn't really persistent, and if I work on something for 6 months or a year to have it erased is kinda game breaking...does it still reset? Other than that, this is along the games I'm looking for.

As for Vanguard, I'm on the trial, but I guess endgame is all about raiding...crafting loses its usefulness as quest/raid items are better.

I've been playing LotRO off and an for over six months now. While I can't speak for the community, I've never once been bothered with elite gear or instances. I'm no where near the endgame, but travelling through the middle is tons of fun and I'm in no hurry to get out. A lot of exploring is to be had, and it's great if you like the Tolkien world. It's all down to personal preferance but I enjoy the crafting system, but I don't do crafting to make myself money or sell things to people, I do it to be self sufficient. Right now I have my main character who collects ore and wood and crafts clothing, and am going to make my next couple toons fill the other roles I need to be able to make my own weapons/foods etc. For me it's pretty deep and involving, but it all depends on how far you're willing to go. I'm a solo player as of now because my connection isn't well enough to group, and I've had no trouble getting things done, if you're into grouping though I do see a lot of chatter in the Looking For Fellowship channel.

As I said before I'm not seeing a race to the endgame, but that could be because I'm not focusing on it. Maybe it could be said for all games, but I'm not too worried about getting there myself, and I don't see a rush for me to be there either. Plenty to do at my current level with questing, crafting, deeds, tasks and the instanced Skirmishes that are no problem to do solo. I am looking forward to when I can jump in and group up to run the Great Burrow though. And hey, it's a quality MMO that's also free so it probably won't hurt to try it.

I'll also add that if you do want to get good gear without loot hunting I find the auction house always has good things for sell and a lot of it is crafted, so you can always list your crafted items there. Also you can purchase some nice equipment with the Skirmish Marks you get for completing Skirmishes.

A Tale in the Desert resets about every two years.  That might sound bad, but from the inside, it's really not often enough.  By the time the game does reset, the overwhelming majority of the playerbase is like, hurry up and reset it so we can start over.  The exceptions are mostly people who joined very late (e.g., a month before the rest) and are still new to the game.  Explaining why players want a reset is, well, complicated.  Just like a lot of other things in the game, actually.

I found a RPG that is what I'm looking for. Well not a RPG like you typically find. Its more like Haven and Hearth, except the graphics are more rogue-like, though it has digitized graphics of people on some of the screens, which is kinda different. Only thing I'm not sure I like is the movement and payment system...but its not as bad as Haven and Hearth movement. Its a bit weird and definitely this is a niche game...but if you like Haven and Hearth, you would probably like this...same kind of gameplay and graphics are sort of similar, though I find this gameplay is better. Its  a singleplayer game sadly, though...but heh

    thats the link to it.

The pricing is weird...pay for the current version for cheap, or pay for every major version that comes out, or pay a really expensive price of 55 dollars to have the game forever...which is weird, cause the first two prices make much more sense, but the expensive one is just way out there.

Have you tried City of Heroes? I absolutely loved that game. It was the first game to take me away from WoW when I got hooked on it for a few years.

It has excellent group play. The leveling experience is pretty much the game because as I remember it as soon as you got to max level there was really very little to do outside of accolades (titles/boons). That's why I stopped playing, because I need an endgame, but if you don't need one, then this might be for you.

Game is definitely for people with alt-itis.

I'm not really sure what the new expansion offered. I think high end chars are still upset by nothing to do but supposedly there's a patch recently released or being released very soon that will address some endgame issues. Hopefully someone else can fill in.

Many people that liked these games are now playing Darkfall.

Thats if you like UO pre Trammel. Mentiong post Trammie UO in Darkfall is like mentioning WoW.

There are no PvE raids in Darkfall. Only a couple high end mobs that need PvE raids and they are not really worth it as you can make much more money solo.

Just give it a try is all I'm saying. Go past their forums. DL the game. Play the 14 day trial. Ragequit long before its over.  Now you can visit the forums and post all day long why this game is crap.

Or dl the trial. play the 14 day trial. Join a clan. Have so much fun you don't even remember to log in the forums. Also you forget there are other MMOs out there. You can never go back to them. Nothing can compare to Darkfall.

