i vote neither, i played in the beta and frankly, this is not worth what they are asking. I loved the game, the world, the NPCs but it just is not worth it.
Why do you waste time on the forum then complaining about the game? I LOVE everything about the game, they charge me money, they suck. LMAO.
While capes are nice, you guys will DEFINITELY see me on the PvP playing the baddie. It feels so nice to pound face over and over and do so in character with a big grin on my face.
i vote neither, i played in the beta and frankly, this is not worth what they are asking. I loved the game, the world, the NPCs but it just is not worth it.
I vote neither as well.
With a game that is so shallow, without the hint of a real virtual world (they gave us scenery, not a world), what's the difference between the two "factions"?
Follow the quests (aided by the all-knowing arrow), grind instances for gear, and engage in meaningless PvP. Both sides are pretty much the same.
No nobility required, no heart of darkness to be found, in this game.
I have obviously played WoW for WAY too long. I didn't realize the arrow the below poster was talking about, I never used it. Consider this eating crow :-P
Aided by the all-knowing arrow? You are forming an option of something that you OBVIOUSLY haven't played if you point out stuff that is THIS wrong.
Yeah, the all-knowing arrow. You didn't notice it? Did you play?
When you have a quest active, an arrow appears on the mini-map that points you toward the quest area, which is shaded on the mini-map to let you know you're in the right place.
The same dumbed-down quest aids that you find in many other current games.

You "loved the game, the world and the npc's" but it's not worth it?
What does a game have to be before it IS worth it?!?!?!!
I voted hero for the sake of the OP's question.

So you're disappointed that this game contains questing features that other modern MMOs have? Did you expect them to not include modern questing features so that you could feel more leet? Really? Let me ask you something? Do you insist on using land lines so that you can feel legit and old school?

Dude, get a real complaint.
Agreed. Some people seem to think that games should be modeled after the Amish lifestyle to be worth playing. Kinda like the guy that complained that it was wrong to be able to complete your mission through the communicator rather than travelling all the way back across the city to the mission giver.
I voted villian for my first toon. Dual pistols (with rifle at 10), gadgets, still flip-flopping on Lex or Joker. I ran Lex in beta so I may switch to Joker for live. Or not.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Given the target audience (casual game), I expected the dumbed-down mechanics, and it did not disappoint.
Unfortunately, DCUO did not also include many of the features of other MMOs that give them the feel of a virtual world worthy of a subscription fee.
What would have been truly innovative, and something I had hoped for, is if the game had provided tools and systems that would allow villains to engage in real criminality, and heroes the ability to combat said criminality, instead of shackling it with the same banal quests found in every other game. A game that allowed your role in the game to be determined by your actions in-game, instead of simplistically picking a side at the character creation screen.
So I ask again - what's the real difference between these two faction choices? To me, they are just as cosmetic and meaningless as the factional differences in WoW, WAR, and Aion.

As far as what you are describing for what you would like to see distinguish either side, I have no idea how that would be implemented tho. Are we talking about BioWares's morality slider they have used in so many of their games? Once you get to Ultra Naughty you are on the Naughty Faction, but you have the option of flip flopping through good deeds? Even Bioware, who has implemented a system like this in SP (Jaded Empire, Mass Effect 1,2, KOTOR 1.2) Is not doing this in their upcoming MMO. I imagine if you must decide on faction at character creation, then what defines you would have to be restricted to appearance, quests, rewards, etc... I am having trouble thinking of how to distinguish the 2 w/o imbalancing either side.

That does sound like an excellent idea, however the only problem would be that Heroes would be dependant on Villains being Villains and deciding to rob a bank or what have you Heroes would have to wait for Villains to start somthing before they could do anything. In open world PvP it would only get bashed. BUT as an instanced PvP where teams are set up in advance. Now that would be cool.
As to your last comment in your message I ask again, to those of us who will be picking up the game come 1/11/11 Hero or Villain?

I will definitely be hero. I can never force myself to be the bad guy. I just can't do it.. I feel like I'm going agaisnt my religion or something when I think about going villian. Plus Batman is awesome. Fuck the Joker, faggot. Wash off the gay makeup and become a real villian.

Umm....the joker made The Dark Knight the awesome movie it is and don't you DARE deny it. A Hero can be judged by the challenges he faces and the enemies he fights. I am a HUGE batman fan, but he wouldn't be so badass if it wasn't for the joker. No one else has had such an impact on Gotham and the Batman family. A quicklist of his bad deeds:
1. Killed a Robin (doesn't count that he came back because writers ran out of ideas)
2. Crippled the first batgirl.
3. Killed Commissioner Gordons Wife.
And thats just off the top of my head. His list could go on for pages.
Besides, he IS the most feared villian in DC. When Supervillians wanna scare eachother, they tell joker stories.

Hero. I can't bring myself to do bad even to mere pixel people.

I don't plan to play this game post launch but If I were, I'd roll a Villain similar to the Joker.

Villian. I've had it with being a good guy. I was alliance in WoW, a hero in CoX, and...i guess a good guy in AoC.
Time to be bad. =P
Plus, all the kids and baddies wanna be like supes or bats. I plan to pwn each and every one of em!!
SoulPlane 2: The Blackjacking is a American Movie Classic!
the way i see the release is...pvp servers is going to be villian infested.
its going to suck for heroes. my encounters is always 2 to 1 so release week is probably 3 to 1 or maybe 4 to 1.
there's gonna be a lot of crying.
i never had urges to play villians.
it is probably anti-authority complex but, some are just bandwagon jumpers.
Hero to start. Theres enough Targets... i mean, Villains already.
On the PvE server ill have mostly villains, probably an even split of hero and villain alts for the PvP srver.
On the PvP server i'll be hero.. only because I always seem to like to torture myself and be the underdog.
I salute you sir and offer up my services as your arch-nemsis!
