How does the star rating work?

I've been a member since '04 and never did understand how the star system works.  Currently I have 3 stars, and am curious as to what causes them to raise and lower?

Oh and on a sidenote it seems I have had a title stripped from me.  No longer can I be a Hardcore Member, but rather only an advanced member :-/

Just curious though!

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

    No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
