Not sure how popular minecraft is around here:
It's games like this or Dwarf Fortress that i think of as "Sandboxes". Would you play a mmorpg with a world like minecraft's? Even with the same graphics? How important is a "customizable" world like that to you? Would you say this is essential for a sandbox?

yeah. It would be cool to go around destroying peoples stuff I do that often on public servers on MC, its great.
Nah I don't actually do that...but I can easily see that happening. Someone taking months to build an awesome creation, then having it destroyed in minutes.
I personally don't find losing something I worked months on (of my life that I wouldn't get back in my lifetime, unless I'm immortal..) to have it be destroyed.
Having said that...there are sorta MMOs like Minecraft...Wurm, Haven and Hearth, Unreal World (singleplayer)...but they aren't exactly the same either. But along same kind of genre.
I actually would play a Minecraft MMO, but it would depend on how its done. A rumor going around that Notch (creator of Minecraft) is working on a MMO...but not sure if thats true or not, I know he is working on another game.

I already play it. It's called Wurm.
To this and every half dozen threads about "try minecraft"...

Essential? No. But I would play it if it had better graphics.
Godspeed my fellow gamer
If it had a decent engine, more npc features and not everything be made out of blocks then yes
yes, it should look better, but the flexibility due to the very simple but nevertheless challenging game-mechanisms in this game is outstanding.
of course you would need safe zones to avoid, that every idiot is able to destroy epic buildings. you cant allow this in a game like minecraft, not everywhere. you would need huge safe zones for the masses of lego-type of players.
i also agree, that WORM comes close. but this is also a bit too puristic for me. even if i am a sandbox-fan.
if just the big AAA-companies would reflect about the success-factors of Minecraft, and act accordingly, it would perhaps change the genre.
played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years)
months: EQII, Vanguard, Siedler Online, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2
weeks: WoW, Shaiya, Darkfall, Florensia, Entropia, Aion, Lotro, Fallen Earth, Uncharted Waters
days: DDO, RoM, FFXIV, STO, Atlantica, PotBS, Maestia, WAR, AoC, Gods&Heroes, Cultures, RIFT, Forsaken World, Allodds
My sarcasm detector failed...
What do you mean with "decent engine"? The problem with AAA-graphics is: You can't have a highly customizable world like minecraft with "realistic" graphics, it's way too complicated. Also, many people actually like the look of minecraft, but it's a matter of taste, of course.
Even Wurm Online is a trade-off: Graphics are more realistic, but the world offers less freedom in terms of terraforming/building.
More npc features? No thanks
This thread isn't really about "try minecraft"... Quite frankly, minecraft is still pretty basic in terms of features, and currently there are no plans for a mmo. It's just about the concept.
If you don't like minecraft, you might want to have a look at Dwarf Fortress instead (single player, free):

It's a little hard to get into, tho.
