What are we looking at w/ DCUO

HavepieHavepie Member UncommonPosts: 10

Hi Everyone,

I am an MMO addict, I love them.  After years of EQ2 and then jumping around to every other disapointment out there my search continues for the game I am looking for.  While I am skeptical about DCUO, There is no reason why it cant be what I am looking for.

Some Questions: Anyone feel free to answer any oft ehm that you can.

Are we looking at a normal MMO with just a different game setting?

Are there Tanks, Healers, DPS, normal dungeon crawl/grind groups?

Is it just a clone of City of Villians/Heros?

Is there gear? (Armor, Weapons, Jewelry etc.)

Is there experience/Levels?

Tradeskills?

Open World PVP?

End game content? (I.e. challenging group dungeons, raids, an alternate advancement system fora fter you are max level)

I am not looking for a WOW clone, Ive never played WOW, but I played the games WOW ripped off.  But with that said, I have played a lot of MMOs, and I know what I am looking for.

Thanks for the insight everyone.  I miss MMOing, unfortunatly after 7 years of EQ2, there just wasnt enough to keep me driving.  But I think 7 Years is pretty impressive for any game to keep someone's attention span.

The combat is what sets it apart from a lot of mmo's. Its fast based "twitch" action. CoH and CO are both just super hero themed WoW games in my opinion. DCUO has the quest chains you follow along just like the rest of them, the combat is where all the action and fast paced feel is.

There are tank/healer/dps group set ups but i havent done enough of those myself to give more detail on it. From reading about it they need some work done but i saw no issues when i did a few instances. People complain about tanks and healers not actually being able to play that role, most instances are probably zerg fests at the moment?

    Theres lots of gear.

    No tradeskills. Yay!

Yes theres open world pvp, pick a pvp server.

Really the combat itself is what sets this game apart from the others. Its very fun if you like that kind of combat.

By the way i played Diablo 2 for 5 years and recently quit WoW after 6. :p

No, it is more an action style combat with lots of clicking and "click combos" There are only 6 slots for powers and no auto attack at all.

Are there Tanks, Healers, DPS, normal dungeon crawl/grind groups?

yes and it is dependent on what power set you pick. IE you can't have Ice power set and be a healer.

Is it just a clone of City of Villians/Heros?

No, the character creator is very limiting and there are only 6 power sets. (fire, ice, mental, gadget, plant, and sorcery) You only get a 3 color pallet.

Is there gear? (Armor, Weapons, Jewelry etc.)

Part of what they claim is the object of the game, is the collection of new weapon and costume pieces as you battle so you can change the way your character looks as you get more xp. So for the most part you will not get to start out with the look you want. But maybe you can get something cool later.

    Is there experience/Levels?

Yes, but not for very long. They had people hitting the lvl 30 player cap on launch day....Everyone else can get there in a few days.

    Tradeskills?

    None. also no auction house.

    Open World PVP?

Yes, and unless you are inside a safe house you are open game 24/7. There is no "ganking preventions" mechanics at all.

End game content? (I.e. challenging group dungeons, raids, an alternate advancement system fora fter you are max level)

There are achievments in the game, but the endgame is mostly PVP and redoing the "alerts" over and over.

I am not looking for a WOW clone, Ive never played WOW, but I played the games WOW ripped off.  But with that said, I have played a lot of MMOs, and I know what I am looking for.

There is alot of debate on the lack of content. ALL the quests follow the same formula killX, retrieveX, gatherX, then enter instance and fight boss. Alot of the quests are exact clone whether you are a hero or villian, just a little differnent dialog and differnent person giving you the quests. Alot of repetitiveness all the way around.

Thanks for the insight everyone.  I miss MMOing, unfortunatly after 7 years of EQ2, there just wasnt enough to keep me driving.  But I think 7 Years is pretty impressive for any game to keep someone's attention span.

    Hey Guys,

    Thanks for the prompt feedback!

Couple of follow up questions.  You mention the gear is "Costume Pieces"  Does the gear provide stats/armor etc.? Or is it simply just vanity armor?  Same question for weapons.

Also.. Why would anyone ever pick anything than flight?!  Like i said, I played CoH and CoV, anything other than flight was just asking to get your hide tanned in PVP :-P  I know this game is different, but...

I found the transportation modes in DCUO to feel great and like an actual super power. I tried them all and speed is my favorite one even tho acrobatics is pretty kick ass. As far as pvp is concerned i dont know which id prefer, but i also think id do just fine in pvp with any transportation style.

