Why does it seem that the answer to most criticisms about the game are met with the excuse that "this is an action mmo". As if that somehow changes everything about the game or invalidates the games short comings.
Aside from the game replacing autoattacks and hotkeys with rapid mouse clicks, the core systems of this game is exactly the same as a typical mainstream mmo. Quests, talent trees, mana/health potions, instanced dungeons/raids, repeat missions for tokens to buy tiered armor sets, etc.
I will say thank you to the OP for solidifying the fact that I will not waste money on this garbage. I played the beta and had mixed feelings on it, but I'm not about to drop $50 on this game.
Do you like superheroes/DC comics in general/action based games? Yes? you'll like this game.
Do you demand in a newly released MMO, extensive crafting/open ended class system//elves and pixies in a generic LOTR style world/click and wait abilites? Yes?, you'll hate this game.
I'm getting a bit fed up with this site polarised views from people screaming how crap this game is when they aren't going to like it in the first place, based on the above.
Wait for Rift or something, the rest of us will be busy enough having fun with this thank you very much
That sentence and that word really do not match up in your post. As this has to be one of the most idiotic posts I have read in a long long time.
Can you be any more generalising and polarising yourself?
Just to give you an example. I have been playing Fallen Earth since Early Beta till today. It offers extensive crafting. Open ended class system. FPS style combat, including click abilities. Non generic world! And so far I have yet to run into an elf or a pixie!
And so are there plenty of other MMO's out there without elves.
You can have an action / FPS style oriented MMORPG game, with extensive crafting, depth, great vast gameworld, with varied missions/quests and enough content to keep people engaged beyond their first month.
As so far, those games you call out for being generic and elf / pixie based have been keeping people entertained for months to even years!
DCUO will have yet to prove that, now it's launched.
Oh jesus, okay I'll bite once because your crying amuses me.
a '/' tends to mean 'either/or', it doesn't mean, 'has to include all of this', if I wanted to to say a game needs all of those elements I would have used the word, 'and'. Try and read a post before you go off on rant mode yeah?
Okay I'll make it even easier for you. Basically if you want one of those above elements, (like for instance your beloved Fallen Earth, a sandbox MMO), your not going to like DC universe. If you want a MMO in a fantasy world, which may or may not include elves, (like WoW for example) regardless of whether it's a sandbox or not, (which WoW isn't),you won't like DC Universe Online.
Oh and for your information, I played EQ for 4 years and WOW for 5 years, so I'm not bagging on anyone whose played those I'm just stating a fact, there are pixies,(EQ2) and elves, (EQ2/WoW), in those sorts of games and certain people will look for lots of races in a fantasy world in their MMO's, thus they won't like DC Universe Online amongst other elements.
Does that make sense now or do you need a diagram? Oh and do yourself a favour and don't go around calling people idiots when you haven't even read a post properly. Oh the irony
Hmm, I will exclude F2P games of course. But I honestly cant think of any game I ever played from release that put me off 6 hours after purchase. I will get back to you if one pops up.
What MMO is your favorite?
Of all times its Dark Age of Camelot, lately I've also been into EQ2.
Do you prefer sadnbo themeparks or themeparks?
I thought I was a sandbox kind of guy but lately I have found joy in themeparks too. So I guess I like them both, depending on the game. I love Mortal Online but I also enjoyed Champions Online a lot.
OK first off, I am not playing DCU right now I am going to give it a couple months to let it hash itself out. BUT, the op is complaining about a game that is reptitive and there is no reason to pvp. Yet he says he loves mortal online. I played (past tense) MO including beat almost a year. The only reason I did is because the devs promised so many times it will change and be different. There are no real working dungeons, and you are literally playing with omly a couple hundred people online at a time. And if DCU does ot break after every patch then it is a step up from MO.

because they have no real argument and are grasping at straws.....
But I am a slow leveller, I have always been. I prefer to look around, try different things, read quests and do some PvP if possible. When I write this post I'm lvl 15.
I can't think of a single other MMO that someone got halfway to level cap on Day 1 after only playing six hours. Considering there is no crafting or no auction house, this is pretty sad.
I mean, there are only 15 more levels left of game. 30 days isn't gonna last that long unless people like PvP in console/arena type form.
I'm curious OP, did you play the beta and already knew what to do/where to go or was this your first blind trial playing?

