nothing majorly new, the only thing that could be remotely considered new is non-static PQ's & 3 specs at once...well its not really 3 specs its "heres 3 specs and a bunch of talent points, now be careful where you put these talent points because you're not gonna be able to get everything you want from these 3 trees"
imagine if you had to put talent points into all 3 trees in wow to be viable, Yea. when you look at it from a min / max perspective it doesnt bring that much more ... customization to the mix
You haven't even touched the game and you post a "completely non biased review"?
What 3 specs? There are 9 talent trees that you can match in any manner you want.
Why to be careful? You can respec an unlimited amount of times and experiment to your heart's desire.
The system is versatile but a nightmare to balance for PvP I suppose.

Played until 13 and i got bored (lol insane leveling rate in the huge rifts). theres 9 per archetype and 4 archetypes in total (how did you not know that?...oh right), you can only be 3 specs at once, you dont have enough talent points to get everything in the 3 trees, the "be careful" was to emphasize the limited amount of talent points you actually have, just because you can experiment doesnt mean theres unlimited customization, theres going to be cookie cutter specs, and thats whats gonna be good and thats whats gonna be wanted, the PVP system is gonna be completely on its head in terms of balance and laughable when the devs attempt to balance it, the shit that ive read from the talent trees that i specced into (inq / the druid and necromancer (Hots Dots and a Pet that does more damage based on the dots you have up, Could you want more?)) there was blantetly overpowered CC abilities (8 second silence, 10 second fear, spammable 70% 30 yrd slow, 60% shield wall, 80% dispersion and thats just on ONE tree) that if melee (one charge on the warriors) dont get massive amounts of mobility (and HP, lol 5 dots at 10) its gonna be another "casters destroy everything" game
It aint gonna be popular, it'll have its hardcore fanbase as every game does (see AOC / War, game is sinking yet people still play) but it aint gonna thrive like any of the big names, expect F2P with cash shop within the next year or so.
Rift is a polished game for the stages of development they're in. For someone to come right out and say it doesn't have potential because it isn't offering anything new out of the gate should tell you everything you need to know about that person.
You'll find plenty of aspects in all MMOS that may be like a game before it. At the very least, they're offering a working product as described. Thats more than you can say for a ton of the MMOs that are coming out now a days.
They have my money..
Ironically enough, this is a horrible place to ask these sort of questions.

What exactly about Rift makes it 'NICHE'? Is it the fact everyones calling it a WoW clone? Oh that would make it the opposite.
Mortal Online is a niche game. Games like Rift which have a ton of elements from mainstream games aren't 'NICHE'. The biggest issue I have with Rift is the fact it could of been more 'NICHE'.

Like WOW where you barely get enough points to complete one tree . . . with 5 points left over? Talk about cookie-cutter builds. Your mage or rogue or warrior (insert which ever class you want here) can be just like 1/3 of the entire mage population of the entire game.
66 talent points to spend across three talent tress seems like a lot of customization to me. You can reach the top skill in two trees and have points left over if you want. Seriously doubt that there will be lots of cookie-cutter builds.
Originally posted by WAlex234 so ive recently been looking at this game and am wondering to myself does it have potential compared to all other releases so far and i would like to get some input on the game if anyone has any pleases feal free to post your oppinions.
one of my main questions is how does its PvP look????
Spend $5, pre-order online. Get beta key from Trion.
Log in to next beta event. Look at PvP. Make up mind.
Like it? Keep pre-order. Don't like it? Cancel pre-order.
Easy peasy.
Or.. read some fat guy's inaccurate review of PvP in the game even though he's never actually tried it yet.
Potential to do what? It's already a highly polished experience. Considering TOR will crash and burn due to no auto attack in it's combat engine and GW2 will have damn near every lick of pve content in a personal instance I think it's pretty safe to say rift will be the best game released this year.
That is funny. If true then were in for one shitty year, considering Rift is a sub par MMO at best.
First off Rockgod, while you're right about RIFT being VERY highly polished, you're wrong about GW2. Every single article out there proves that GW2's PVE will not follow GW's footsteps as an instance based game. There will be plenty of instances, your personal storyline for example, dungeons, etc. However, you will level in a persistent world with dynamic events.
@ Leucent: Yes, RIFT is such a subpar MMO with oh, over $150 million backing it, developers who so far, actually LISTEN to their feedback and make changes based on it (I've been through every RIFT event to witness it). Lollies... WoW wasn't this polished at launch, even. RIFT is not revolutionary, it's a mix of the best of the biggest titles on the market.
And soul trees? It amazes me how little people utilize them in a way that shows their true importance. You get up to 4 roles with 3 souls in each ex. if you have 66 points, each Role has 66 points to spend. You can choose ANY 3 souls you've collected for each role. You can respec those souls and choose different ones if you don't like it. For example, Mage:
First Role: DPS, PvP, High burst
Second Role: Pure Healer w/ good AOE, CC
Third Role: DoT / Life Leech build
Let's say you're in a dungeon, running through new content. Your party hits against a boss that does more DPS than your healer can manage and you need an extra offtank because it spawns Elite mobs. Your ROGUE can switch to a build that can tank, your MAGE can switch to a secondary healer and voila. You win.
Even I didn't start realizing it's full potential until I hit 27 in the last beta. There is SO much more versatility and customization amongst builds than most people understand. I would be willing to bet that over 75% of the current players rarely utilize role switching (which is as easy as placing a hotkey on your action bar, OOC).
Granted, because it is so much like other games and the fact that the majority of people enjoy their levels, items and experience just handed to them, there's definitely a chance it won't do as well as WoW. It's not a genre-breaking game like GW2 is expected to be. But it is absolutely the best alternative to everything else out there right now.
There's a reason it's new tag is, "We're not in Azeroth anymore."

