Guild Wars: The First Ten Years

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The ArenaNet and Guild Wars teams have produced a great retrospective look back at the first 10 years of the game. The video was filmed during the ArenaNet holiday party and gave devs a chance to look back at The First 10 Years. It's fifteen minutes of great memories. Check it out!

I'll be looking at this.  In my down-time, currently, I re-fired up my GW1 and am taking another character through the paces. Looking forward to GW2.

ArenaNet's got a really sweet story going there and nice of them to share it. Great to hear all their points of view and personalities involved.

Wow, you made an a article about this really fast. I think that you should have put this article in Guild Wars 2 section. First reason is that almost half of this video is dedicated to making of Guild Wars 2; and secondly - the name of the article implies that Guild Wars 1 is 10 years old (it was released in spring 2005).

i still cant figure out why its called "Guild Wars".  if they wanted a descriptor title, it should be called "small scale team-based instanced pvp matches"

...between Guilds :P. They put those matches in the context of Guild attacking other Guilds Stronghold.

Guess what those small scale teams are from? Guilds. It's ladder play, tournament play, the pinnacle of pvp in Guild Wars was Guild versus Guilds. What did they feature? You guessed it, Guilds. Hence the name Guild Wars. Educate yourself next time and be informed.

Wait a second, ArenaNet formed from Blizzard employees in Spring 2000, which means their "First Ten Years" was spring of last year.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

Actually, the Anet didn't form until a year after their leaving Blizzard.  They originally were called Triforge Games when they founded in Spring 2000, so the video title 'Our first ten years: The Arenanet Retrospective' is actually accurate for just the Arenanet part of the company--looking back on their first ten as they begin their eleventh year as a company.

The game title also refers to: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Guild_Wars

Besides, the game originally focused on the PvP aspect, and especially Guild versus Guild matches.

Wow has it been 10 years now? I remember beta testing this back in the day. It was quite the scope then and AreneNet delivered it quite well. Guild Wars was quite the innovative game then, with an unheard of f2p model, heavy instance use, and quite the stunning scenery for the time. Bravo Guild Wars, you've done well. I hope your successor holds true to its roots.

    I play in a sandbox.

This company are thieves!  I created an account (after buying a Key) and had to stop playing, almost straight away, due to family issues. I only created one random test character. I recorded my user name and password for future reference. I logged back on only to find I now have to put in my Character name as well. Seeing it was a while ago, I couldn't remember the name of this Test Character. So now, despite having paid for it, I cannot log on. I sent email after email to their Customer Service. They simply do not reply and certainly do not advertise a phone number as an alternative on their site, at least not one I can see. Maybe I'm missing something. I will NOT be buying Guild Wars 2. This company thieves your money through no customer service!

I apologise if this offends anyone, but taking money and ignoring customers is wrong.

Fool. ArenaNet doesn't have it's own customer service, NCSoft handles that department. And besides, you are part of a small minority of people who lost their account and required customer service, and you are part of an even smaller minority of people that didn't retrieve his account afterwards. You can't say that a company is full of thieves, just because YOU lost your account, and didn't manage to retrieve it afterwards.

I was in the same situation. I had stopped playing for a number of years, and recently reinstalled Guild Wars.

I had kept my login and password, but I had forgotten my characters' names.

I followed the instructions (linked below) and they emailed the information to me.
