I beta'd, and loved it

If you look at my beta experience posts on here, you will see that most people think I am negative, or even trollish in the way that I get put off by lame beta's, but this game has me singing praises for once.

I don't want to get into the details of the game, but many of the mechanics are very cool, the game runs really well on my 9800GTX, which was a concern.

The classes are great, and I look on pvp with modest enthusiasm.

Reminds me alot of how I would have liked WAR to turn out, but this is actually well done.

Played to max level on a rogue melee ***little gimp atm*** but it was still a very good time.  I love what they have done with the soul combinations and abilities.

Played to low 20's on a cleric, which was a blast, and I found a great deal of balance, yet confidence in a build.

If you ever played a sorc in WAR, then bring your hurt feelings to this game, and you will get the game you hoped WAR would be.

If you played a witch hunter, just keep playing WAR cause it won't get better for you here.

All in all, it was a great beta weekend, the zones, missions, and rifts were all in perfect working order, and the game has a beta polish that reminds me of LOTRO at launch.

Mark your calendars, I am actually pleased with a company for once!!

    Same...

Participated in the last 2 beta events, and was pleasantly surprised with how much fun I had, and how into it I got. It's nothing ground breaking, or mind blowingly amazing, but it is a very nice, tight, well made game with lots of fun / replayability factor.

As the OP said, the class system is extremely versatile, so developing characters is lots of fun. Quests are everything we're used to with 'kill 10 of x', fed ex, and what have you, and being on rails with quests leading you from area to area, but it doesn't feel tedious. The rifts and invasions running around certainly add a sense of danger, which in it's own way adds a layer of difficulity to an otherwise very easy mode questing system, but easy is relative, and that's just my opinion. Also, it is beta, and they rail us because they want us to test what they need tested, so perhaps after release the world will open up a little more and there will be more freedom, and I'm sure they'll tweak XP, lvl'ing speed, and quest difficulity more.

PvP is ok... More work will go in there as well I'm sure. I really wish there was an open zone, with objectives that have effects in the world. That's more my thing.

Crafting, economy, all similar to what we're used to.

I had lots of fun though. More than I can remember playing an MMO in some time. 3 of my friends were in the beta with me, and we will all be picking this game up when it releases. Is this THE game that we'll be playing for the next 2 years hardcore? No, but it's good enough for all of us to be missing it now. Yeah we're still sub'd LoTRO founders, but what we really want to play now is Rift.

Also, never crashed, or lagged a single time nor did I encountered  a single broken quest. VERY polished beta. Runs fantastic on max settings on my PC (GTX 260 - Phenom X4 965 - 4GB - Solid State HD) AND.... A mature, friendly community.

If you like a game that takes the best elements of WoW / EQ2 / LoTRO / Warhammer and nicely blends them into one game, you'll love Rift.

I have to echo the op's sentiment. I often feel like a jaded old mmo player these days who does nothing but grumble about games. But having played the last two Rift beta's it has been a great surprise to see such a highly polished game that is so much fun to play. It has become a definate purchase for me and whilst I won't pretend there aren't issues with the game, it is certainly my current best hope for a new mmo to call home. I'm very impressed with what I have experienced so far and kudos to Trion for what they managed to put together :)

Agreed. A quality MMO that's a ton of fun to play. I purposely plowed through content because I wanted to save the story/NPC chatter for launch.

Rift would be good if it was released in 2005.

As of now, WoW simply outdoes Rift at everything that matters. The questing, in particular, isn't even close. Rift bored me out of my mind. I guess Cataclysm has spoiled me.

It's the bomb !  Hmmm.... time to pre order.

Thanks for your input.  Now I'm sure others that have played the game will be swayed by that compelling argument.

I have to say, I have done a 180 and it's my turn to eat some crow.

Beta 1 and 2 bored me, and I was arguing with the other naysayers how Rift was just a clone and had no innovation, blah blah. But I decided I was being cynical and not giving the game a fair shot. After all when you've been playing MMOs for a long time, most of the mystery is gone. I don't think I'll ever recapture that first 'magical' experience.

