The anti aliasing question

OkhamsRazorOkhamsRazor Member Posts: 1,047

I'm quite enjoying Rift but one of the things I seeing being discussed in chat is  anti aliasing .Many people seam to think this game badly needs it and I'm playing it on high settings and I must admit the graphics do look a bit jagged around the edges .Given this game is still in beta maybe it will be improved somewhat by release ? What are your thoughts on this issue ?

Well, in beta everyone will tell you antialiasing will be enabled at release. I also used to think so.

    Not anymore.

Rift uses Gambryo engine.  War uses this engine, and so did Tabula Rasa. Which partially explains why all those games have sameish look and feel about them.

What is peculiar that both of said games didnt have no antialiasing.

Was it game specific, or is it limitation of Gamebryo engine - remains to be seen.

im pretty sure there is a directx9 limitation where you cannot have HDR (high dynamic range) lighting AND AA on at the same time.... thats why AA is missing... need directx 10-11 engine to do both... so they chose good lighting over AA...

This is true although you can force AA on with HDR if you use a 3rd party program like nHance or ATI Tools.

i tried to force AA with ati CCC the standard way,  and when i signed in to RIFT all textures were gone... all you could see was water...

Yeah, Rift does not support it until now, not even when you force it through ccc. War however did (through ccc).

There has been no news regading this from the devs as far as I know.

I played rift this weekend on my laptop ( usually use it on the road) it's a Alienware Mx11. It ran rift on high settings with around 20-30fps during large rift encounters (50+ normally). I didn't notice jaggys to be honest. I did try the game on ultra on my home PC for an hour or so and again didn't really notice any. Maybe it's just my systems but I didn't feel that forced AA was needed.

Might be when playing on smaller screens it doesn't quite show but when I'm playing on my 30 inch it could use some AA.

The game looks fantastic but with AA for me it would look gorgeous ;)

That's true my MX11 is small it kinda falls in between the size of a normal laptop and netbook when it comes to screen size and with my home PC due to eye issues I use a rather large CRT for the richer colors that it offers. That's probably why I'm missing the jaggys.

I really hate the lack of AA. Everything is jaggy. I'm running an Alienware Aurora with a 5870HD, 6 GB of RAM, etc. I really hope something is enforced that smooths out the details. I really like the game so far, at first I was a little confused about my liking it or not, but now I do and I plan to pre-order. The lack of AA is really my only qualm with the game, sadly is a large qualm...