It's not like this game is complete rocket science ya know. I can see players that have nothing else to play getting 10-15 levels in the first day.

First time I ever played it, I have looked at 1 or 2 videos before but it was pretty much one straight road. You dont even have to find NPCs to recieve quests, they just pop up in your journal making it super easy

Err, Guild Wars?
From the Guild Wars wiki:
"It is possible to reach level 20 in less than 2 hours."
Well this review opened my eyes, gonna cancel my sub now, thank you random stranger for your 6 hour assesment, you know what is best for me and this community.
Let me stop you right there. A review? knowing whats best for you and the community? do you know the concept of a "straw man argument"? I will quote it for you: "A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position." So basically stop making this post something it is NOT. Its a post in a forum, not an article written by someone claiming to be an review writer.
3/10 what caused you to be so generous?
Your review basically said you spent most of your time in the tutorial zone making multiple characters, you got nothing done and you really dont understand the game well enough to know to enjoy it, but you understand it well enough to trash it.
Perhaps, I got to lvl 15 which is not the entire game. But that was not my point was it? As I said I am a slow leveller, I like to explore, read, try different things etc. What I am saying with my post is that I found DCUO to be very boring for a player like me. I dont have to "understand" the game to write what my experience was like. Its not rocket science, it's a MMO based on DC Comics.
I cant believe people are stupid enough to buy games based on some random guys 6 hour review, but i guess sheep need to be led right.
1. Dont like the quests, what do you think they should be instead? Kill, gather, deliver, investigate, those are the basic quest layouts because thats all you can really do, that covers all tasks? But please give an example of what they should be instead, so you can revolutionize every other upcoming MMO by sharing with us your gems of wisdom.
Where does this anger come from? Take a deep breath and relax. Let us go through what I really wrote instead of the false statements you claim I wrote. I quote from my own post: "Quests. Yes most MMOs have the same type of quests, kill X amount, gather X amount etc and so forth. But DCUO isnt even innovate in creating the layout of quest areas or even differ a bit between quests." Do you see the difference? I am more upset with the layout of the actual areas. Not the quest type.
2.I know, tutorials are repetitive, good thing you only have to do them once.. yeah you should be able to skip it, but it lasts 10 minutes, 30 minutes is a gross exaggeration, even with the forced cut scenes it lasts 10minutes.
3. Open world pvp.... dont like it, easy fix, do i really need to say what it is?
Yes please do and PLEASE read my post a but more. You are just taking the two first sentences from each point and getting insanely mad for no reason. READ MY MOTIVATIONS.
4.Opening customization is poor, because this game is about costume collection, go farm, and after a few of those quests you have so much distain for an you will find more costume parts to expand your wardrobe, sorry they went the reverse of coX and instead of giving you all your parts upfront, they switched it and gave you some insentive to farm.
5. Now this is just nonsense, i wont even humour it.
Why? Because you think it got a good feel? Fine, I did say IN MY OPINION. I did not say, YOU SHALL ALL FEEL THIS WAY BECAUSE MY WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY!!! silly.
You basically did nothing in game, experienced no part of the game, forced yourself to play an aspect you clearly dont enjoy and then you call the game shallow?
Really wish it took more effort for someone to create a thread and call it a review.
I just wish you read my post and stopped making false statements you claim are my own. Really...
From the Guild Wars wiki: "It is possible to reach level 20 in less than 2 hours."
So, a F2P game you can hit in max in one day vs a game you pay $15/mo to hit max in a few days?
Not really a good advertising point.
Especially when Champions Online is going F2P itself, and you cannot reach halfway to max in the first six hours of gaming.
I'm just not understanding why this game is THIS light on content and prefers to have people be the content vs each other at endgame via PvP matches and duels.
alot of people are bashing and geting this game twisted...its more of an action game to be played on console and all they did is add a online element to it...its FAR from a true mmo ..just because its online does not make this a mmo lol..alot of these posts i bet havet even played or only played till like lvl 10...i personaly have DC and i think its great..great action / pvp FOR THE PS3 i really dont think this title is much of a pc game seeing that console games made for pc dont really do so well...if you bought this game for pc im sure your dissapointed...it was clearly more made for a console audience..and people keep compareing champ online to DC ..umm they both play totally differant..i wouldnt compare the 2 champs online is more mmo like ..DC ..far from it..but still a great ps3 title atm

