Im Amazed..... NOT!!!
WoW suits even my dog gameplay, so I reccomend it
(Yes I let him play WoW, while I play more challenging games, so he won't disturb me)
Welcome, both of you. There are many great MMORPG's out there, a good way to get started is to read the pinned thread on the top of the general discussion forum, title Free MMORPG/MMOG's and choose some from there that seem interesting. You'll eventually find the kind of game you personally enjoy, and you wont have to use money while you're doing it. Also, take advantage of the free trials on the site, they are some of the more popular games.

My favorites are asheron's call and asheron's call 2. I don't like WoW because it's just too simple. I don't like guild wars because it's not a very long term game unless you love to pk. Most other mmorpgs are just everquest clones, which I don't like at all.
I will recommend some games for you to try as I know all of them through beta testing or subscriptions.
First and foremost stay away from all Asian made or themed games like Saga of Ryzom, Final Fantasy XI, and the likes they are complete garbage.
Try these out for starters, do the 1st free month or the 14 day trial to see if you like them.
Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online SE, Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot or RYL. Free to play online games would be Knight online and Guild Wars
Those are some pretty good titles but it really depends on what genre you prefer. Do you likie Sci-Fi, fantasy or war? I would recommend World War 2 Online but since it appears you are new to MMORPG's I do not recommend you try that title as it has a steep learning curve.
Games to stay away from:
Project Entropia, again Saga of Ryzom, Final Fantasy XI, The Matrix Online, EVE online, Horizons, Ragnarok, Anarchy Online to name quite a few of them.
My 2 pennies:
If you want a good overall game that is very newbie freindly, you can't go wrong with WOW. It's easy to learn and get into and it runs well on less powerfull machines. I played it for awhile and enjoyed it. It's very solo friendly so if you don't have time to look for a group you can still log on and get something done.
Another game that no one has mentioned is City of Heros. It's also pretty fun and easy to get into. Plus, it has a very unique setting (comic book style super heros). One great thing about it is that you never have a hard time finding a group, which makes it alot easier to learn the game.
Guild wars would also make a good entry into the world of mmo's, simply because there is no subscription fee. that way you aren't commited to the game for a number of months like you would be in other mmo's.
Other than that you might check out eq2, asheron's call2 or star wars galaxies. All those are fairly newbie friendly and are fun to play in their own right. (Though some around here would flame me for saying so)
As of right now, my all time favorite mmo has been Dark Age of Camelot. Though I haven't played it in quite some time and I've heard that alot has changed. I normally don't care for pvp but, in this game, I couldn't wait to get into it. In my mind it is the only game that I have played where pvp makes any sense whatsoever.
I believe you can play anarchy online for free right now so you might want to look into that. Though it's not newbie friendly at all. When it came out years ago, it was virtually unplayable. Over the years it has turned into a very successfull game.
Now pay close attention. If you listen to nothing else I've said, just listen to this: Avoid Lineage 2 like the freakin plague. I've played alot of MMO's in my day and that one is by far the worst. Don't get suckered in by the admitedly beautiful graphics. Underneath that pretty vernear is the most pointless waste of time known to man. It takes forever to level up and until you are suitably powerfull you will get ganked by every 12 year old punk you come across. Ofcourse you're free to make up your mind for yourself. Just don't say I didn't warn you.
Very good advice if you want to surround yourself with idiots. Don't listen to this guy unless you want to be uber leet man with all kinds of gear so you can be the internet skillz master, since that's all th egames recommended there are about.
Try the free trials of as many as you can. Spend a week or two with each, and decide which is worth your money.
Bite me, Turbine.
i think that RS is a decent, free, 3D, wb-based MMORPG

I like certain aspects of WoW alot, however when it comes to keeping me interested for long periods of time nothing comes close to DAOC. It has the best PvP of any game out.
