LF a harsh mmorpg.

lilreap2k3lilreap2k3 Member UncommonPosts: 353

After trying mmorpg after mmorpg for the past year, I ended up back in WoW when Cataclysm was released. My reasoning for returning to a game I said I was done with was because it was supposed to be a lot harder than the previous expansions. Well after nearly a month I am already bored again. I was done with heroic gearing in the first week or so, and have been raiding the past 2 weeks. Granted my guild hasn't downed every boss in the raid content yet; it just feels like the same old fights. After getting used to the new hp pools and damage/healing the game is back to being easy mode.

Here is my character page for anyone interested. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/uldaman/antic/simple

I guess my question is; is there a populated mmorpg with difficult content? I miss that feeling of adrenaline when going into a zone with crazy hard mobs and hoping you come out alive with loot. For example Valley of Death in Asheron's Call. When that place was released I remember many a deaths happened. Or getting mobbed like crazy in the Olthoi and Tusker dungeons if the respawns caught up with you. God those were the good old days. Mass killing and tons of loot to sift through. Basically looking for a game of high risk, high reward.

(I would go back to AC if there was still a population.)

Playing - Minecraft, 7 Days To Die, Darkfall:ROA, Path of Exile

Most difficult game that I played was Darkfall if you are trying to get into the competitive side of it. There is a 14-day trial so nothing to lose and emotional highs and lows that no other MMORPG can match imo. Twich-based with risk vs reward. http://www.playdarkfall.com

    good luck.

Darkfall is probably the harshest MMO I know of.

But forget anything you knew from WoW. Don't even mention WoW in Darkfall or prepared to be laughed at.

Darkfall is Full Loot Free PvP sandbox MMO. Which means anyone can kill you anywhere at any time and loot all your stuff. Does this sound harsh enough?

Also it is a skill based game (no lvls only skills which you lvl) and it plays like a FPS. No autoaiming. No bullshit. To hit with an arrow or a spell you have to aim.

Most people don't have what it takes to play a game like Darkfall. Most will try and quit. Some will return to the forums and cry all day.

The truth is darkfall is not for everyone. To play this game you have to forget what you know about MMOs. Your gear doesn't mean sh!t. Its easily replacable even the high end gear.

Nobody will have mercy on you. In your first days you will get ganked repeatedly. There is no mercy. You will try to farm. Once you have accumulated a few gold and can afford a new spell or something bam someone will gank you and you die.

The learning curve is big. Character progression is slow. There is no tutorial. The UI is clanky. No quests to help you except a few noob quests which nobody does. No markers. No mercy. The game practically screams get away from me.

But if you don't listen to the screams. If you have balls of steal and determination. If your goal in a game is not to have the best gear or become the best player in a month, but just to have fun, then join us in Darkfall.

It is the most rewarding MMO experience out there and its getting better every day.

Be advised I am not suggesting you try this game. No sane person would. I am just informing you of its existence and its qualities in case you are the kind of person that doesn't listen to advice ;)

Unfortunatly "harsh" for most MMO's means  'el sicko de gind'

There are several that out there, but populated?.. polished?.. innovative?  Very few.

I'd say that Vanguard is probably the best, but it lacks in population.

Eve is everything like you describe.. but doesnt sound like your type of game, and takes a while to get to good bits.

You could check out 'Perpetuum Online'  its kinda like Eve but with robots on the ground, you'd still need to get into a good corp rather quick tho.

Suprisingly, my biggest reccomendation would be Lotro, or even DDO.  I know they are Free to play.. but they meet all your pre-requisites.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I must say I am really surprised at how many people recommended Darkfall. I played Darkfall on and off since NA1 release. I will agree that the game is harsh, but not really what I am currently looking for. I am looking for a pve game with pvp as a side game if at all.

Well if your wanting a difficult game that requires twitch -based reflexes. It's not an MMO but it is fun and challenging because the skill level of your opponents vary is League of Legends. Sure its not an MMO but it has RPG elements to it, plus it has 2 leveling systems. In the actual battle game where you level up and gear out your characters to level 18; which you can get within 30mins depending, most games last around this time or an hour if both sides are doing good. Then you have your summoner level which is your actual progress in the game. Unlocking Masteries (talent points) purchasing runes (equipped to enhance your champions stats) and then you have items you buy in game; which you can change your setup however you want every game. Plus on top of that its free. So something that can pass the time while you wait for that MMO you want.

For PvP, I think Age of Conan has a great style unless you've tried that. Many people have tried it back before it was basically revamped (In the best way possible) It wouldnt hurt to try it with the recent changes made. The Melee classes are very fun and different from most MMORPGs.

PvE isnt too challenging (Instance Wise) but with the open world pvp, its kill or be killed in high level areas. Its fun to read others actions and decide whether to wage war with them over a territory where you farm NPCs. Just my two cents thought :)

I would disregard anything dealing with Funcom.

    1. They recently have a offer to try and get players to try out their expansion for 10 days free, but scam you for a subscription renewal that you don't find out until you see your statement.

    2. The population in low-mid areas is very low on the PVP servers. So if your wanting PVP action you probably have a long ways to wait to get in the level range where a lot of the players are at. Otherwise I feel as far as getting into PVP right away AoC is the worst option out of all the available PVP games.

In addition to that with problem 1. I wouldn't even toss my money at Funcom for any of their future titles or existing ones, with the scam they tried to pull. I would look elsewhere and invest your money in a company that deserves it, not takes it under some fishy vague wording.

    -----------------

And as far as difficult content goes. The only thing that is more challenging than any other game out there is the original EQ1, mobs aggro you, follow you to the zone line or until you can get to a guard in both instanced and open-world zones and you lose XP when you die. It doesn't get more challenging than that.

You want new and challenging, either Darkfall or Earthrise.  I'd choose Earthrise, seeing as the community will be newer, as well as the game.

there is no challenging PVE-centric game out there since ages: Lotro, Aoc, Aion, RIFT ... of course the asian ones like Shayia, Maestia, Aika, Joong, .... its all super easy without a challenge and versatility. they all overdo refining, balancing, accessability and the so called (way too) fast-paced-combat with again utterly refined and meaningless skillsets. just follow the storyline and grind your quests. dont look beside the rails: there is nothing worth, trust me.

this is the way to attract the masses and goal for the big revenue. at least the vendors think so. MMOs are your daily soap nowadays. easy to consume in 30 min nibbles without any hurdle or trouble. everything is designed in detail and your are allowed to be an acter according to their very precise storybook. dont expect any surprise, it is all calculated and forecasted in detail. everybody is happy and a superhero after a few days latest. it all feels warm and fluffy.

nobody likes to live in a sometimes harsh and realistic virtual world anymore, where you have to plan, to learn, to risk and to fear without knowing, if you are doing really right and being successful at the end.  just some indie-games are different, but as posted above, they are either PvP oriented or coming along with outdated graphics or at least they are very special.

played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years)