Know what's funnier than this?
I ran into people who said their class was 'gimped' and did weak dps and Rift wasn't impressive. Then you ask them about training skills and they go "Training skills?" They had been grinding mobs and doing rifts/invasions and hadn't ever gone to town to train one time.
They thought all you do is get skills and that's it.. like, some other games they have played in the past (hehe). They didn't understand about Ranks but thought Rift wasn't much.
So they play a toon for 12 levels then stop the beta and post negatively because their "Riftblade" stinks, dies too early and does poo-poo dps, lawl. Seriously, I met several people who did this, I guess from bad earlier MMO training.

You may not be the only one, but you are definately way in the minority.
On what these forums? These forums are a huge minority who have played the game. I wish the game well, I really do , but I can forsee a " OMG this game rocks' , followed 2 weeks later "Am I the only one bored already", followed by 1 week later "who s going to sub to this" poll, follwed by "Rift, should it go F2P?", you can figure out the rest. It just doesn t have the lasting appeal to keep people around for many months. Before anyone says I m wrong, just go back and look at posts from WAR, Aion and AOC before release.
Its warhammer with Really Really Really annoying PQ's, Oh and impossible to balance classes.
PQ mobs will come running down the road every 30~ min or so and kill a couple of quest NPC's until they die (they're REALLY fucking strong, atleast in the early area, NFI how they expect people to do the PQ's once the "mob" gets out of the area, the first Pq's you run into are lvl 9 or so with 3,000HP a pop, now that might not sound like much, BUT YOUR ONLY DOING ABOUT 90 DAMAGE A HIT and they are hitting you for atleast 100 and you've only got about 500hp)
It doesnt have the least bit of potential at all, its way to "safe" it doesnt actually do anything new and everything is either watered down or ripped straight from wow (THEY EVEN HAVE A RETURN TO GRAVEYARD BUTTON IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT WOW HAS THEIRS)
If you're looking for a MMO that will break boundries and have atleast a decent amount of potential (without stupidly high requirements, another downside of RIFT) Its TERA
TERA has nothing better to offer. I love how people are bashing Rift for being nothing special, but they are quick to throw up a game that most people have no experience with yet (TERA, SW:ToR, GW2).
Rift is absolutely nothing new, but it is very polished and refined...something the MMO market currently lacks. I like it because it gives me another option besides WoW. I am tired of playing the same game and this is an alternative.
Who cares what budjet they have. I have played all the betas as well, nothing has changed to make the game less boring. You do 1 rift invasion, you ve seen it all. Sorry but thats how I feel. Trust me I m not the only one.
All of the AAA games have budgets over $100 million, it's close to impossible for this game to be subpar. Just because it's nothing genre-changing doesn't make it a subpar game. Very, very few games release with this much polish. Not even WoW did.
I'm not saying the rift invasions are the most exciting things ever, but it brings a new element to the game. You have to constantly be on the lookout for them and can't just mindlessly quest-grind through your levels without encountering them. Then you have to team up to take them down and earn items and experience from doing so.
Also, if you've been in all of the betas, you know just as well as I do that Trion has been adjusting and trying to balance things based on our feedback in every single beta. We told them that the rifts felt like an after thought, beta 2 they brought them in hardcore. We told them it was fun in beta 2 but it was a bit much, and we wanted more skill points to make the 2/3rd souls more viable, they added more skill points and toned down the rifts/invasions for 3. We said we wanted more PvP options, more dungeons, better mounts and more levels (initial raise was only to 25 instead of 27), and guess what they gave us.
They are constantly improving the game. By launch it will be better than it was in 2010. The entire reason this game has potential is because of Trion's willingness to listen to us, their customers. That in itself is something none of us are used to.
The Rift player-base doesn’t’ give me the impression they want it to be the next WoW; the next mmorpg Facebook. A shell of a game with people waiting for their queue to pop for the next Raid. Check back in 6-years, though.
As it is now, the content and breadth and depth of Rift game-play probably transcends the aforementioned; it probably contains some of the best content, an amalgamation of UO, EQ, Lineage, Asherons Call, WoW, LotRO, and WAR to attract a large player-base that is looking for a more solid and well-rounded classic fantasy mmorpg that hasn’t been delivered in the past 5-years.
Though in 2011, with GW2 and SWTOR, Rift will see some healthy competition. But by the time either of those 2 games comes out, I’m sure I’d have gotten some great entertainment value from Rift.
You saying people will be stone bored in two weeks, and on the other side 90% of the people who played in a BETA event begging to get in to the next - most of them already pre-ordering just to gurantee they do get into the BETAs. So which one is right? Hmmm? You in your infinite wisdom of the 'majority'? Or the real majority of people who are chewing at the bit waiting right now for a week from Tuesday to get here??
This /
I have beta tested Lotro, Tabula Rasa, Champions Online, STO, Vanguard, Warhammer, Aion, and many others. With that being said, Rift is my very first pre-order that I have ever made.
I haven't touched another MMO since I started beta testing Rift...I have no interest in anything else right now. This is the first time since 2005 that I don't have an active MMO that I am subscribed to.
I wish the game well, I really do , but I can forsee a " OMG this game rocks' , followed 2 weeks later "Am I the only one bored already", followed by 1 week later "who s going to sub to this" poll, follwed by "Rift, should it go F2P?", you can figure out the rest.
My guess, is that the time of Dynamic content has finally arrived (people can quibble all they want over whether it's scripted loops, etc). Both Trion and GW2 will be at the fore-front of this evolution in gaming. Even if they do not become huge successes, they will spur the industry forward into the next iterations. I am betting that every game company is watching closely and will be scrambling to add it to their own future games in some way or form.
Even if Rift bores the hell out of some people, we cannot refute the power of their server structure they developed with the help of HP. The way they can deliver new content on the fly while promoting people to finally socialize and group once again in a dry spell of soloing, is alone an achievement in itself.
I don't think so. The game is generic without the polish and unoptimized. As some above posters have mentioned, it's just like Warhammer and other games except worse.
I would have to disagree 1000%
The only connection to WAR would be the slight artistic similarities, the Rifts and the chaos that permeates some areas due to them being under attack.
The story line is very intresting, the graphics are far superior than WAR, and the quests, albeit your standard types, tie into the story very well.
This worries me; any mention of quests tied to "storyline" worries me. Does the game feel as free as vanilla WOW, where you could go to different quest hubs in a zone in any order, or does it feel railroaded like Cataclysm?
Asking a question you already know the answer to? We all know rifts level progression is extremely linear. How else are they going to keep everyone together to take advantage of the rift/invasion system?
Rift and ANY of the upcoming mmo's in 2011 have potential if they offer a varied and interesting end game. Study the problem Blizz has with their end game and do NOT create the same feeling of boredom.