Anyway, I stuck it out and decided to get 'off the rails' for Beta 3 and just go exploring, and fully participate in the Rift invasions. Tried the cleric and mage archetypes. Hmmm...that was fun! Hey maybe Rift is not so bad. By the end of the Beta I was into it, but still on the fence.

Beta 4 - massive invasions, more GM interaction, Warfronts...yeah, this IS fun. Tried out the rogue archetype. Holy crap I really like this game. Got my ass kicked numerous times by elite invasion mobs running all over the map. Nowhere is safe, I love that. Came back from AFKing a few times to find a Rift or Foothold had spawned around me and I was dead :> Formed 40-man raid groups to take down the gigantic Tree invaders. Ventured into Realm of the Fae, which was just very cool for a beginner dungeon. The blizzard area? Now that's creative, loved it.

So Beta 4 won me over and I have pre-ordered. I recommend anyone who tried the Beta and was bored to give it a little more time. The game does open up after level 15 significantly. The Gloamwood area? Beautiful, challenging, and creepy at the same time.

Edit: I forgot to add, as a beta tester the game was surprisingly free of major issues. I reported a few things I found, but nothing major. Certainly nothing game-breaking. Trion did a good job with their systems and I think the launch should go well, barring the usual issues of server over-crowding which I don't hold against any company without a Magic 8 ball.

Then why even bother posting anything at all? If you didn't like it, just go back to WOW and have a good time there. The rest of us will be playing this. Some of us may even be Ex-WOW players looking for something a bit different to play and this seems to offer that, If you enjoy WOW better then go back there and play instead of reading about Rift.

The game just looks so polished!! I bet after a smooth launch Trion will put the team to work on new content or xpac. Thats the benefit to a polish game at launch, they have more time for new content and can start working on it sooner..

    Rifts future looks very promising....!

The balanced (I didn´t say positive) opinions give me high hopes for Trion´s other MMOs in development. It seems they are able to make a game with massive battles.

As for Rift itself I don´t know, I didn´t play it yet. Some things I read about scare me a little off. Let´s see what happens when this game goes gold.

I went into the most recent beta knowing next to nothing about the game. I'd seen some movies and screenshots on MMORPG and thought I was about ready to try something new. Luckily the accepted me and I had a great weekend. Yes it's a lot like many MMO's i've played - It has parts of Aion (character generation), EQ2 (Collections) and a bit of LOTRO's lore feel. The graphics are great and although you could argue a game like AoC has superior I imagine that Rift's may scale better. (Haven't played AoC recently so don't know for sure).

So having no attachment to the game I was really pleasantly surprised. The world lore was quite interesting and an area where the game is definitely superior to the initial experiences you receive in WoW and even LoTRO (although I remember really digging the hobbit intro the first time).

Beta ended and I found myself wishing i'd managed to find a few more artifacts hidden around the place and helped close a few more rifts. I'll definitely be keen to jump straight back in for the next beta, and i'm positive i'll try Rift out for at least a month or two and see where it goes.

It's been a while since an MMO has sucked me in right out of the gate like that. Certainly Cataclysm didn't do it and I just felt I'd wasted my money to try it again after all those years.

Definitely keen to try some pvp. Many of the skills and talents I had were just begging to be applied to some Guardian!

PS - if you are in australia and playing future beta's I'm "Bronxor" on Wolfbane server. Defiant to the end! Hah.

    PPS - Fire Squirrels FTW!

    i loved it too,

only thing bothered me was the animation weren't so fluid like WoW , i think they didn't use motion capture.

also the sound effects werent good or missing from characters, hopefully only in beta.

requires high end pc to play this game other wise playing on lower quality makes it look bad too, they will sure miss lots of customer because of this.

PvP is okay, there are two maps available one like warsong and the other arathi basin.que very fast as its cross realm.

Definitely agree there. One of the things I submitted feedback on. It's not a deal breaker though.

