I know Rift is a "quest/theme park/traditional style" MMO and not a sand box at all, but I would like to know one thing I have not found a good answer to.
In Aion the world is extraordinarily linear. As a matter of fact I recall some zones that literally felt like a side scrolling action game because there was so little choice on where to go.
In WoW the zones are relatively large and open. You feel like you are really free to wander around and explore the area. And most zones have multiple paths and quest lines you can get into at anytime.
So which is Rift? Open and explorable, or straight and linear?

Rift is Rift.
It's very similar to WAR.
You basically have the map divided into sections. Section A will be for levels X-Y. Section B will be levels Y-Z. etc.
You can choose to go where you like.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
In my journey to lvl 20 I found it to be more like Aion than WoW.

Yes thank you but my question was, is Rift open and explorable or straight and linear?
From what i've seen after 3 beta weekends, it's overly straight and linear, moreso than wow, but slightly less so than ffxiv.
If you want to follow storyline and do quests yes it is linear but if you just want to defeat rift invasions, dungeons and want to PVP no it is not linear. But remember, we have only seen first 20 lvls so we have no idea how much quests branch out later on.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?
