Expression of opinion.

Why should it be necessary for anyone who posts on these forums to explicitly state that "this is just their opinion".  It's a given that anyone who posts here is only expressing their opinion yet for some reason it seems lately that stating that "this is just an opinion" tends to calm the flamers.

It's a given that anything posted on these forums is opinion.

Of course it becomes fact when linking to official text or something but outside of that, it's just an opinion and that is all.

Because a lot of the time the "hardcore" players will state "where are your facts" when you are expressing an opinion about a game.

I guess stating this is a way of saying "don't flame me for saying what I want"

It happens more than you think. [Link to WoW shit talking forums or "WoW clone" threads]

Point is that stating that one is simply stating their opinion is not necessary.

Because a lot of the time people are not stating their opinions.  They are spouting information that they think is true saying things like:

    "The majority believe...

"Statistics show... "  and then don't provide any reference.

    "Everyone knows that..."

These are not expressions of opinion, it is actually misrepresented, or outright fabricted information.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

Thats just your Logic talking. When dealing with online forums, you ahve to forget that logic is applied in a consistent manner, and the hyperbole, rhetoric and make believe are the order of the day.

If you insist on being logical, you will hurt your brain, and get incredibly angry at the sillyness of people.

Please, for your own sanity, do not read youtube comments. (Advice based on my opinion)

as people immerge into the talk, they some times tend to forget that we (mostly) discuss opinions.  Sometimes we really immerge into a complex topic.

some people, because of their knowledge/post number tend to undirectly count their opinions as facts.

    trolls/ragers (commonly) dont state opinion

of course people calm down when some one says, hey its just my opinion. A opinion is a personal thing, little persons change their opinion over a stranger.  Because a persons opinion is so strong, the other person kinda quits. Its like trying to change some ones religion.

Well, of course people with a open mind, probably will change their opinion if there are good reasons. Mostly dont. As a matter of fact, 80% of mmorpg.com threads are more like undeniable afirmations made by posters rather than a discusion. Ye, sometimes there is 20 pages of talk, but at the end people have the same opinion they had 20 posts ago. Almost none is the number of persons willing to share and change their opinion.

edit: its just my opinion... no im kiding

There are certain members who believe it is their duty to police these boards and correct everyone else so when they disagree with something they often feel the need to point out that the opposing view is just an opinion. Obviously this is just my opinion :D

It's not necessary, and I don't recall it being made any kind of a mandatory rule. But I haven't read the forum's rules of conduct in a while - did something change recently?

Of course, it's not a bad idea to make sure you know the difference between fact and opinion when posting. Some people express their opinions as if they were objective fact, and defend them as such, and ultimately come across looking like idiots.

At least in my opinion, they look like idiots.

Agreed. The issue is that people tend to inextricably link themselves to their opinions / worldview, thus any criticism of their opinion - irrespective of the validity of the criticism - is perceived as an attack on all they hold dear.

As bonobotheory stated,  a lot of 'arguments' tend to resolve on whether something is a 'fact' or an 'opinion' i.e. a 'fact' if it's a view that one supports, and an 'opinion' when it [point] is expressed by someone else. Yes, people who confuse, or choose to obfuscate 'fact' and 'opinion' are indeed idiots; much worse, they usually are not interested in a debate or argument - to consider the merits of a particular viewpoint - more to shout down anyone who holds an opposing viewpoint.

Or as someone else as stated, "just my opinion" is chucked in at the end of a particularly vitriolic post - the equivalent of casually lighting and throwing a molotov cocktail over one's shoulder - either as a (poor) attempt to ward off the flames that will surely follow, or actually fan the forthcoming flames!

I have noticed an irritatingly number of posts, whose attempt at a reasoned (hem hem) argument states, "Well, that's just your opinion ...". Duh. No shit, Sherlock!