I realy love rift beta and game is just beautiful and great to play. But i am woried a bit about endgame. I'm quite sure Trion will release some interesting Raid dungeons, but beyond that, how different will it be from WoW when we will hit lvl 50. Not that i would prefer WoW endgame, contrary, i got realy bored of it.

So my main question is, will it be enough unique?

But maybe i'm just assuming to much to fast.

You'd be surprised how many people I know with high end rigs that still turn the graphics down on multiplayer games, for example. Not everyone is into eye candy. I was able to run the game on ultra with an E8500 and a 4870. Far from high end. At least Trion provided plenty of options for graphics tweaking.

I've only played beta 4, but was pleasantly SURPRISED. Last time an MMO gave me that 'loving this' feeling was DAOC and Anarchy Online (bugged but very diverse back then) back in 2001, I'd played DAOC for a number of years so no MMO to date has really given me that wow-factor. I'm actually a bit shocked, I didn't think an MMO could be so exciting after I burned so many years on DAOC and lets face it, nothing is going to beat that for PVP/PVE goodness. I've played so many MMO's and been in so many betas, I was actually going to give up playing MMO's as I felt nothing was ever going to give me that enjoyment I found in DAOC. You get sick of searching and wasting money on games you'll eventually dislike.

But RIFT has been an absolute joy. I've not purchased the game and I doubt I'll be playing anytime soon, saving for a holiday with the family. So, I'm not saying this because I'm a fanboy or because I've slapped down a pre-order and singing the games praises. I don't do hype, I don't hype up games, if I like it, I recommend it, if I don't like it, it drops off my radar and I move onto something else, I don't try to sabotage a game just because I don't like it.

But this game gave me that wow-factor I've only ever felt way back in 2001 with DAOC, Planetside in 2004 also gave me that MMO goodness you rarely find, but nothing since then has really shone a light on the MMO industry. I'm eagerly awaiting beta 5 in a couple weeks time, hopefully I'm picked. ;)

You bring up a good point, and one I didn't think to check: how well the game scales.

Some games look alright, and if you have a really great system, they look a little better. Other games look amazing with the right hardware, but look wretched if you don't. Hopefully I'll have a chance to test for myself in the next beta, but how well does the game do lower quality? Has anyone run it on low settings?

  • AchillezAchillez Member UncommonPosts: 105

I think the graphics scales pretty darn good. I run the game at 30+ FPS on Ultra with a lonely GeForce 250 GS. Come large raids, the only thing I need to switch off is shadows and I'm golden again. HIgher end systems will get you more FPS on Ultra but I find 30 to be plenty for me and 40+ if dropped to High if I really needed it.

Shadows in the game seem to eat up lots of FPS, which is really typical for any game. I easily gain 10-15 FPS by simply shutting them off temporarily. But having them on or off is like night and day. The games lighting is amazing and so with the shadows on, everything looks 10x more amazing. In raids, as a healer, I'm not looking at the shadows or lighting so gimme my FPS. Shadows off. haha

I also have done the "180 degree" turn about on this game.

While I thought that beta phase 1&2 were kind of dull, Beta 3, and this past Beta 4 were great!

As stated in other posts, the PvP aspect of the game still needs some work (targeting response), and a bit of class ballance.

Other then that I find the game to be more then worthy of a look and purchase.

There wasn't much of a difference visually from low to high. On ultra however the game looks crazy with high textures, view distance, full screen FX, and high shadows. Honestly though I play on two systems. A laptop that chugs a bit on high and a desktop that plays on Ultra and due to the quality of the game it self and a really nice artstyle I don't prefer one over the other.

I have a 2.4ghz e6600 with a gtx260. I run the game at 1680x1050 on medium settings with HQ rendering on. By my lonely I get 30 fps, anywhere near large masses of other players I get 10 fps.

On Medium Settings with HQ on the game looks decent. If you shut the HQ render off the game looks bad. Ultra is more of the pretties.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
