In the end, when you get the best gear and what not, does everyone look basically the same, just different colors? I guess I'm thinking that this is a lot like WoW in that as you get gear through raids, each piece changes your appearance slightly, but after a bunch of pieces you can tell who is wearing what based on how they look.

Personally I don't that will happen. I think most players want to be different even in looks. Will there be some with the same gear showing, sure. But dont' think it will be as bad as say WOW.
Just a guess though. I know I never took the look of the new gear. just the stats.
No actually the more you play the more people will look different. Many people complain that the starting customization of your character is limited, but you should know that they are limited so you can discover and show off (or not) the gear you find. With the way you can choose the look of any piece that you have collected actually causes great diversity. Even if say everyone is wearing tear 2 pvp gear, they could all still look different and have the same stats because each piece of gear you have (shoulders, belt, chest, arms, etc.) all give you the ability to show whatever look you have for that piece.
Example is you get close to a whole set called antifreeze very early on and if you like the gloves you can have the antifreeze gloves be what people see, no matter what gloves you are wearing.
No, you can wear items for pure cosmetic reasons while still keeping the stats of your better equipment that may not be the right look for you.

if you show the armor sure everyone will look the same but, almost everything in the game has it's own apperance so most people I saw made custom costumes to show. Also keep in mind once you aquire a style it's your forever you don't have to have the peice on or in your inventory to use the look. Afterall this isn't a fantasy game heroes are supposed to look unique personaly I had flashes armor on for stats and used style tab to make my own look.
You can choose what you look like, keep the gears stats but have it look like some other gear item you like.
Kind of. But most people use the options to keep the pieces/sets they prefer the look to OVER the actual items their wearing. That's the beauty. You unlock a specific "look" when you buy/acquire a new item. You can then go into your costume and lock down looks you have that you like. You just can't wear archangel wings if you haven't unlocked them (just a random example). Once you get the wings, you can lock'm down so even if you equip a cape piece, your toon will still show the wings.
So once you've had a piece of gear on you can select to "show" that piece at any time even if you don't have it in your inventory? Thus expanding your customization?
yep, once you put it on it goes under your styles options and stays there even if you delete the actual gear item from invetory
Exactly. This prevents players from judging others' difficulty in PvP based on wearing bad gear or not.
As others have said, the deal is basically this.
You choose how you look at character generation. Some things are available at that time, though not as many options as some players would like.
In the course of play, your character gets access to other style options. Some of those you gain access to by finding "loot" in that style (in other words, an item with stats and an appearane associated with it), some you gain access access to by gaining just the style (an item that unlocks the style but doesn't have stats), and you can always buy any of the original starting options too.
Now, here's the deal. Independent of the items you are actually using for stats, you can display any style you have unlocked on that character at any time. So while it may well be the case that at end game most players are using a limited selection of gear for stats, you can always look as unique as you want to.
This is definitely one of the strengths of DCUO and something they got right. Leaving aside the arguably limited number of options on character gen, the seperation of stats and style is a great move. If anything, characters will look more unique as the game progresses rather than less, as everyone has access to more options.
Incidentally, you can also "lock" your style so that swapping gear won't change the way you look. I recommend doing that and reviewing your outfit periodically, as a character update. You probably don't want to consider whether or not to change into each new thing as you find it.
I agree with you Val, this is one of the strengths of DCUO. This way of opening up gear and appearance is a really cool idea!
The only thing that I don't like is that you can only have 3 colors in your costume set total.
Point. But much as I initially resisted it, you'd actually be amazed at how well it works. Unless you're trying to play a Rainbow Defender or something equally garish, you really don't need or want more than three characters.
One nice option is this. You've definied primary, secondary, and tertiary colours on your character. Let's say Black, Dark Red, and White for the sake of the example. You want to wear a pair of books that appears primarily in Black, with Dark Red straps and White trim. But you'd prefer that the books look mainly Dark Red. You can do that at least, by rearranging how the three colours appear on each item.
I acknowledge there are still some things you can't do this way. But it's very flexible in practice. I can't think of any character where I've been thinking "if only I could add a fourth colour."
I don't know if it was a beta only option but I was able to switch those 3 colors at any time. I was able to go into my character menu & when I clicked on the styles option for each item I had there was a tab labeled "Colors" & then I could switch those 3 colors. I started with red, black & white then tried red, blue & yellow & finally ended up with green, black & white. After beta testing for about a week I had switched my colors about 7 or 8 different times, even the color of my skin. I also noticed a haircut vendor & style vendors that sold different generic items to use for you character in the Hall Of Doom. The diversity in game was really pretty amazing. At least once a day in beta I found myself admiring another players choice of style for their toon or laughing my ass off like when I saw the guy dressed as a ninja turtle or the guy with the clown mask dressed like Ronald McDonald.
You can change how you look through the style tab