I've played Rift this weekend and I thought is is well done, with great graphics and a good gameplay.
It really has potential. It will never be a WoW killer (and I doubt any game will ever be) and it has nothing new exept the class combination that really tweaks your character. Like other people had said, it is a WoW and Warhammer copy-paste.

I think it will do moderately well, but not much better than anything that isn't wow.
Please refrain from posting second hand "reviews" as gospel. When you haven't touched the game it shows.
The last paragraph is so true, and thats how I see rift, antoher nich game with a rabid fan base. I just dont see it with more than 100k sub base after 6 months.
What big names? WoW and Aion?
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
Log in to next beta event. Look at PvP. Make up mind.
Like it? Keep pre-order. Don't like it? Cancel pre-order.
Easy peasy.
Or.. read some fat guy's inaccurate review of PvP in the game even though he's never actually tried it yet.

Who cares what budjet they have. I have played all the betas as well, nothing has changed to make the game less boring. You do 1 rift invasion, you ve seen it all. Sorry but thats how I feel. Trust me I m not the only one.
Funny stuff.
"TO MICHAEL!"
It might.
That's what I'm thinking too.
This /
I have beta tested Lotro, Tabula Rasa, Champions Online, STO, Vanguard, Warhammer, Aion, and many others. With that being said, Rift is my very first pre-order that I have ever made.
I haven't touched another MMO since I started beta testing Rift...I have no interest in anything else right now. This is the first time since 2005 that I don't have an active MMO that I am subscribed to.
Dang. Guess I'll go cancel my pre-order now.
It is foretold.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Rift and ANY of the upcoming mmo's in 2011 have potential if they offer a varied and interesting end game. Study the problem Blizz has with their end game and do NOT create the same feeling of boredom.
