Long read.. sorry..

I noticed this game while looking through Justin.tv, saw a stream and almost automaticly started trolling saying, "is this WoW?," or, "did they upgrade WoWs graphics?." Becuase lets be honest, when first looking at this game the User Interface is a direct clone of a World of Warcraft Addon...

Even watching the game I couldn't stop getting pist off about how the game plays exactly like it, I first started picking on the quest system, Pick up "!," gother some idiot NPCs dog shit then return to the, "?," to get your 1000 experience, so innovative, so refreshing, right?

And the Animation... the Dancing is pathetic, even the mounts look sad, I could animate better in grade 10 computer class, I don't understand if they just put the intern on half this crap or what..

The PVP Instancing is another direct clone of WoW, instanced and complete utter shit.

A friend sent me and girlflriend beta VIP access..  We took it lightly, we were laughing at the game as much as we were laughing with it, mainly at the things that we noticed are just directly copied out of WoW but given different names.. things like, "shadow bolt," being named, "void bolt.."

Regardless.. The Rift system is neat, "neat.." as in, neat like some of the WoW quests they seem to try to hard to make. I don't want to entirely judge the Rift system yet, I can see some really cool things that they could do with that system but every part of me is throwing up warning flags on how anoyying that shit is going to get after the, "neat," factor wears off.

However... After we calmed down abit on the jabs at the game for its faults we started to actually enjoy it, I have played many MMOs.. Everquest 1, Dark Age of Camelot, and Warcraft being the most played and have lately gotten sick of MMOs in general.. Mainly because it is like MMO developers are just trying to get a peice of Blizzard's pie.

But like I was saying, after we stopped making fun of the game we actually liked it, we started just noticing things that we found better, graphics being one obviously, but smaller things like how cool our characters looked off the bat.. they didn't have that childish look that even a level 80+ would forever be forced into having in Warcraft. Or things like spells coming from the staff, and not the avatars stomach(?), or how the animation of each weapon or offhand you have equiped is different, if you have a book equiped your character animates to look into the book and then cast the spell.. or salvaging armor to get iron bars.. or my girlfriend finally getting her way of being a necro/healer class.. I could name tons of moments we said, "oh cool," but I think you guys who didn't play this game should see them for yourselves..

In the end all I am saying is try it before you judge it, we laughed at this game all day only to prebuy it at the end of the day for the things it did better then WoW. The game took elements that were good in a bunch of games and seemed to have put them together in a nice little package..

At the very least.. $50 bucks can get me a good dinner, if I get 2 days of enjoyment out of this game, it paid for itself. And if it comes down to me playing this or WoW while I wait for GW2, Rift wins by a landslide. It isn't even close to what I want in a MMORPG, but I can't afford to hire an entire team to make me a real MMORPG apparently, so I guess I'm stuck with this half assed version of a Next Gen MMORPG.

While there was a lot of negativity in that post, I do agree that Rift did rub off on me for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned.  Although, about comparing it to WoW... I don't know.   It's another fantasy mmorpg.  How much can you not "rip off" other fantasy mmo's out there with out going to an entirely different genre?  Think about it, crafting/pvp/dungeons/raids/quests and how you pick them up... unfortunately I feel the way these are done now are pretty decent.  The only thing you can improve on would be graphics/char. animations and story/lore.  I also like the rifts spawning all over the place, even though that can become a bother.

If you're looking for a mildly different approach to the same thing, Rift has something for you.  If you're looking for something completely new... I guess keep waiting?

On a different note: Terra has an interesting approach to combat (not a new one, but still different) which is getting my attention...

The game plays nothing like World of Warcraft. The UI just looks like it, slightly (bags+player frame+chat). It plays like Warhammer Online, considering it's using the same exact engine.

I have played over 20 MMos in the last years, and even played Wow for several. I find it funny how everything is a rip-off of Wow...when wow is a rip-off every other MMO. O.o

I cannot think of one thing Wow has done that is original, and not a part of another game that did it first, maybe not better, but at least 1st.

Wow was originally the 1st Warhammer game, they just renamed some stuff when the deal fell thru. The quest system was a copy of the EQ system. i could go on and on. The point is how can you copy that wich is a copy of everything else?

The only thing I can think of thats original is the Raids. They are fun fights and moslty there own.

World of Warcraft, no, Warhammer, yes. They might as well have called it Warhammer 2.

OK here is how I see it.  Rift to me was like a bad date.   You take the game out on a date and found out that you had nothing in common.  So then I took it out for 3 more beta dates.

I have come to the conclusion that me and rift have nothing in common,  no matter how many more beta dates are left, there is nothing for me to fall in love with.

I sure ain't spending 50 bucks for a date for 30 days hoping that I might fall in love.

Sorry rift was just a bad date  time to move to the next one.

OP rageing and his only reference being WoW as if it invented anything in mmo's (actually it didn't invent anything, other mmo's innovate and Blizzard has more money from its other games to implement and polish stuff), shallow comments, rage against developers, and finally buying Rift, eh... And hiring a team just to create for *you* a *real* mmorpg, lol ?

    Fail post is fail.

Yeah, because Blizzard never ever cloned anything ;)

It's impossible for the majority of this community not to take any game that releases in this genre seriously. Mmorpgs are life blood to these people, in their minds anything can be transformed into a mmorpg and should. If a game releases that threatens their games population they will fight tooth and nail to sway anyone that will listen from that new game. Rift threatens anyone that plays war, lotro, wow, AoC or anyother themepark released since 2000 through a polished and well executed experience and this gets their panties in a twist. So they lay the bullshit on thick hoping people are stupid enough to listen. I'm honestly tired of it all. Coming here trying to discuss games with these people is just exhausting because they act as if it's life or death instead of a meaningless video game intended to kill time when we have nothing better to do.

A healthy approach to MMORPGs these days. Expect a month or two of fun, casual gaming. But not much more.
