Group play is fun, especially with the roles. With a max group size of 4 you will want 1 dps 1 tank 1 healer and 1 controller ideally, but i've found that you can get away with 1 healer and 3 dps, or several other combos. And since any class can DPS its an interesting play on the typical mmorpg group system
I have 2 other friends (3 players in total) getting into this. Is group play sufficient or an after-thought like Champions Online? <---- Bad game.
Group play is important, especially at the higher levels with higher level content. Arenas, alerts and raids will all require group play. Much of the openworld stuff can be solo'd but having groups is a lot easier.
The group dynamic is important when you have players that know their classes well. Roles compliment eachother, but only when they are played correctly. The group dynamic is well done, it always was in DCUO, even after the mass nerfs they did to controllers, and threat increases to healers.
One way or another you are going to need groups to complete a lot of the content, so if you have a set of friends that you can group with and learn each others play styles and sets early on, the better off you'll be when you need to fight Bizarro, or do an alert.

Is it possible to group from level 1 to max with no penalities? Some games screw you over for grouping before raiding/instances.
And @ the difficulty comment. No, MMOs aren't difficult and will never be difficult. If I was looking for difficulty I would be back on StarCraft 2 going @ 150APM or SSFIV FADCing SRKs all over the place. GG

It is possible to group from level 3 forward, as you get out of the tutorial at level 3.
You can group from your first mentor mission, and if you all have the same mentor you all get credit for it. If you choose separate mentors you will all have to meet at that area, and you won't get the main quest reward XP, but you'll get headlines and feats for completing those missions. No penalties really.

Is there a sidekick/level pact perk similar to that of City of Heroes? The reason why I ask is because we all have school/jobs, it'd be a pain in the ass if one of us (*cough* me) ends up out leveing everyone and ends up screwed.
Well actually you progress fairly easily as you just play through the content, so its easy to play it casually, however i don't believe there is a sidekick system in place, or at least i didn't see one

There has been reported a sidekick element to the game, i just never saw it or tried to use it in-game so look for it when you play.
From 1-20 just about all the basic content is solo-able but its far funner to play with friends and doesn't slow down leveling. Just be certain to pick the same mentors to get the same missions.
As someoen else mentioned, Alerts, raids and PvP will require teamwork and a nice feature is the moment you group up, your mics go active and you can use the in-game voice feature to easily coordinate your attacks. But PLEASE adjust your mic level so it only turns on when you speak or turn on "Push to talk" or you'll annoy your friends with echos and background noise.

The Alerts (4 Mans) and Raids (8 Mans) are quite hard that much i do know, but thats about all I can tell you.
Actually the whole game including a lot of solo parts is much more challenging then most current MMO's
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
