Read some posts here, and other places...still haven't fully made up my mind if I want to get this. I liked City of Heroes, at least the concept/combat (well combat was more fun than MMOs before it)...but going through the same exact instance/dungeon or whatever for doing missions, got old...and fast. Having said that, CoH did have nice overground combat.
Age of Conan tortage was awesome, didn't like it past that, except for...Cimmeria? The mountain region. That area was awesome. But the arrow thing for combat seemed kinda useless, but combat was fast paced and not falling asleep on your keyboard like WoW.
WoW I played for a while, NEVER got past 40...because for some reason, as soon as I hit 40 or almost reached it, I would want to make an alt because I was suddenly bored. Not sure what was up with that, but WoW endgame sucked...maybe that had to do with it. And I dunno, low level WoW was tons of fun, mid-high for me I just couldn't do it. Plus, I'm not big into doing hours long raids, or grinding battlegrounds...that are instanced...and don't even get me started on sh!y arenas. Just my opinion though, I'm sure some people like that. (had to include that last bit, I know I would probably be flamed, since people/trolls don't know what opinions are...)
My first MMO was Asheron's Call. Loved SWG. UO wasn't too bad. CoH I already mentioned. I LOVED Auto Assault, my favorite MMO (if anyone has played that), you drove around in a car and were able to interact with the environment and blow sh! up. I loved blowing up signs and destroying buildings. Loved Tabula Rasa (endgame content failed and the game died)...hmm...thats about my MMO experience. Well, I've played others, but those were my main ones, that I disliked/liked that meant the most to me.
DC Universe does look like a lot of fun. Think they said every 3 months is a major update, and in between, an update every month. So the game will continually evolve.
Also, I LOVE exploring in MMOs. Exploring is my favorite thing to do. Love going out and finding hidden/secretive/rare stuff. And by rare, I don't mean items. Like in WoW, I was in Stranglethorn Vale, and found a really pretty secluded area that had a waterfall and a pond...not many people seemed to know of it (at least at the time), was off the beaten track. I thought that was awesome.
Game events made by the GMs is an awesome "feature"...most MMOs are just stagnant and events never happen, unless its right before an expansion (LAME)
Crafting is a nice feature, but that isn't really required.
Socializing is nice.
To be honest, combat isn't really up there for why I play a game...though it is really nice if its done well.
Having a house to own and stuff adds to the immersion level, one huge negative I had in WoW...most MMOs I play have some kind of housing system. Not an end all thing, but if I don't like the MMO, that will just add greatly to my dislike...though if I like the MMO, it isn't a big deal and just becomes a minor annoyance.
Singleplayer RPGs I've played and loved that I can think of...Morrowind and Oblivion. Never did the main quest, I just explored and lived a "normal" life in the game.
Fallout 2 and Fallout New Vegas (loved them both, mostly cause of the setting)
Dragon Age Origins (nice story, and reminded me sorta of Baldur's Gate)
Mass Effect 1 (2 sucked)
Batman Arkham
Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga (currently playing this...freakin awesome)
Judging from MMOs/RPGs I've played before, and what I like to do in games...think DC might be a good fit for me?