The gear offers both stats and style.

However i disagree with thefur on being able to look how you want when starting out. Thats obviously a very bias opinion on his part. I was able to create quite a few characters exactly how i wanted to when i played the beta.

The costumes provide stats and looks, in the costume inventory menu you can lock in your looks and change them at any time depending on how many costumes youve picked up (looting).

As you progress you will gain a number of new costume pieces,  I have collected over 100 different costume pieces so far, and you can change your styles at any time without having to go through a tailor.   You can change your look regardless of your gear stats, so, eventhough new gear has a different look you can keep your old look if you like it better.

    Is there experience/Levels?

Yes, but not for very long. They had people hitting the lvl 30 player cap on launch day....Everyone else can get there in a few days.

The openworld PvP is pretty crazy,  but the combat system is skill based,  so even at level 10, you can put up a very strong fight and even win against someone twice your level.  Most of the time though you'll probably find yourself outnumbered,  as the PvP servers are packed.

End game content? (I.e. challenging group dungeons, raids, an alternate advancement system fora fter you are max level)

There are achievments in the game, but the endgame is mostly PVP and redoing the "alerts" over and over.

There are a large number of endgame missions.  I just reached level 30 yesterday afternoon and started doing some of them,  they are the most challenging group missions I've ever experienced.  The feats system is pretty much your alternate advancement system.  By completing feats you will gain skill points, which can be used to upgrade your characters skill like superspeed,  or two handed weapons.

End game raids/ alerts/ duos are all really tough,  but on top of that you'll find a large number of missions in the watchtower... some of them you have done before they just made them tougher,  and some you haven't done before, which still, will most likely still require a group.   Then you have your gear,  a few different tiers,  one for PvE and one for PvP,  and the gear will take at least a week to get a full set of tier 1 gear unless you play alot more than I did.  Gear will play a big part in your character,  but you'll notice the effects much more in PvE then in PvP.

If you know what you're looking for then this should be an easy decision.  It seems people don't like it,  like it but aren't willing to pay for it,  or like it a LOT,  and its surprising to see who ends up loving the game and not liking it, some of my friends who I've played with for years didn't like the game at all, while some of my other friends  can't get enough of it.

My answers are in green.  Thanks to The Fur for being honest in his answers,  no correcting needed, just some things I wanted to add.

some are just costume pieces (called styles) and some provide style and stats. You can also go in and equip and item with stats and then make it look like any style you have collected.

Thanks Masked, I know I have been critical of the game but you have to admit I have been honest :)

Yes.  They aren't layed out in quite the same way.  You'll port into an instance w/ your group, and there will be objectives.  As you complete these objectives, it will move on to the next "stage" in the instance, kinda like a Public Quest system in Warhammer.  There are tanks, healers, controller (CC/debuffs/energy regen), and DPS. And yes, you need those roles for the harder content... doing even the normal instances at the higher level are a PITA w/out a well balanced group doing their job properly.

Is it just a clone of City of Villians/Heros?

In some ways, it is a Super Hero MMO after all.  It's sufficiently different, and out of CO/CoX/DCUO... its by far the most unique.

Is there gear? (Armor, Weapons, Jewelry etc.)

Yes, and the gear changes your appearance.  You aren't locked into an appearance though, any appearance you've unlocked is selectable at any time.  There is even end-game "Iconic" gear that is dependent up your mentor, you get this by collecting tokens via end-game instances.

    Is there experience/Levels?

    Yes, level 30 cap

    Tradeskills?

    No.

    Open World PVP?

On PvP servers, yes.  It's completely open world PvP.  At the moment there are no rewards for it though.  There are also battlegrounds.

End game content? (I.e. challenging group dungeons, raids, an alternate advancement system fora fter you are max level)

There are Raids(8 man), Alerts (4 man) and Duos (2 man).  The instances are not easy, in fact they are damn hard at cap...  and there are also "Hard" modes. The game is designed around the concept of getting to the end game fast and then them focusing future development there.   It has a solid amount of end-game content for a newly released game, but the leveling curve is ridiculously fast.

I am not looking for a WOW clone, Ive never played WOW, but I played the games WOW ripped off.  But with that said, I have played a lot of MMOs, and I know what I am looking for.

Short of being a sandbox, this game is about as far from WoW as a themepark gets. The quests are pretty generic, but the presentation is better than any MMO currently on the market.

This game doesn't have anywhere near the content that EQ2 does.  But thats to be expected.  It should give you atleast a couple months of fun... it depends on Sony whether or not that extends farther.