Since the free trade and wilderness is coming back I suggest you to try Runescape. The game is not purely combat oriented as almost all of the others on the market, there are a huge amount of things to do when you don't feel like fighting. I played the game for months without even wielding a weapon. There is a huge open world, player housing, dozens of skills to train, no set classes, its a sandbox game with lots of activities. You liked UO and Haven and Hearth so I guess the graphic won't be a problem for you, Runescape has much better graphics than these games and its 3D.

People like to call RS a kids' game, but most of the high level players are adults. Its the most fun game I've ever played and I tried a lot of games.

I may give RS a go again after the changes, but I remember it being nothing but a grindfest. I love the fact that you can level so many different things, but cutting a bazillion trees to get a cape just seemed horrible to me. What were some of the things you did to make it fun and interesting for you?

There are minigames for a lot of skills now to help leveling without grinding. I liked the thieving minigame, there is one for runecrafting, woodcutting, hunting and of course combat, I don't remember all. My favourite minigame was trouble brewing, I really loved the gameplay and the rewards. The trick is that don't play the game simply to level up, there are so many things to do, find the activities you really enjoy.

I recommend Mortal Online:  While it certainly has open world PvP, the crafting system is fairly complex, you can own and build your own house, there is much exploring to do as well as politics galore.

PvE is actually the weakest park of Mortal Online.  The game has a lot of bugs and is still a work in progress but the world looks amazing and is quite fun.  The dev's all played Ultima Online in it's heyday and many aspects resemble Ultima Online.

The game has Stealing, Fishing, tons of crafting skills, taming, animal control, the list goes on and on, you can even build keeps and little villages.  Full loot PvP.

It's a great game, with tons of potential down the road.

There are lots of games you can play. Just ignore the endgame.

Personally, I enjoy playing DDO and City of Heroes.

DDO is active at all levels of play. Hit level cap and just TR back to level 1, or run Epic content ( mostly single group. ) Raiding does exist, but only consists of two groups and can be readily avoided. You have several payment options, including standard subscription, content purchases (premium), and free. Personally I prefer the one-time purchase of content, that way the game is always there when I want it without having to worry about subscription.  If you go with the subscription option, you get a monthly allowance of TP as part of your subscription.

DDO can be played for free all the way through, but requires an incredible amount of grinding if you go this route. What I would recommend is taking the free trial, and playing up to level 5. If you like it, a single purchase of 4.99 in points will permanently move you to premium status, unlocking certain account options and giving you sufficient TP to purchase a couple of low level modules.

While the game is F2P, the cash shop is not at all required, and the equipment sold within is generally sub-par, used only by new players that have not obtained real gear. You can avoid it entirely except for content purchases, account options. I believe the only purchase I've ever made that was not content related was a huge collection bag, which is just a storage container.

City of Heroes has active grouping at all levels, very few raids, and nothing worthwhile that cannot be obtained solo if you really want to grind for it. (grouping is MUCH better xp and Taskforce's offer MUCH higher drop rates, but nearly anything can be obtained solo with sufficient time.)

One of the popular features for COH is the huge diversity in characters. Due to this, most people play alts, a lot of alts. It is the only way to truly experience all the different play styles the game offers.

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

    Have you tried Fallen Earth?

If you like post-apocalyptic themes you should give it a go.

Right now the endgame is pvp centric but they are adding content for a lot of other choices.

This game is really amazing.  It's themepark/sandbox mix.  The closest to a real sandbox game I've seen in years.

You can also get it really cheap on steam with a mount to start with!

you seem to want a game that focuses on pve and crafting. i would try vanguard and daoc. yes i say daoc. crafting is very important in the game and very diverse and supported with a good consignment system where you can put your wares up for sale. the population is small but there is only one server. there is plenty of pve even in this game thats very PvP oriented.

you could also try wurm or istaria (istaria has no PVP at all tho, afaik)

Its not complete yet, but keep an eye on xsyon, once finished it'll be a 3d haven and hearth pretty much, just with alot more in depth crafting