Honestly no. While there are tons of secrets and clues to find, its not thats deep. There is no crafting and based on what you want DCUO isn't the game for you. Its all about the combat system, storylines (which are awesome) and the lore of the DC universe.
BTW how could you not like Mass Effect 2? Did u get pwned at the end? =P
SoulPlane 2: The Blackjacking is a American Movie Classic!
Sorry, I wrote a long post for you explaining everything, but MMORPG is acting wonky right now and some error wiped it out. So, I'll brief it.
Short version: The game is not for you.
Long verison: Heavily focused on combat, no crafting, exploration is still pretty good (Feats associated with it). Not comparable to other MMOs.
It's more of a try it and see sort of deal.
^ This.
That's a lot of information to parse through. I'm going to pick out things you identified as likes and dislikes and reply to them, though I haven't played all the game you mention and I've playe some that you don't.
Combat in DCUO is the most fun, fast-paced combat I've ever found in a MMO that maintained complexity. You can always have fast combat that's simple, of course, but DCUO has both the layers of skill and the speed. Definitely a huge plus in my books.
The world is very immersive and awesomely pretty. If you can get into Gotham as well as you can get into Cimmeria you'll love it for that.
I can't comment extensively on the end game yet. I was in the beta capped at level 20. But I can promise at least you'll get there since leveling happens fast. And you can always make an alt, yes.
On the level of sheer "things blow up and it looks pretty" I've never seen anything to beat DCUO. If you play a telekinetic power, your first power is one that suspends your opponent in the air and if something is available as an object to throw at them it comes flying at them. That includes anything up to the size of a BUS. There's nothing like seeing a bus fly in from the side of the screen and hit your enemy. It's just insane.
Exploration matters at least to the extent of collections and investigations which exist to collect. In practice they play a lot like resources you collect for rewards. Otherwise, while the world is pretty pretty pretty, you may not find a lot of unknown nooks to explore.
There's no housing at present and while everyone acknowledges that "bases" would be awesome I haven't heard a timeline on that.
GM events ... not sure about intentions on that and judging from beta it's not well set up for that. Then again, time could prove otherwise.
Hope that's some help. Based on your description I do think you're a good fit for DCUO. But others may have additional views.
EDIT, to reply to above posters - My opinion seems to differ from yours because I read the OP's likes and dislikes more closely. When you reply with "bad because no crafting" and he mentioned as something that's "nice" it hardly seems like a dealbreaker to me. He said he likes fast combat and cited a number of games that are not MMOs as positives. So when you say not comparable to other MMOs ... umm, yeah?
I say this because you're entiteld to opinions as I am, but please don't dismiss my recommendation as fannish. It was based off the OP's previous likes and dislikes. In my opinion, based more carefully on them than other offerings so far.
The telekenetic powers with throwing objects and stuff sounds like COH, and that was awesome.
To put it simply: if you think World of Warcraft is shallow, please stay away from DCUO. You might jump off a bridge.
- There is no crafting in DCUO. There is in WoW.
- There is no real Endgame in DCUO. in WoW Endgame is their Bread and Butter....
- A quadruple amount more of areas to explore in WoW then there is in DCUO....
- 6 "classes" and 14 spec trees in DCUO versus WoW's 10 classes and 30 spec trees......
- a great guild system and reward system for pvp, pve, etc in WoW.....DCUO has an almost non existent guild system. Thats all they have. no reward system, etc, etc.
I can go on and on about Pros and Cons. The only thing DCUO has over WoW is the costumes, and even then the other two superhero MMOS do it better. DCUO IS fun...for the first 3 days. After that it gets stale at a dizzying fast speed.
Also, OP, with all due respect, you cant make a judgement like "WoW's endgame sucks" when you yourself admit to never making a character past level 40. Not even exaggerating here, but you have not even experienced 90 percent of the games resources and content with only a level 40 toon.
Say what you will about WoW, but their endgame alone puts entire MMO's out of business.
For PVPers that like actionbased combat of DCU is heaven.
Also comparing a game that came out in 2004 and has had YEARS to put out endgame content to a new one is illogical.
Did you know that there was no real endgame when WoW first came out?

Thank you for the responses. Sounds like it might be a good MMO for those who like this type of gameplay, but not for me.

@ Xirik
I was only replying to the OP that said AT ITS CURRENT STATE WoW 's endgame was boring, and then asked if DCUO is better AT ITS CURRENT STATE. I was not trying to compare WoW how it is now to DCUO how it is before it is even launched. This is not one of those posts.
I apologize if there was any confusion.
I honestly think, that OP could enjoy DCUO over WoW. I has been bored by WoW very quickly. Just because its slow, boring and ugly game.
So if OP dont like it just as I do, he could enjoy DCUO, just as I do. I especially think, that PvP potential is much better in DCUO and it remids me GW in many ways (GWs GvG is best PvP to date for me).

You didn't mention many games that involve pvp. Sure, some have pvp involved, but not to the magnitude DCUO has. If not the primary, it is a huge focus for DCUO.
I didn't do engame either in beta, but It's hard to believe there's much pve content past 20 at this time. There are raids, and you can do past events over again as "duo" instead of the normal 4-man team, or do old storyline endings perfectly (no items taken or KO). You can also make different characters with different mentors so you have a unique storyline, but some of the same-level quests are offered to everyone.
You might get bored of pve content and want to pvp more often. I'm not sure if that's your cup of tea or not.
