Im thinking of buying this game but I dont want to use a controller but my friends are telling me Its hard to play without one.
Can someone who played the beta tell me if mouse/keyboard is viable? Think ranked pvp like.
Just to add, Im using a Razer Naga mouse so I still have 12 buttons to smash with my thumb.

I find mouse and keyboard to be very effective - though it may help that I'm using a trackball mouse. I mean a big trackball that sits in a hole and the base never moves. I think it helps with movement.
But yes, many PC gamers are using a mouse and keyboard and they certainly aren't hampered by it. I tried the console controller and was utterly lost with it. Can't use that thing to save my life. And I do very well at PvP.
Hope that helps.
I used both, prefered the keyboard and mouse, you can use either, but a used xbox controller cost what.. 15 bucks, if that, probably less, just buy one and try them both for yourself.

There are a lot of people that played this game with a mouse and keyboard and did great.
Some people prefered it over a controller just, because you have a lot more control over the camera as well as finer targeting than with a controller.
That said, I still prefered using a controller. It just made the combo attacks much easier for me to do overall.
It'll come down to adjusting to using one or the other either way.
Trackball mice still exisit? Wooow......

It depends on how you like to play really, a controller might be more relaxing since you can sit back in your chair or whatever. but that is about the only difference I was able to see.
I myself didn't notice much of a difference between controller and kb/mouse, but I prefer using kb/mouse since it is what I am used to.
It's an inverted trackball - actually quite expensive and for ergonic reasons. The ball sits in the center, there are sensors inside, and rather than the mouse moving at all the ball just rotates in the sort of pit that it's sitting in. And the buttons are beside it. There's laser pick up inside that track's the ball's movement.
I find it gives me very find control over movement, and there's never that annoying moment when you need to pick up the mouse and move it because you've pushed it too far to one side. It's really cool, actually.
Thats a relieve, I really dont want to play MMORPGs with a controller. Guess Ill give it a go then!
Can you play without a controller? Quite easily. But why would you want to? Its far more natural and fun with a gamepad.

Nothing natural about it. Controller and mmorpg shouldnt even be used in the same sentence.
IMO
Thats what makes DCUO so tasty. It pulls it off wonderfully and stands out from the pack.
Besides if your a gamer, we all STARTED on a gamepad. Its like riding a bike.
Holla at me if you pulled off 50 hit combos in Killer Instinct and lemme know how you plan to do that with a keyboard

Heck, some MMOs I use a combination of keyboard, controller, and voice command programs.
Too bad STO sucked so bad. I had fun reinforcing my shields by saying "Shields Up".
My wife didn't like it so much.
This is like Street Fighter in an open world. Do you play Street Fighter with a keyboard and mouse? lol
You will spare yourself from carpal tunnel syndrome
I love playing action MMO's with controllers.
I dont understand why people are so against the option of both in an MMO...
I personally enjoy being able to lay down in my bed and game, which i cannot do with a keyboard and mouse, yeah when im playing seriously like pvping or something id rather use the keyboard and mouse, but if im just grinding leasurely, give me a controller and a lounge position andim good to go.

You dont NEED it but you should try it out if you have a controller laying around. I tried it with kbd/mouse combo, controller & gamepad/mouse combo & prefer gamepad/mouse or kbd/mouse personally. Controller works well but i've been playing mmo's for about 10 years so a keyboard & mouse just feels more natural. I also feel that a controller is never as fast or accurate as a good mouse.
to get an idea of the gameplay with keyboard and mouse read my post here. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/4000299
I found the keyboard and mouse to be perfectly comfortable.

Now I have a PS3. Is it possible to just plug in the PS3 controller with its USB adapter? I tried it once but the system found no drivers for it...does DCU have em?
I played fine without and hadn't even thought of it. Having said that. . I did find the repetative clicking a bit of a hassle. It is too bad the game is so focused on the hand to hand over the powers. I would say buy it. . try it out and then get a controller if you think it would help. You certainly don't need one though.

You have answered you own question. You don't want to use a controller, so don't. That's all that really matters. If you liked either one, then it might be worth discussing. The mouse/keyboard works perfectly fine. I don't get the fuss. Yes, you click the mouse button a lot more than most MMORPG's, but not as much as you do in an FPS. I know that some MMORPG people that used the old style MMORPG setup to play will have trouble. However, those that used a standard WASD setup or have played typical FPS games with that setup, should not have much trouble.
You are going to be using 1-8 a lot on your keyboard. If you're used to that, then you'll be fine. Or perhaps remap it somewhere else. That's the only thing that is weird to me since I'm used to clicking on stuff on my UI.
The biggest problem in people playing the game with controllers is the community and chat part of the game... MMO's are a social hub and chatting is one of the most important things i do, and people laying on thier beds playing with controllers just don't chat that much.

Yeah, that's the definition of a trackball, we all got it before you explained it needlessly the first time.
Trackballs are, by definition, mice with the ball on top.
A mouse with the ball on the bottom is just a ball mouse, not a trackball.

I bought this when i bought my ps3 years ago hoping that one day an MMO would come along that was half as fun as Everquest Online Adventures(for ps2).. Plus most anyone with a modern cell phone with the slide out keyboard will already have no issue with this little device that plugs in where the ps3 charger goes.
Still i would get it for PC anyways as its much easier to go kb/mouse and chatting still will take some time getting used to on that small querty keyboard.
I might perhaps get it for both later on if it doesnt require me to set up another account for the ps3 version. Does the ps3 and pc share account names?
