Purple/Green/Blue hair - MMO vs RL

So it just occurred to me that in MMOs, it's easy to make a good looking female character with 'weird' hair colors. Here's an example from Rift:
That looks cute right there. You can do the same thing with green/blue/red hair, and it'll still look cute. But in real life, a female with purple or green or blue hair is generally considered weird. Even if they're normal people, it doesn't look 'cute' in any way.
So how is this possible? What is it in the male brain that triggers a "that looks nice" response in digital characters with purple hair, but a "... weirdo" response to real people with purple hair?
Any psychologists out there that can clarify?

I go for the ovewieght bald look myself.
I figure it doesn't look good in RL either, which is a pity.
When i was younger i dated pretty girls with purple, green and blue hair. They usually had mohawks or liberty spikes as well. Punk girls are hawt.
depends on the dye really. Bad thing is most hair dye, even supposed natural hair color dyes look fake and alien. The only time I think it looks good is if the color is streaked in with their natural hair color.
Some multi colors look really cool too but in that case it cant be half assed, like this.

You think? I really don't know. I've never seen anyone who dyed their hair in a weird color that looked good while doing it. Then again, maybe the problem is that the people dying this hair are usually individuals that are troubled in a way. Insecure about the fact they're not photo-model material, trying to be 'cool' and, or trying to be special and stand out. I'm still having a hard time picture a woman with pink hair that would make it look good though. Even looking at some hollywood stars, I can't imagine blue would look good on any of them.
The issue here is that you need the right body type to make it work in the first place.
When you see a smoking hot chick with pink hair you think "wow, she must be wild. I like that". If you saw a pimply fat chick with it you think "Is she antisocial or something? ewwww!". I remember this really good looking punk chick in high school had a different hair color every month, and by God, it worked for her. Then when the fat goth ones did it I questioned why they would even bother to stand out any more than they already do. We try our hardest *not* to look at them. /shiver
