Newbie Guide: Get an extra skill point straight out of the tutorial.

Lots of players new and old will be entering DCUO Tuesday,  and I thought I would post a quick handy dandy guide for players to get an extra skill point before they start their first mentor mission.   As those that have played the game know, you gain additional skill points through feats.  Feats can be very simple, like completing a mission without dying,  or as tough as completing a Raid in under a certain time limit.

So I've put together this quick little guide for new players, and maybe some old ones, that are willing to spend a little extra time in the tutorial completing these feats, so by the time you enter the open world you have an extra skill point in your arsenal.

Understand, some skill sets will make this much easier, for example, dual pistols, single handed, martial arts, staff, handblasters, and bow will make one feat infinitely simpler to accomplish,  but I digress,  lets get straight to the guide:

Beginners Skill Point GUIDE

1)   You start out the tutorial running through a number of enemies,  but your first major "battle" will come when you come to a room with a large brainiac robot patrolling the prisoner bay.  This enemy will do a charge where he  gets an orange bubble around himself and charges you.    Allow him to hit you, and after being knocked down/back  hit the block key (shift or right button on the controller)  to perform a breakout.

Congratulations!  That was your first feat!  Do that 4 more times and you'll get another feat for breaking out 5 times.

2)   Moving forward in the tutorial,  you will be gaining a number of loot items,  make sure you are equipping these items as you go.  Not only will that give you some additional defense,  but this will also start chipping away at a style feat, for collecting 10 styles.  You won't complete this one until you leave the tutorial,  but make sure you are breaking the glowing boxes so that you obtain all the loot in the tutorial.

3)  Eventually you will jump down an air shaft into an area where you will notice a control station.  After activating the control station a number of enemies will spawn in the area ahead.

When you get to the opening to the area you will notice a numebr of red barrels.  Pick up 5 of these red barrels and throw them at the enemies by targeting the enemies (tab or left button) and pressing right click, (or triangle  - Y on 360) .

By destroying 5 of them you've just gotten another feat.   After killing the rest of the enemies the door will open, and more enemies will respawn, kill them as well.  If you are a brand new player, say Hi to Ambush Bug for me on the way out.

4)   The next area will be simple, you'll run into a device that stuns you,  if you haven't broken out 5 times already, use this device to stun you so you can break out however many times you need to achieve that feat.  Destroy that device and move forward.

In the next room you'll notice a number of orange health barrels.  Just like with the red barrels,  Pick 5 of them up and hurl them at enemies to get the feat.

5)  Head through to the next area where you will soon defeat all of the enemies and end up in the final room with the boss.  Destroy all of the pillars and the final boss will drop down to attack you.

This is very important:  Do not melee the boss.  Stay ranged, and use your very basic ranged attack.  Make sure you target the boss so when he teleports you stay on him.   You will soon rack up a 100 hit combo giving you a total of 3 feats.  X25  X50 and X100.

Once you obtain that you have finished with all of the feats in the tutorial.  Move on to the next area,  the police station/club

6)   Once in the station,  head to the mailbox and pick up the mask that oracle or calculator gives you.  Put it on.  Next run to the vendors and sell anything that isn't equipped (you can keep your soder colas).  Then buy yourself a new weapon,  and any other various style of clothing.

Put those on and you should now have 10 styles and your next feat point.

7)  Next,  you can either do 1 of 2 things,

A)    if you are a batman mentor,  go outside into the open world, and climb on top of the police station.  Touch the bat signal.  You've now received the last feat needed for your skill point, congratulations.

B)  If you are any other mentor,  you can either

1)   Head to gotham and find the batsignal   ( Just look up in the sky, when you see it, follow it back to the station,  if you are a hero, its on top of the east end police station    )  , or go to any other various locations nearby like supermans statue in the park or the top of the Daily Planet,

OR

2)  You can zone to the Watchtower or Hall of Doom.

Once there, your mission is quite simple,  run through the main areas.  You can either just run through them quickly (takes 5 minutes) or you can pick up each of the investigations in the mentor areas.  Either way you will receive a feat point  (or do both for 2 extra feats).

No matter which way you decide to do it, you will receive your extra skill point before you even hit your first mentor mission. If you're on the PvP server, use it for your block breaker or leap attack and go to town.   :)

Its fairly easy to go through, its just a matter of knowing that you can do this, and where to go to do it.  I could write another set of guides on the easiest skill points to get,  but truth be told after level 10 you'll have enough skill points to get your basics down and the rest is a matter of just going through your feat log and seeing what you need to do to complete the feats.

You need your first 3 skill points to compete in PvP primarily, and it doesn't hurt to have it in PvE,  Being able to counter blocks and interrupt attacks is the difference between a tough fight and an easy fight  so I figured I'd write this guide for new players so they won't feel like they're missing out or that the beta players have an advantage by knowing something like this.  image

If you are missing a feat by the time you exit the club, you can always do one of the races outside.  Those starter races are incredably easy, no one should have a problem getting a platnum on one of them.  (One of the races I was 5 seconds away from getting the platnum walking..)

Thats also a very good idea.  I probably could have added that as a third option,  and it would start players on getting the "beat all classic races without using an upgraded travel power" feat.

To be honest, I'd love any tips you could give :) I only got onto the beta on the last day of play and was only able to get around 3 hours of game time tops. So..... all the more tips the better :D

I could literally write a number of guides based on my experiences and different tactics and builds that I've tested,  but by launch,  many of the build guides could be misleading with the way they've been rebalancing powers.

In some stages of beta, I could use a mental or gadgets controller and go through entire mobs without ever using a weapon skill, and I had a build to bolster that,  but within two patches it was no longer available.   Thats why when writing this guide I stuck to something fairly simple that was highly unlikely to change.
