Yet another closed beta to which I never got an invite to play. When the beta keys got to the public, there were so few that they disappeared instantly. I pre-ordered but never got in, like many others.
In the past, I've refused to play games that I couldn't try first. However, I don't want to be one of the 'left behind' that can't find a group to save their lives when everyone else is at max level. Open beta, or unlimited key closed beta, has become an industry tactic to expose players to the game, whet their appetite, and get more players to buy. LOTRO did it as did Star Trek Online and both games had successful openings.
Also, like many others, SOE has failed me before. I played SWG until I couldn't take it anymore and PotBS just wasn't my style. Right now, I hover on the cancel button half afraid to continue. Most reviews are old, pre-beta previews and the best gameplay videos I could find are on YouTube.

But yeah I agree 100% with you.

You ALWAYS cancel pre-order...
So my question: Why didn't you pre-order?

You realise you can get a refund for pre-orders right? And you dont need to pay for the whole game I believe gamestops minimum deposit is 5 dollars. Which you can get back. At any time.
I also think servers get wiped come release so... People will be starting over at level 1.
And then they never let people hit the level cap anyways.
Honestly I dont mind when people bash a game I only mind when they start making shit up from out of their ass.
Personally Im still on the edge of wether or not to pre-order this game I was in the beta and I thought it was fun however the starting zone had pretty much 0 people in it so I have no clue as to wether or not it was instanced or if there were no people there because everyone had already hit the cap.
Beta use to be Beta before the asian-lineage2clones-thatwillbe-f2p-anyways came and used "Beta" as gathering new players. And I totally agree that I wanna try it before I buy it. At the amount of crap mmo comming out passed years I wouldnt waste a penny. They should owe me money for playing their crap game for 1 hour until uninstall.
The only surprise so far was Rift. And that was one mmo out of the 50 i tried last year... 1....
And I didnt get no invite to DC universe either, even tho I played Coh and the others they made.
EVen if you pre-ordered (at least in the past few weeks or more) you didnt get in, they just flat out ignored giving all those people keys that they said they would (they even made you send in a pic of your pre order) so dont feel too bad, many people got shafted by this game, and they didnt even have the balls to say sorry...or anything for that matter.
from what ive seen and the bit i played, its a game in "i think im a single player console game..but i wanna be an MMO" limbo. Its very simple and not a whole lot of depth, people will play it for a month to 3 months and be done. The PVP is decent but not enough to make people pay 15$ a month. There are better super hero MMOs out there, with more content, better customization/gameplay ect.
This game wont last too long, i can almost garuntee you.
I pre-ordered back in October... nothing. Only reason I got in was because of Fileplanet.
First off, beta is for stress testing and bug finding...not "try before you buy"...period.
Now to the fiasco that is SOE.
I pre ordered way back in October from my local Game Stop as well. When they opened the beta to pre orders I went online and filled out their form and waited patiently....Nothing.
After the November deadline passed and no key I sent in a support ticket. I recieved the typical form letter response and then went round and round and had to threaten with posting on every board I could find to finally get them to send one. I remember there was a cut off date for the pr order/beta offer, but can't tell you when it was. So if you tried to pre order the last week or two before the end of beta, you were probably way past that date.
The "game" that is DCUO...
I have posted here what my likes and dislikes were on other threads here...They didn't change in the entire time of beta. In fact, that is kind of the point. Very little was fixed that the beta testers (remember those guys who are stress testing and finding bugs, not "trying before they are buying" guys?) reported as flaws in the game.
CC still has too little customization for the character. No sliders (we were told it wouldn't happen period!), too few options for costume and hair/facial hair. And too few power sets, only 6, that stick you in a roll whether that was what you wanted to do. i.e If you pick "Fire" powers set you will be a tank, or a healer....despite what your idea for your character is and what you like to play. Can't play the controller role or the DPS....Not to mention that the vast majority are really unbalanced. The most vocal and longest threads on the beta forum were how the CC needed work and their were too few and restrictive power sets. There was no per physical power set, electric, energy, light (claim it will be in an expansion), dark ect. ect. Can't change the color of you powers at all. Only 3 color pallet for costumes...
Only 6 power slots on the hot bar and we could NEVER get them to confirm or deny that you only get 6 character slots....An early video stated that, but we could not get them to verify at all.
Chat still hard to use and v-chat is pretty broken.
Missions are pretty repetive. If you have a favorite mentor, you will be running the same quests over and over for every character with that mentor. Alot of the quests are exact mirrors from the hero/villian side. Same stuff to beat up, same stuff to collect ect. ect. Get boring fast.
The UI is really built for the PS3 and it sux either way....
I canceled my preorder the other day which saddened me very much, but this game stinks in it's current form. I will check back with it in 6-12 months
So what the OP and about a dozen people above me are saying is that they are unhappy that there was a limited amount of keys and amongst all the hundreds of us in beta, you weren't invited. I'm sorry, that sucks. (the not being invited part)
All these other people trying to spread the hater-ade complaining that game companies should give us the opportunity to Beta a game to see if we like it need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid. This entire try before you buy MMO concept is new and absolutely sucks. Well not really as it lets you test something in beta to see if you like the general feel. But there is ZERO gurantee that you'll like the game and that the developers won't do something drastic between beta and live.
You guys will get your free trial in like 6 months. I wouldn't hold my breath on Rift having a free trial for like 6 months either unless it totally bombs.
Until then, people who had keys will most likely be deep into some serious hero v. villain PvP :-P
at least in rift if you pre- order, you do actually get into the beta, instead of not getting in and them flat out ignoring it and not even saying sorry for not doing it....not a damn word.
Aside from that, the guy above you is right in almost every way.
HAH .. you actually kinda read my mind.. im mulling between Rift and a LOTRO return right now .. pretty sure i will be stopping at gamestop tomorrow to cancel my preorder since i didnt get a beta key...
Maybe if enough people do it they will learn something.. doubt it tho.. and have no idea how many will just suck it up and keep the preorder.
Maybe, if read other posts, you would stop before sticking your foot in your mouth. Pre-orders did NOT get a key...smart guy.
I only mind when people start making shit up from out of their ass too.
You can find out about a game through its reviews and videos. Just because you didnt get to play the beta doesnt mean the information isnt available to you. DCUO has a ton of video of their gameplay, and i mean a ton.
Yes i know that playing the game is different, thats besides the point.

