This is not a bash, just curious as I admit I have not been following this game very closely.

After the pile of... crap .. ya.. (I can say that right?).. that was STO. I kind of was MMO'd out.

So now I am thinking about getitng into this game but I am wondering if there is going to be more brought to the table later on.

Examples.

Travel powers- Flight, Speed, and Acrobotics..

Thats it? what about Teleportation or Jumping..ect..

Powers-Fire, Ice, Magic, mental, sorcery, gadgets..

What if I do not want any of that?

What if I Wanted some guy who does earth based attacks (rocks, earthquakes..ect..)

Or even simpler..

What if I Wanted my hero/villian to be super strong, can take hits, strength attacks..

Again not bashing, I am just curious if this is in it or if it has been suggested that more will be added later on?

Yep, you might want to sit out for a while if you're not happy with the things you've listed. Earth may make a comeback later, as will light. There has been no hint that travel powers would be expanded upon, but it's possible I suppose.

I would assume they would add more powers later. It's pretty much what every other MMO does in some shape or form.

The travel powers are fairly versitile. But I agree more is good. Teleport is one I wish they added in myself.

From what I read on the forums was that there are some powersets that didnt make it in time for launch. I believe there were in at some point (you can see some parts of them in some videos), prolly before beta. But anyway from what I read they would be added at a later time. Ones I remember hearing about were hard light (green lantern Im guessing) lightning or electricity. I believe earth was one too but dont quote me. This is actually my biggest dislike about the game, the lack of powersets. I really wish they didnt tie roles to powersets either, I cant stand that about the game either.

I'll be in at launch and I do love the game, just a few aspects I don't like about it.

I will probably give it a go. At least to see what it is like and to learn how to play it.

It can go one of  3 ways I suppose.

I really like it and continue playing  after the free month.

I like it, but decided to hold off paying for a sub until more is added

I dislike it and doesn not really matter to me if they intend to bring more.

As long as they did not say, what you see is what you get. Thats what I Was worried about.

    Thanks for the feedback.

For starters, though there are only 3 travel powers they are much more functional then in other games.  You also build on those travel powers.

Acrobatics has zip lines and a rocket assisted glide.  You can cling to walls and climb.  Super speed allows you to run up walls,  increase the speed with speed force, or acquire a double jump,  flight has a few other nuances like additional speed gained by gravity  and increasing the speed of flight as well.

Each of these powers also has a number of attacks that you can apply skill points to,  like creating whirlwinds, or dive bombing.

As for having only 6 powers,  it wasn't slated to be so,  but I would guess that it was more important for them to get these powers right and balanced then just have the original 12 and not have time to get them all right.  Judging from the end of beta and the way they were switching powers around,  I'd likely say there was no chance to get 12 powers with 2 subsets balanced.

Currently though,  those 6 sets break down into 2 different sets,  so that is about 12 power pools to choose from,  plus the powers you can pick from your movement trees, and there are 3 of those,  and then the iconic power list which is pretty big.

On top of that your power list is only half of your character,  you also have weapon skills.

As for taking more damage,  there are still tank sets, or defense powers.  You also get extra abilities that increase strength, etc.  Hope that answers your questions.

If you don't want Flight, super speed, or Acrobatics, and if you don't want any of the powers listed, or any of the weapon choices simple answer: Play a different game.

You're asking questions that can easily be asked upon any other game.

Lets pick a game at random...

    Guild wars.

What if I dont want to be a dervish, paragon, warrior, ranger, assassin, etc etc?

What if I want to jump?

What if I want a flying mount?

Well if I had to ask these questions I wouldnt have ever played that game

This game has more possibilities than most offer if you can find a game with exactly what you want then play that.

Honestly did you think this question through?

I've played the beta for 2 months, and I can honestly say the powers and choices are much more versatile than you'd expect when looking at the listing.

As stated by someone else before me, your chosen travel power comes with a whole bunch of additional powers, like dive bombing, altering gravity, "ramming moves" in superspeed, etc..

On top of that, once you hit lvl 10 you get a whole new batch of powers you can pick in the Iconics class (like deflection, hard light shield, freeze breath, lazer eyes, etc..)

And yes, each "powerset" is divided in 2 sets : Ice has a Cryogenics and Storm division for example. And those divisions are again divided in roughly 2 branches you can take (although you can easily mix and match if you want to).

Would it be nice to have more powers? Yes, of course. Any superhero mmo benefits from more powers obviously. But since they already have several sets nearly complete, it's only a matter of time before those get put in. Some sets that were discovered but could not be chosen yet are Light, Atomic, Earth and Electricity/Lightning.

