Well I am happy to see that I have learned my lesson and I will not even touch that game even under torture.

So they're spending more money and making a new game that you don't have to play, and could very well be good in the best case, worse case it could suck again and they eventually go bankrupt. I don't see the problem.

Some people act as if CO and STO were failures. As far I can recall they made back their development cost plus tons extra in profit. They were successes and are still up and running. Both are getting new content as well. Both have decent populations as well. Not overwhelming populations that World of Warcraft has. Sure they might have been aiming for that until reality set in but what they have seems to make them content without worrying about closing the games down. They've even taken steps with CO to get more to play them. So maybe population with that was lower then they'd like even with realistic expectations but it's still around.

What they need to learn is to not over promise and to have more content at the higher levels. What else do they have to learn really?

Nah, I really don't want to get started on Cryptic... I don't like haters, I won't turn into one.

They're a company that develops games.  That's what they do.  As long as they have funding to do so, it's what they'll keep doing.

Are you also surprised when a grocery store buys more food to replace what it just sold last week?

  • TheLizardbonesTheLizardbones Member CommonPosts: 10,910

They keep making money on their shortened development cycle, why wouldn't they make another MMO? They probably make the money they spent on developing both of their titles on box sales of STO by itself. I probably won't buy it or play the new one, but it'll be interesting to see what it turns out to be.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Champions Online was still fun for a month which is as much as I'd ask for from a game. I also got a good month from Vindictus (not Cryptic). Not every MMO needs to be a 5 year investment like WoW to be fun.

Star Trek Online did pretty much suck though..

To be honest, I think Cryptic can be succesfull with this new MMO they are working on assuming that:

    1. They are developing their own IP as they were burned by Marvel, and Star Trek requires too much effort to make accurate based on its huge IP.

    2. Building a F2P MMO from the ground up.

Granted i really do wish them to do better but i also wish they would spend a bit more time content wise on a game.

Until they can show players they can make a quality MMO they will always be sub-par MMO studio.

I don't claim to have a crystal ball or anything, but in the past, Cryptic uses their same CO engine and tries to pass it off as something else in their 18 month development cycle.

They've burned to many people to succeed in a future MMO.

Cryptic has as much of a chance of creating a AAA quality MMO as Stevie Wonder has of winning the Daytona 500.

It is rather clear that they mean the already announced online version of Neverwinter nights.

They have already worked longer than 18 months on it and since it is a CORPG they might actually have the chance to pull this one off. It is a lot less work to make a CORPG, the entire Guildwars with all campaigns have every single quest written by 4 guys.

And the fact that players can create their own content in it actually solves their usual problem of very little content as well.

So for the first time am I actually somewhat positive to a Cryptic game in development, it is almost impossible to mess up a Forgotten realm MMO.

Edit: Didn't ex president Bush wave to Stevie?:D

Ok that is one thing I *don't* want to see Cryptic doing, wasting IP licenses with their games. While I said CO was fun I do still find Cryptic's games rather lacking overall and don't think they will be able to make a really good MMO, so why waste the NWN license..

Oh awesome. I can't wait till they unveil the option to lifetime sub for this unknown project.  Need to get your priorities right of course :P

    Can't wait :P

Damn i had the same thing in my mind.

I feel like ips are getting wasted under the name of cryptic.

This studio just sucks and while neverwinter is a huge ip under the d&d rules cryptic is going to make this game loose it's ip strength.

Bye bye neverwinter you chose a wrong mentor

In my eyes Cryptic and NC Soft are two companies that can have each other.  Never again. Never.

They won't be able to make NWN into a really good MMO because its not an MMO. Its a coop RPG. They are setting their sites a little lower with that one which is exactly what they should be doing. Besides, right now it looks like Cryptic will be the industry leader in user generated content once they have the Foundry and NWN released.

I imagine they'll be gearing up the hype train and trying to sell life time subs to the suckers that get caught up in the hype before release.

Cryptic has awful support and their games are shallow and arcadey as far as MMO's go.  I don't usually judge a game before I've seen details about it, but I won't be touching this one with a ten foot pole unless it is everything Cryptic's previous offerings weren't AND they get some support that gives a crap.

  • ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

I'll judge things by itself. Cryptic has done also some good things in STO and CO. While generally not so thrilling games, I don't regard them as total failures either.

If it's like STO, it will be good for 1 or 2 months and most people will quit.

  • HyanmenHyanmen Member UncommonPosts: 5,357

Cryptic is like one of the companies putting out CSI, hospital drama and reality tv-copies to grab quick cash on lieau with the original series' success.

So let me get this straight: they are working at NVM which isn't finished yet and are working on another game again? Jesus christ get out of the industry you guys don't know how to make REAL mmos. Wonder if some people might be stupid enough playing their craptastic games.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Of course they made back their costs, it's not hard when you're spending less on the entire development than your estimated box sales.