Every pre-order came with the opt-in to do the beta. They didnt just give a beta key with the pre-order, you had to go sign up for it with your receipt or something. I got the beta from another means (signed up months ago).

Ahh...but that's what they SHOULD do. Other companies realize this and thus start with a large customer base. See World of Tanks.
...and this is why. "No try before you buy" = "reading reviews before you buy" = you guessed it.
If you dont like "reviews" how about "previews"?
Ive personally read at least 15 different articles about the game and i know there are several more that i didnt read into.
There is so much information about this game out there.
You talk about not buying a game blindly but apparently you cant see for yourself.

i recall a moment in time where SOE said... If you have yet to get your beta key and pre ordered before october 15th please resubmit proof of pre order.
i did.
so i got into beta.
Plus the ridiculous amount of beta keys sites were handing out.
its your own fault you didnt get in.
Ridiculous that there weren't more keys. They were gone fast. Tell me a site that still had them. I tried them all. Some people actually go to work and can't wait for sites to post them during the day.
I didn't pre-order prior to October 15th.
I guess that eliminates fault. Who's fault is it then? Maybe we can blame it on you.
Not to mention for some absurd reason sites were still handing out keys on 1/4 when people that were PROMISED keys for pre-ordering didn't get any.
I don't know where you're getting these promises from. SOE made 2 definite notions, you would get in by november 30th if your preorder was sent before the 15th, and the second was ALL PS Network subscribers would get in the beta free.
I know for a fact that doing those things would get you in. Even after people complained that they didn't get their keys on the 30th, SOE put out a notice stating to contact them and have them resubmit. At any point you could have called them regarding the preorder and they would tell you whether it was received, pending or what have you.
Complaining keys didn't go out a day or so before they shut the beta down is kind of ridiculous. You would have gotten to play for what, 24 - 48 hours straight if you were lucky? Not to mention with the end of beta event, many players were lagging and crashing with server populations maxxing and players being in on area all at the same time.
Those looking to play the game before they buy will likely have a chance in 3 to 6 months if they get a trial going. Had people not hung their hopes out there at the last minute it may not have been an issue as much.
I understand the disappointment, I just think its being blown way out of proportion.
Using a beta as a trial for a game is kind of risky really. The whole point of a beta is to flesh out the game fully before releasing to the public using a typical play base. Drastic changes can and often do get implemented late in beta or even between beta and release. Just look at what CO did, that changed the game dramatically.
Personally I’m starting to think big open betas do companies more harm than good. It’s probably better to keep a smaller group of tester under NDA until the game launches then to have a big open beta that just gets bogged down.
there are a decent amount of companies that do this, the problem is that at least half of the folks that do get chosen avoid and post videos or screenshots anyways. Then upload them to an anonymous account that the company can never truly backtrack. Sure the video gets removed from a fews sites but it will always keep popping up somewhere because its already a viral video now and everyone wants to see it.
Problem is that some companies say oh pre-order our game to get into the beta.....i hate this idea and am truly against that type of promotion to get people to play your game which of course once you pre-order to certain stores the only way you can get your money back is by either switching pre-orders or cancelling it and using it on a current purchase most of the time you never see the money in cash again. Sure $5 isn't much but it does add up over time.
I call bullcrap. Prove it. I could not find any.