Interestingly enough others were able to answer my question without being a smart ass about it ;)

I asked a question if things were suggested to be added in after as I did not follow this game too closely.

Your response had nothing to do with it and was just a reply for  the sake of posting a reply and being a smart ass about it.

Thanks for your input  or lack there of.

    Its a starting MMO...

If the MMO is a succes many more options will be added in the future....

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

  • ValquissValquiss Member Posts: 37

You're not wrong, that there can always be more, but speaking personally I'd rather have a limited number of options that are well balanced against one another and all viable, rather than a large number of inadequately tested and balanced options.  In the later case, while you technically have more content to choose from, in practice a large amount of it is marginalized.  And people who don't know enough to focus on the "good" powers end up playing badly gimped and they get frustrated and quit.

Shallow is the word and the main reason I won't buy this game I had high hopes for.  That and the annoying spam controller buttons till your hands cramp up and turn into the black claws of a crow.

Beginning MMO or not it is very shallow.  I would rather play CO or CoH then this and I don't even like those games either.  Could be due to it being a console game that it is so shallow, who knows.

Well to each their own and I wish you luck playing your games.  Me I like DCUO just fine and can't wait for tomorrow.

Shallow in comparison to...?   And explain what you mean by shallow exactly.   Also,  if all you were doing was "button mashing" without intent,  you were doing it wrong.

In comparison to lets see.... FFXI, EQ2,  CoH,  LOTRO.  Every one of those has depth of content and things to do.  Basically a WORLD feeling.  Show me where DCUO has that depth?  Basically I can get out of DCUO the same thing I can get out of God of War.  Both have rpg aspects and both have button mashing combo's etc.  Both have story.  Guess which one is better even though it's shorter?  GoW since I don't pay a monthly fee.  that and my hand doesn't cramp up AS MUCH playing it, lol.

Technically you don't pay a monthly fee at all because you don't play the game.  DCUO has a varied set of builds, plenty of longevity within collections,  PvP that was planned from the beginning unlike CoX, LOTRO or the others you mentioned,  feat hunting that further progresses your character, races, combat that takes actual skill, and the ability to have hundreds of players on the screen at any single time.

Because your hand cramps doesn't mean everyones does, nor does it mean the game is shallow.  The combat system is pretty in depth, as you have only a select amount of skills on your bar, and each attack has a counter attack associated with it.  Tactics are very important in combat, and while they play a part in other MMOs,  they are much less forgiving here because you don't have the buffer of turn based combat or skill recharges.   Group dynamics are very important,  and that was compounded by the latest changes where some roles could be very important if played well,  or absolutely useless if not played correctly.

Having more things to do doesn't give a game depth,  it gives the game time-sinks.   CO had crafting,  didn't mean that game had depth.  CoX had PvP, didn't mean it was worth playing, that it was balanced, or even fun.

Theres more than enough to do for a number of months just on what is there now,  but if its not for you, its not for you and I don't hold that against anyone.  Calling it shallow though,  I think it misrepresents the accomplishments this game makes.

I disagree.  We both see MMORPGs in a different light apparently.  That's fine.  I think having more things to do DOES give a game depth.  I'm an explorer/adventurer not a pvp/combat focused player.  The GOOD MMOs cater to both of us.  DCUO doesn't.  It only caters to you.  That's fine, I've got 3 or more games coming this year for me.  I just wanted to share that I WANTED a superhero MMO that isn't instanced/pvp/all about combat "world".  That's all.

I can respect that.  Some people require "downtime" activities apparently,  but I've played enough games with those, and it rarely added to my enjoyment,  though some games had some downtime activities I liked a lot, like the old SWG, or Vanguard, or Fallen Earth.  This is focused slightly differently at this time,  and I just don't see crafting and housing adding much of anything to the game world.

I'm hoping a game like SWTOR will be able to fill the exploration/adventurer side of me, as it sounds like they actually have systems in place to reward the curious.  DCUO is more for that skill based, online MMO itch that is in a tough place to scratch.  Global Agenda was great, but too limited,  DCUO seems to hit that spot for me.

While I respect that you're trying to stike a middle ground here, and I certainly agree with you that MMOs attract different kinds of gamers with different likes and dislikes, I fail to see how you're qualified to pass judgment on whether games which you enjoy and wish to endorse adequately cater to gamers who are unlike yourself.

There are games on your list I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.  I'm not saying you aren't enjoying them, but I'd really appreciate if you'd refrain from suggesting that I do enjoy them because it simply isn't true.  Yet I do enjoy DCUO quite a lot.  So please, avoid telling me what I must like and I'll avoid telling you what you must like.  I think I'm a better judge of which MMOs cater to me than you are.
