It makes me sad that I won't be able to pilot a Y-Wing (and I know the Y-Wing doesn't fit into the lore for SWTOR), but couldn't BW at least allow us to choose which ship we want to pilot, instead of railroading us into class-specific ships?
Also, couldn't they come up with more than six, or eight (or however many) ships to choose from? SWG had an incredible number of ships that you could pilot. Come on, I crave freedom. Not railroads.
Sorry, I'm just a bit upset about the limitations this game is already proposing.

space combat was never intended to be a big part of the game as to why its probably the way it is. the ships are from that time period in star wars. if you want to pilot a Y-wing, SWG is waiting on you.
Gonna start off by saying these are just my opinoin/views
First off, i agree that i would like more ships and more of anything.
However to be fair.
SWG didn't start off with any space until an expansion. JTL
Second this isn't really star wars galaxies (thus it's hard to compare the two and say what one has the other should have the same of) they are focusing on the story aspect and less on space. However the ships that you do get are going to be customizable.

Keep in mind they did mention the play to include PvP space combat later. That being the case it's possible they will add additional ships later when the PvP is impleneted.
If all goes well with the game. A couple expansions down the road could include more space freedom. There could be more ships as well as Warzones with free flight combat with smaller ships as the story moves forward with the expansions.
But I would like to see a polished and complete ground MMO first. Then add on to the game in years to come.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

Good post OP and I think the basic answer comes to us when you consider the how's and why's, not to mention roles of the ships more.
The Jedi Ship will be given to you by the Order and so everyone having the same ship is almost a given. It would be nice to be able to "swap it out" later on though. Keep in mind though that Jedi are not supposed to be about material aquisition, so it may also be more "lore appropriate" if you can not. A similar situation presents itself at the start of a Sith's career, but it would make more sense if you could "swap it out" later on since power and prestige are so important to Sith.
As for the smugglers, you really would expect a freighter type design. It would need to be something that could take on a skirmisch or two, but still hold a lot of cargo for the whole buying/selling aspect of your characters life. A Bounty Hunter on the other hand would not need such a large ship and would be better with someting "just big enough to scrap with" and to hold a prisoner or two in. "Swapping" later on though would be appropriate for both classes.
The Trooper's ship, is mostly utilitarian in design. Again, it will be given to you by a large organization so that makes sense. Speaking from experience in the military, I can tell you that flashiness is not desirable. A good punch, armor, and a few surprises are always nice though. "Swapping it out" later on would also be appropriate since with rank come privileges. Similar points of view goes into the Imperial Agent, but "swapping it out" later on to avoid easy recognition and a little extra stealth would be appropriate too.
I think the idea of these ships is to provide a link to the future without directly copying it. My personal hope is that we will not only get to name the ship and decorate the interiors, but decorate the exterior as well. If nothing else, let us change the color scheme to personalize it. I also think that they will be adding more ships in the future, ship based PvP would also be insteresting, and has been talked about. I also fully believe they wil be adding more classes to the game. Time will tell though.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Yup. This 'Star Wars' game is more about 'Land Wars' than any credible space combat.
...if PVP is implemented.
If you want ot simply fly a Y-wing i can probably point you in the direction of multiple Star Wars starship games... This is an MMORPG, remember. Not a SW space sim.
Thanks all for the info. I will still be glad to play a solid and polished SW MMO. I just hope it doesn't end up like Mass Effect where your ship is just a zone between missions.
Even if it is, I'll still try the game out.
SWG didn't actually have that large of a selection. 2-4 ships per profession+ class multiplayer ship. Unless you wanted to pilot utter junk, the very best ships would always vastly outdate everything else. Also, you could only pilot ships within your profession.
Your ship is also where your companions stay and do their crafting, it's also where you can pick another companion if you wanted. If you played any of kotor, then your familer with how the ship works. It's used to go to other planets and for some in flight space shooting (was turrent in kotor, it's tunnel here), and crafting.
However in this one you can customize it and bring people in to show it off.

Not much to worry about with the vast ammounts of collateral and content the Bioware guys have produced it looks as though we will all have way too much to do without getting concerned about features that were never promised.
I think we all have a l;ot to look forward to some of the worlds just look phenomenal.

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
Depending on how strong your need for "RPG" is, there are a number of MMO space games around, many of which are small and need players:
Taikodom, Black Prophecy, Jumpgate Evolution, Vendetta Online, and Jumpgate all exist right now or are supposedly due for release soon, and all let you fly your ship to a greater degree than EVE (which is the biggest, deepest and arguably best space game around right now).
Um think your getting muddled.
SWG had no profession restrictions in relation to ships they did have faction restrictions.
Each faction had around 6 ships then a POB then a gunboat there was also a number of ships that where cross faction like the JSF Bellbalub etc
Very very few ships got much use though as they are simply gimp.
JTL is stil feckin awesome
Ships in SWTOR will serve as two things. First, as your home/base of operation. This includes your crafting hub. Second, it will determine what avatar you see when (if) you play the "tunnel shooter" mini-game in space. Beyond that, your ship won't have much effect on the game. For good or bad, that is the way it is.
Let's party like it is 1863!
I hate that you can't choose your ship and are forced to certain ship based on your class and ofcourse the ship assigned to BH is the most ugly one ... ugh
Not sure, last time I checked Daniel came up front saying it was a misunderstanding. They unveiled space ships and customs armors at E3 and people melted both. clicky
Darhhater: You mentioned customization, and that it is a huge part of all the marketing that we see with The Old Republic. You mentioned that each class will get their own ship, and you actually mentioned it in the demo that all the ships will be customizable, so that one Smuggler ship is not identical to another Smuggler ship, in regards to the things that go with it?
Erickson: No. Actually, I think that is where some of speculation got thrown out there, because we did two demos back to back. We did the demo on the ships and then we did the demo on the class customization and people merged them in their brains.
Darhhater: Good to know, interesting clarification.
Erickson: We have made no announcements or no discussion about ship customization"
However I'd say we're going to have components upgrades that don't show off, so the whole ship looks might be static: clicky
Erickson: The more difficult things, the more tactical things... let's say, if you're going to be upgrading your ship, if you're going to be doing any of that stuff, and you're really into space combat that's something you're going to be deciding to go do.
Apart the lack of 3D movement in the space shooter it's disappointing that not only you can't choose your space ship but also we're going to fly mobile homes not smaller fighters ones or both
Finally for don't forget the space shooter might not be that much optional Clicky @1:44
Erickson: Not sure right now it will be completely optional
Oh well, thanks for the correction. Still a chance, but i won't mention it anymore as a feature until more proof comes out
In my defense this was the line i was going under when making that comment

If they have new ships for the classes I imagine they will be for later in the game, say, after the storyline quest for your class have been outleveld. That way having a different ship will not throw scripts out of whak.
Just think though ... having new ships to work for at the end game could be pretty cool. Imagine going on a facility Raid of some sort and coming away with a new starship for your crew as loot.
There wasn't much space combat in any of the movies, either. Usually one big scene and one smaller scene per movie. The rest took place planteside.
As for the OP, Y-Wings and Ties don't belong in this time period and this was never going to be swg 2.0. The fact is, while sometimes enjoyable, most people in swg spent their time with the ground game. There were very few people who regularily played the space portion, mostly because it ended very repetitive with the same bare bones (dev made) content the rest of the game had.

They've already said there will be pvp. Try again.

If you don't mind I'd appreciate a link, as from all I read/watched about TOR specifically denies space PVP. It was guessed by the journalist in the first article of the space shooter and has been denied by the devs later on.