I thought I was a sandbox kind of guy but lately I have found joy in themeparks too. So I guess I like them both, depending on the game. I love Mortal Online but I also enjoyed Champions Online a lot.
I'm kinda surprised you like CO but not this game. IMHO this game is CO with better combat and less customization.
Other than that, not surprised by your OP. This game is just combat, combat, and more combat. And even the best combat systems will get old after a while if that's all there is.

Of course its an MMO, its not an MMORPG but it is an MMO since its Massively Multiplayer Online.
No, it is billed as an MMORPG. By your definition I think you would lump every game with a significant online component as an MMO, which is just absurd.
Apart from resource files is there anything stored on your computer or is it all stored on a server? On a server, like a typical mmo.
Is there a subscription fee? Yes, like a traditional MMO
Do you advance your levels, get new skills, new gear, all in an environment with thousands of other players with whom you can group and do quests etc etc etc? Yes, again, like a traditional mmo.
What is there about this game that is not the same as any other mmo that is out there? Apart from DC Universe? Nothing, it is an mmo with a different combat model.
Now, is DCUO a game with a future etc? Dunno, not a game that I enjoy and one that I would never pay a sub fee for. It is, for me, a subpar game filled with the lowest common denominator of mmo gaming.
The graphics are pretty, there is no getting around that, the animations are fluid, the game runs damn sweet on my system. And there is something about the flight animations that really really is better than that in other super hero mmos. Character customization is good although it seems to me that the powers are a little off and very limiting. That, for me, is the extent of the good. Gameplay, questing, the meat and bones of mmos is where the game falls off for me. Plays like a cool console game that you might want to dink around in for a little bit, but there are far better super hero action games for varying systems that do not require a subscription fee to play.

What? According to my definition? its not my definition. Just look up MMO and see what games are MMOs. I dont understand what you are after here? You agree that DC is a MMO but you do bash my definition of MMOs?

This post cracks me every time I see it because the image in my head is of the guy playing 6 hours straight, then going "man that sucked" lol
and if it was the other way around and he only played 30 min or an hour or some small number you would be lolling because he "didn't play enough to judge the game"

Not from me. Remember that he posted this like 7-8 hours after release which is why I found it funny.
I know my brother who was in Beta played a grand total of maybe 5-6 hours and never touched the game again. For anyone who played mmo's in the last few years, this one brings nothign new to the table, it feels you playing the same game you played in the last 4-5 years but with a new skin. Might seems fun at first but the novalty feeling wears out real fast.
^ This, except 3 hours was where I drew the line. I knew I didn't like the game in my first day of beta, and I was in beta at tail end of beta, so if there were any patches, they'd already been updated.
And none of this, 3 hours isn't enough time to have an opinion... BS if I'm bored and not having fun after three hours, then I'm just not playing it anymore.

just out of curiosity, which starting area did you start in? Metropolis bored me, but i really liked the quests in Gotham
Metropolis, but once I got to lvl 15 I made a Villain who started out in Gotham, I agree it was better then Metropolis but just not enough
ok cool
